How does the MP change not affect balance? Before: You can cast LIFE three times before you need to leave the dungeon. Oh, and it's on the same level as CUR3 and HEL2, so you have to choose between using your best cure spells and saving the spell levels to revive an ally later. After: As long as you...

The strongest party in the game is 3 Red Mages and a Fighter. 4 Red Mages is *not* a completely average party. The problem with the remakes (well, the BIGGEST problem) is that they do away with level MP in favor of traditional MP. This means that there is no reason to cast Fire once you learn FIR2 -...

You should do a no-magic run, meaning you can only use magic from equipment.

Incidentally, if you do a no-magic run and avoid using Phoenix Downs, the re-releases of FF1 begin to approximate the original in difficulty. There's still no inventory restriction, though.

LAST-MINUTE NOMINATIONS: Now's the time for them. We only have two games on the ballot.

Happy Halloween! Vampire's Curse edges out Curse of Vampire for the win. You'll be able to admire it on the front page from now until the end of November.

This is an excellent idea.

I haven't touched it recently. I'm not even sure I updated it at all since my initial post, so I'm surprised that you got a new combination to work. Do you mean that "pig" doesn't show up in the list at all or that it doesn't do anything once you select it? If you have alchemy suggestions,...

There's a quote from an IF game designer about how mazes are usually more fun for the designer than they are for the player. This is a common pitfall; to see it in action, try Puzzle's game, which I think is called "Quest for Color." Mercifully, it doesn't have random encounters. So my bes...

Not to hijack the thread, but I feel like I should mention Crystal Chasers as an example of a game that also did the puzzle/dungeon integration. The puzzles were largely required, although there were also optional ones that yielded treasures. You might check it out if you're trying to do something s...

Anyway, welcome to the community.
Might make a difference if the other guy were more active. It's a public gallery after all.

@masail: Welcome welcome!

For me, it really depends on the size of the scripts. Do You Want to be a Hero? is one file, whereas Phantom Tactics is something like five.

Liev viciously claws at the wounded bug. Vire assesses his potential targets: he feels safe enough now, but the elf and dwarf are under attack. Vire quickly decides that he doesn't really care.

He reloads his crossbow and fires at Liev's target, or the one to the south if Liev finishes that one off.

Also, Vire didn't kill anything with his wand. It was crossbows.
