You also get a bite attack which deals 1d4 damage. You can use this attack during a full attack action, basically for free. Go with a doppelganger or a centaur. You don't need class levels when you have stats like that.

You don't need to use the Savage Monsters book. If you want to play a common monster race, you can generally find its stats on the d20srd. But it's not a requirement, as far as I can tell.
