"He will cut off our heads!" whispers the prisoner.

"Who is 'He'?" asks Oxnar.

"The Umbarlee Priest!" hisses the prisoner.

Borgen is now standing on the wagon examining the King. The Cleric of Umbarlee is standing next to him.

The agitated guard is talking to the other guards, and gesturing towards the mountain.

The coach-drivers are working hard to make sure their wagons and coaches are fixed and ready to roll as soon as possible. Most of the passengers who aren't helping out are back inside their wagons.

"Not the..?" He stops before he can say duke. Turns out Hyne was mistaken this time, "So you mean the priest.. now that you mention it the idea is unsettling."

"What if we relayed everything you told us to the duke? Perhaps we could convince him that the priest's methods are unnecessary."

The prisoner spits "Duke? Pah, he is worth nothing! How fast you think you can convince him? My head will be off my neck before that wheel rolls again."

A group of about a dozen people is currently lifting a corner of the most badly damaged wagon while a couple of drivers pry broken spokes our of a wheel. A young woman with a small hand-axe is nearby shearing the sapling-branches off of some hastily scavenged replacements.

Six of the guards, led by the agitated one, have now left their horses behind and are starting towards the mountainside where Hyne found the King's body.

Oxnar looks around to verify that nobody is watching. "I could do it, you know" he whispers to Hyne. with a mischievous grin. He is fingering a small potion vial. Hyne doesn't know what it is, but it looks rather more expensive than the one Hyne just expended.

Hyne gives Oxnar a look, "I thought you were a Paladin..?"

He grasps the half-Dwarf's hand and pulls the vial for a closer look, "This is morally reprehensible! What's our window to get this plan under way?"

Oxnar grins broadly. He bends down and offers the potion to the prisoner. The man hesitates for only the tiniest instant before quaffing it. Nothing obvious happens.

Oxnar stands up, drops the vial back in his pocket, takes out his axe, and leans on it like a cane, with the head down in the dirt.

"Ubmarlee is the worst goddess in our planes-blessed pantheon." he explains to Hyne. "Pelor's approval shines on anyone who frustrates her miserable damp plans."

"Besides, The Duke will still get his answers from the other ones. Nothing I can do to save them. So nothing is really lost."

As Oxnar finishes the last sentence, you see the bristly yellow grass near the prisoner begin to move and bend down, even though there is not any substantial wind.

The prisoner is just hanging his head and breathing evenly.

"So you always keep Ubmarlee repellent in your Pelor utility belt?"

His humor dies when he notices it is given to the prisoner. He asks, "What did you do to him?"

My passive perception is actually higher than that roll result, but it probably doesn't matter atm

Ah, yes! I have updated my copy of your char sheet with the correct passive perception. You rolled well enough there anyway

"I always come prepared, both for the cloudy days, and the days when the sun shines bright." says Oxnar.

The sparse grass between the prisoner and Oxnar writhes. Hyne can here some faint nearby scrabbling and scraping noises, and a bead of blood appears out of nowhere on the edge of Oxnar's axe.

"You look like a hunter," Oxnar changes the subject nonchalantly. "How good at tracking are you?"

The prisoner remains motionless, staring dumbly at the ground, breathing evenly.

The grass near Oxnar's feet writhes a bit, and then most of it springs up.

The prisoner's voice sounds from thin air near Oxnar's head says "A thousand blessings on you and your merciful god!"

"Well," Oxnar continues, "If you wanted to ask that lad any more questions, you'll have to track him"

Hyne spots some disturbances in the grass moving rapidly away towards the treeline. They are very subtle, and he almost missed them.

Survival skill to mentally separate the trail from the natural movement of the grass in the wind: 1D20+3+2 => (18 + 3 + 2) = 23

For what seems like a casual stroll, Hyne strides alongside the edge of the given trail to follow it through.

As Hyne departs, Oxnar says "Good luck!", and then he wanders over to the wagon-repair crew and puts his axe to work helping the woman who is making new wheel spokes.

The now-invisible man seems to know a thing or two about moving silently, but thanks to Hyne's survival skills, Hyne is able to keep track of the faint impressions the man's feet make on grass and loose dirt.

He first heads to the treeline, roughly in the direction where the main force of invaders fled. The ground is all torn up here from the hooves of the guard's horses coming and going.

Once they are under the trees, following the man gets a little easier, since he can't avoid stepping on fallen leaves without moving far slower, and he doesn't seem to want to move slowly. He has not said anything to Hyne yet.

They are passing pretty close to the thorny bracken where he stashed the box.

Hyne continues to stay on the track to avoid losing it, deciding to come back for the box later, if it is still there that is..

The invisible man is taking care not to leave footprints, as much as that is possible when moving with modest haste. After they are a good distance away from the clearing, tree branches begin to wobble as he passes, as if he is intentionally brushing them with his hands as he passes to make it easier for Hyne to follow.

After about 15 minutes of quick silent walking, the faint outline of the man appears. He slowly fades in over the next half minute, after which he stops and looks at Hyne.

"Thank you stranger. Thanks to you and your friend both. I can't repay you for saving my life, but I will answer your questions as best as I can."

He is not very tall. At some point while he was invisible, he had removed his hood revealing uneven clumsily-cropped short black hair.

Hyne shakes his head, "Please.." He acts as though he clutches his heart and carries sorrow in his voice, "I deserve no thanks, I killed a couple of your men, but only because I wanted to help protect the innocent civilians. Pardoning somebody that was only doing their job is the least I could do."

He takes a breath, "But I was from Lionstribe, and I have no allegiance to the kingdom here nor their clergy; they might turn on me at any moment once my mercenary work satisfies them. This war going on, it's not just about territory, it's about the Umberlee clerics as well, isn't it?"

"What is the war about?" the man sounds surprised at this line of inquiry, but he laughs "You ask me the hard questions!"

"Jenna has always been at war with Srappa, I think. I don't know. I have not studied history. Sometimes it is better, sometimes it is worse. Srappa is a bad neighbor. They harbor pirates and protect brigainds. Jenna's part of the war is about protecting our border."

"As for the Umbarlee priest, I think these Srappans have all their priests mixed up in their politics. Srappa has bad gods."
