Crazy or Genius.... sadly I'm not quite either of those :(
99% of genius is effort.

Yeah, I think that's a good summary. I mean, it's obviously okay to hide things from the player that they can't be expected to know. Or giving the player the temptation to be reckless. It's okay to put up a sign that says "WET PAINT" and let the player touch to find out if it really is..

Dungeonmen's class selection isn't the problem, that's actually really nicely considered. The issue with choosing equipment is that the data for equipment wasn't placed very well (Later versions fixed this, I believe) but also that you have to wander around to find where to buy the equipment in the ...

Where do temporary choices come into play with this? I'm thinking of stuff like switching jobs in FF3 or fusing demons in any of the Shin Megami Tensei games; neither of them are permanent choices in any sense of the word, but they both have a sort of 'friction' involved in them. The former has the...

Okay, so you're totally right: the exact same slime he's done in every movie. I'm glad you mentioned Alfred though! Jeremy Irons is the best casting choice for Alfred yet. I thought Michael Caine was just a little bit too chummy.

I suppose a factor to keep in mind is the length of the game. If the game is only an hour or two long (and if things carry-over New Game + style) then making a bad choice isn't the end of the world. But if you're stuck with that mistake for 80+ hours you're supposed to be emotionally invested in... ...

Loved the review, haven't seen the movie. I've always thought Superman was kind of boring, because he's invincible, he's super fast, etc. The people in the movies and comics always seemed to agree with their "It's a bird! It's a plane!" schtick being the most boring possible reaction you c...

Crazy Notions and Foolish Ideas

This thread is built upon two fundamental principles. One: If I talk long enough about RPGs, I'll eventually stumble onto an idea for something to enter into HOTOHR... or I'll convince myself I don't like RPGs again. That's okay too. Two: I'm too lazy to start a blog and slime blogs anyway. To that ...

You might also look into one of those things where the gut an NES and put a teeny computer inside of it that can play almost anything. Combine it with one of them NES Cartridges that's actually a USB storage device and you could have the joy of plugging your own game's cartridge into an NES and play...

Super cool! I remember you mentioning something about a big name licensedproject and always wondered what'd happened. I assume this is it?

You're right; I'm prone to over-thinking things because I try to have a perfect design before starting, but things like this can be built gradually -- we can always add more options later. I guess that's a result of having to live with so many design mistakes that we've made over the years, it's re...

I liked Feenicks' reviews, they got straight to the point and cut all the megaslime. I liked Charbile's too, because he always does something clever with the formatting. I had meant to vote for Feenicks, but I screwed up and thought it was one of those "Click all that apply" polls. Whoops ...

Standing in a corner, facing 4 very angry Kythons, Harvey remembers the dumbest thing he ever heard in his life: "Harvey, my boy.. you can't kill all your problems." The invisible killer shudders, stricken by the sissiness of the words. Unfortunately, with only the chance to kill 2 of the...

tiny game reviews: random review picker: In the event that you don't have the ability to choose an OHR game made in 2014 for yourself, you can use this thing. It even keeps track of which ones you've already played, which is nice. Those are my two biggest problems in this contest: Choosing a game t...

Gaah, I know, I'm sorry. It's easy to forget that this monumental piece of work was accomplished in only one month. The art and scripting are so nice it feels like years of effort. With that in mind, it's all a lot more impressive. I did know Norn was one of the witch bosses, and I like that kind of...
