I'm thinking globals would be the easiest way to go about it. And you'd just have a plotscript attached to textboxes to increment or decrement the value of said global. Then you'd just use a script that checks that global before doing whatever it is you want to do. And yeah, tags would be an extreme...

No, nothing in the command line. Was all GUI as I recall.

I had a bit of trouble with that too on my laptop at first. But I changed a few settings with the power manager (can't remember exactly what as it was around three years ago) but after that, it worked fine. No overheating, and decent battery life. I'd suggest doing a bit of fiddling with the settings.

Never really stopped working on it, I just kinda shut up about it
