Sounds good, Willy! What is it that you need to rest from by returning to base? Is there combat of some sort (yo-yo based?), or do you just gradually lose stamina during exploration?

Marionline: here is my battle balancing tool (in Excel format): http://www.crithit.org/hlock/OHRRPGCE_Enemy_Statter.xlsx To use it, you need to arbitrarily define your hero stats first, and set them relative to one another. You need to do it arbitrarily because one needs stable hero stats against wh...

Enemy Statting and Battle Balancing Tool

Hi all. A few people have asked me for advice on battle balancing and enemy statting, so I made this spreadsheet tool that will help with the process. The numbers you get from using this tool will be in the general ballpark of what you want, and then you should be able to fine-tune the experience fu...

Marionline: I actually get asked about how to balance battles a lot, so I think I'll do a whole write-up on it, make it its own post, and then I'll also copy it here or something. Look for that in about an hour or so, it'll be pretty detailed!

I'd like to participate as well, hopefully. I want to make something like... a one-screen platformer in the vein of Bubble Bobble but more by way of Castlequest.

Hey, everyone. Thanks for getting us off to a good start. This is just a heads-up to let you know that I think we ought to move discussion over to the MEGA-THREAD (in this same forum). Now that the contest is underway, I think it's good to have all the questions/answers/update logs/response in the s...

Marionline: I'm really glad you decided to participate. That's exactly the kind of response I was hoping this contest would get. If you want help with scripting, just ask. We've got a lot of people who are good at it, and we're usually willing to take a look at scripts and help you out. You can also...

LOG UPDATE 0:2 Updates this time are from the opening of the game. As part of the game's prologue, the main protagonist, Galya, is visited in a dream by the nefarious DUKE SATAN, who subjects her to a variety of ethical conundrums and miserable choices. http://www.crithit.org/hlock/HC-ethics1.png S...

Hey, everyone. Thanks for getting us off to a good start. This is just a heads-up to let you know that the rules of the contest have been determined and the first post up above has been edited to reflect them. It also describes how the voting process will go. Most importantly is that, in light of th...

Moogle had an "OHR Tactics" demo working a long time ago. It was definitely functional, but it was made in the early days of plotscripting, so one could doubtless improve upon it considerably nowadays. Not sure if anyone else has made one.

As a matter of general principle, if you have a function that has to be carried out multiple times in a game, like the hero swapping you're referring to, you can make it its own separate script, with argument slots for things like which hero, and then anytime you need it, you can call it with just o...

Spellshard uses the NES palette. I exported it and attached it to this post! The BMP is tiny, but if you squint, you can see it over there on the right.

Yeah, no worries, Foxley! If you do end up drawing anything or run into any problems, feel free to post it in the mega-thread anyway. Ramping up interaction between us devs is of more long-term importance to me than whether or not anyone finishes a game this year.

Even though I would virtually always use the "resume" rather than "restart," I also agree that a toggle is the way to go. Never know when someone is going to find a clever use of an option in the OHR.
