I think that maybe you could stun or set the user's speed to zero during the part you want the ready meter to freeze for the desired effect? I don't know how well that would work.

You can go to "Layers & Tilesets" in the map editor to choose a tileset that'll be your overhead tiles, hold Shift to move a layer above the heroes & NPCs, then when map editing you can press Page Up and Page Down to switch layers.

I highly recommend using Fenrir Lunaris' Vikings of Midgard graphics, which he provides freely for newer users to use. His graphics are excellent, and have proven to serve different purposes well.

It's easy enough to find pixel tutorials on the internet. Just try to keep the graphics simple and you'll do fine.
