No, but sometimes I like to pretend I'm Bob Ross Hurr

In all seriousness though, I did have SOME formal training, but when my money ran out, so did my formal education. Just about everything in the last few years I've done to advance my skills has come as a matter of necessity and repeated practice. Turns out that being able to sell your work is a great motivator to self-improvement! Smile

Wow Val, those are amazing.

So Fenrir, how come you shrunk down that backdrop-instruction-sheet to 50% of the original size? It's easier to see the brush strokes/detailing in the original. I just want to note that drawing stuff at double resolution and shrinking it to 320x200 was a significant part of the technique. And as awesome as the final backdrop looks though, the original 640x400 true color was better :(

the initial layout for the background (or any other piece of work) is considered a skeleton. he's not being literal.

It was basically...

Step One: Make a skeleton of the background you want.
Step Two: Make it fantastic.
Step Three: Color it.

Something must've been lost in translation.

I'm no Fenrir, but I just started the 8-bit world in Triangle. The heroes get sent into a computer to eliminate a nasty virus.

The basic train of thought is to first do your basic shapes, then color them, then work on shading, and finally do some touch ups wherever they're needed. I'll try to include or more step by step process with my next one ;3

I typically draw basic shapes, then general details, then touch it up, then either add minor details or colour, and then add the other I didn't beforehand.
Obviously, I'm not as sparkly.

@RedMaverickZero
I dig the Megaman Battle Network-esque background.

Just going to say that you should NEVER be afraid to think you can never get better. This was 13 years ago....

You're an old man, Fenrir!

...

Wait, I was also messing around with the OHR 13 years ago... Crikey, I'm also an old man!

Hehe, but in all seriousness, Fenrir's right, never be afraid to think you can't get any better. Hmm, now I'm tempted to dig through my old files to show off just how terrible I was back in the day... Heh, how's about it people? Post samples of your art and how you think you've improved over the years V

@lunar fenrir
That's still not all that bad.
I would dig out some art of mine from about 3 or 4 years ago when I started using this thing, but not only could I not find it (probably one of the things lost in the great crash of o'10), but I think it might render some people permanently blind.
Instead, here's something that might just render you temporarily blind:

Though, I, myself, have improved a decent amount over the course of time, my skills didn't really pick up until about the time I joined here, as I started taking this stuff more seriously for a few reasons.
That's not to say I'm a pro now, or anything, but I have most certainly improved my skills either learning techniques from others or just learning it myself.

I still just want keyboard access to editing backdrops....

I have improved over time, no doubt. Take a look at Battlequest...that was a joke game I created to see how battling worked on the OHR. Urgh, that was terrible. Those three characters still live on in my brain, however. Maybe someday they'll rise again in a proper game. Then came Grayscale, which was messy, but not too terrible. Forsaken was when I started to get myself together, and Illusions is what I'm currently capable of. I'm working on an apocalypse game, and trust me, I'm really trying, as you can see from my earlier hero/alien sprites.

I even *shudders* composed my own music for this game using Dubstep Studio.

Now you guys made me want to dig up my old work. Too bad I've gone through multiple computers since I first came upon the OHR, so most of my old scribblings are lost to history. I managed to find some games that I either abandoned or never intended to go anywhere with anyway.

First is Revelations, that one incomplete game I uploaded inbetween shitposting sessions on Castle Paradox. (End of my freshman year at high school.)

Here is what appears to be a Mario game from around January 2007. (Junior year, high school.)

Yet another Mario-themed one, this time from about October 2010. (Community college.) Hey, I'm getting better!

Here's something circa November 2010.

Here's something from around February 2011. (Painting in the first pic by John Wayne Gacy. Uh, yeah.)

Then here's that T-rex I did in August 2011.

And finally the one I did in December 2012.

See? Practice works. I'd probably have improved even faster if I had just practiced more these past six-and-a-half years.

Now the rest of you, show us how much your OHR graphics have improved.

Figure I might as well join the bandwagon of showing how to draw something

First you draw a basic shape

Then add some detail

And with some color, presto! It's kirby!

Or...something like that
