Show off your graphics!

I like these tiles a lot, looks really grungy and depraved. I can even identify each of the game consoles!

For just messing around, these graphics look pretty good! The more you work on things, the more you an develop a style, and you'll work faster too.

It's also been mentioned here that you can go back at any point and edit the tiles you've already made. I recently went back and put some detail in my grass tiles, and I'm planning on redoing my water tiles.

Also, the more you work on it the better you get, so you may find yourself halfway through a project and realize that your first tiles and graphics look crummy compared to the newer ones! That's happening to me

Hey guys. I used to post here under a different name about three years ago and have pretty much spent my hiatus improving both as an artist and game designer. I recently rediscovered the OHR community and figured, "hey, maybe I should make a game just for fun", so now I've got myself a little project going on all of a sudden.

Here's a bunch of portraits for the main cast. The characters are all based on me and my circle of real-life friends:

That all looks great. I think you should really invest in a scanner tough. No one doing that quality of work should be without a high quality scanner.

Also, are those portraits OHR format?

Thank you! I will be sure to have a scanner present next time I decide to upload more sketches.

And yes; the portraits were initially drawn with GraphicsGale, then colored after importing them into the engine. I tried to go for a somewhat strategic use of colors with the modified master palette I use.

My old username was PastaDevil. Published one game (which was absolutely terrible in hindsight) when I was 14-15. I posted some sprites here during the time I tried to touch up the graphics, and eventually pulled the plug on the project and disappeared because I couldn't even take the slightest bit of criticism well back then.

well, i'd love to hear more about your game and such shaggypos. but maybe we shoild jump that to a different thread.

If I compared those graphics to those in other games, I would be comparing them to the best commercial ones...


AnalogousGumdropDecoder: I think a game with very minimalist graphics can still look pretty nice, and you've put in some details to keep things from being boring. One option is to consider a tiny bit of shading though, (probably around the edges of things, giving them a bubbly look) to give things more depth. Somehow that walkabout looks much flatter than the rest of the graphics, though actually nothing except the ground is shaded. It looks like it's intentionally meant to pop out from the screen. Is it intentional? It reminds me of old cartoons where it's instantly obvious what's static background and what isn't. That's not necessarily bad; it's just a style.

@AnalogousGumdropDecoder: Those are some of the neatest graphics I've seen in awhile! Very simple but effective. My suggestions are that you should:
1) Try to reduce the amount of black outline in the character. This will make it blend more with the background.
2) Given that the background is essentially greyscale I'd make the character a paler shade of green. This way the character won't pop out so much, but the presence of colour will make the character stand out to the player.
3) In the map editor make the hero's elevation offset +4 or something, that way he'll look like he's standing in the middle of the tile rather than at the tiles edge.

I'll take all that advice into account. I got derailed for a few days, but I have made a little forward progress. I haven't actually put time into real titlescreens/backdrops yet, just made some crummy things to make sure I could make it work. I do have some good music going though. Here are some updates on what I've got so far, not taking into account any advice about the outlines, offsets, etc.

Battle can happen? I'm nowhere near done with the monster sprite or the hero sprite. I'm pretty fond of the walkabout, but my battle sprite looks kinda wonky (especially in the bottom half)
