"And more importantly" Kailyn says as he butts in, "A question that is on all our minds. What's the pay?"

"Yessss," hissed Rasvim, as he leaned over the table to grab a hefty helping of food. He hadn't eaten in at least a day, and he wasn't about to pass up the opportunity for free grub. "What pay could Rasvim exssssspect?"

Lady Kari smiles kindly at Cece, and completely ignores Kailyn

Kari interprets hidden meaning in Caldon's words about his father, and a look of grief and guilt cross her face. She asks no further questions about Caldon's mother.

Focusing instead on the matter at hand, she says "Experiment? Well... yes, I suppose by definition you could call this an experiment. We have never had a Guild of Arcane Firefighters before, and we don't know if it is a success until we have tried it. But I very much believe this is more than just an experiment."

Some part of Lady Kari's statement seems like a half-truth, but you can't put your finger on what

In response to Bobo's question she says "Ah, yes, the bucket. I was about to get to that."

But she is interrupted by Kailyn's spectacle of a failed spell. "The pamphlets are supposed to teach a Create Water spell, and supposedly they can be used by anyone, even someone with no innate magical talent. I've been to busy, and I haven't had time to read one all the way through myself."

Create Water Pamphlets wrote:

Anyone can learn this spell.

These pamphlets take (4 - Intelligence modifier) evenings of study to completely read. The reader must read for at least an hour with no distractions.

You can't binge-read them all in one evening. (Arcane eyestrain!)

Being clerics, both Kailyn and Arcadia can easily notice that this isn't quite the same Level 1 Create Water spell they are familiar with, it is some kind of variant.

Lady Kari picks up the magic bucket (which Normin can now see has a strong aura of Transmutation magic)

When Arcadia speaks, Kari seems to forget about the bucket in her hands. She says, a little defensively. "It is neither an adventure, nor, an errand, it is a job. An important job."

When Kailyn asks about the money, a chagrined expression crosses Lady Kari's face.

"I was going to save that bit for last, but since you ask... The pay is... 5 gold per day."

Before anyone can respond, she quickly raises her free hand and gestures placatingly, "and I want to clarify to make this absolutely clear. That is five gold per day for each of you, not 5 gold to split among you. I realize this is a lot of money, but that is the number the Mayor wrote in the guild charter documents-- I asked her twice to make sure it was not an error, and she insisted."

DM wrote:
Doing back-of-the napkin calculations, 5 gold per day is like getting a job that pays US$62.50 per-hour. It ain't basketball-player money, but it is pretty dang good

Rasvim is taken aback. 5 gold per day?! That's more than he's had in his life! Surely there must be a catch. The work must be exceedingly dangerous, or it's some sort of scam... He keeps his mouth shut and keeps listening.

And just moments before where Normin seemed skeptical of the powers of the buckets, on a dime, he is suddenly sure of it, "You've yet to tell us the power the pails hold. I wish to inquire how exactly they interact with the spellwater."

Five gold.. That is a large sum for a commoner, but a pittance for a serious spellcaster. It will pay his rent and give him food for a few days, so it will have to do for now.

5 gold per day? With money like that, she wouldn't have to dumpster dive or charm skeezy men like the kiefling that's present...

"So when do we begin, madam?" She says coyly, putting a finger to her chin.

Lady Kari hastily adds, "5 gold is so much money, that I cannot fathom how the High Mayor managed to get the Lord Treasurer to sign off on it. I did not ask him about it, not even once, because if it was a mistake on his part, I would rather his attention not be drawn to it."

She says the last bit with a wink. Nobody who knows the Lord Treasurer really likes him much.

Petrol chokes a little at the mention of the pay. 5 gold per day? At this rate, the cost of having a Firefighting Guild was going to be worth more than all the flammable parts of the city. "Good grief! I'm not going to argue with that sum, but.. it sounds like this job is gonna be about more than putting out fires in the slums."

And asides from that... there was the test. With that kind of pay, there's surely an incentive to weed out as many of the applicants as possible.

Caldon turns away. This isn't the job he was expecting. This ragtag bunch might be drooling over that sum, but it's certainly not going to pay for the next Morgensen estate.

It's good money, he reminds himself, and honest work. He couldn't really expect much more -- not without begging for other houses' scraps. It might still come to that, but right now, no one outside Morgensen knew the extent of their troubles, and it might stay that way with a little luck.

Arcadia lets out a long sigh before digging into breakfast. She wasn't greedy like most of the other adventures, taking only a small plate. Upon hearing the amount that this errand--job--paid, Arcadia swallowed hard. 5 gold a day only paid for food for her horse. But she had no other prospects, or choices for that matter. The pamphlet in her hand was stuffed into her satchel, making note to herself that she'd probably need it later with the way Lady Kari spoke about it.

Suddenly no longer hungry, successfully losing her appetite, Arcadia strolled towards the boxes and began collecting the contents.

"Alright," she spoke, hoping that tool Kailyn didn't interrupt her again "When do we begin the job?" She put a hand on her hip, shining her best noble woman smile.

How curious. A hefty sum for fire fighters, even in the Unburning? Something must have really set off the higher ups to be this desperate, assuming that pay isn't a clerical error on the treasurer's part.

And even so, unskilled labor? A bunch of ragtag misfits, desperate for money. Even seeing some of the more wealthier looking people applying is rather worrying. Do they really need it?

"Excuse me, may I be allowed to examine one of the pails?"

If allowed to, he will touch the bucket he determined had trans-mutative properties and will cast Identify as a ritual spell to determine its use.

Lady Kari seems happy that Arcadia has smiled, and returns the smile. "The work will begin soon... but first..."

She tips over the bucket in her hand, and although it seemed completely empty a moment before, a torrent of water gushes out of it onto the floor. It splashes all over Lady Kari's feet and soaks her dress half way up to the knees in seconds. The pool of ice-cold water rapidly spreads across the floor touching the feet of anyone who doesn't jump back or retreat.

It is such a sudden shocking amount of water there are gasps.

All of you recognize that this is a remarkable amount of water.

In Arcadia's fine house there are only a few water taps, and they emit a gentle slow stream of water. It takes Cassia a full minute to fill a cooking pot to the brim.

In Bobo's tenement apartment, there is only one tap for the whole building. Old women gather around it in the basement to tell stories, and small children come and go with battered tin cups to laboriously fill with rusty brackish water to carry back upstairs to their families.

Ebald has walked at night in the Outskirt Fields, and chatted with the irrigation maintenance crews who only open the channel covers at night to avoid evaporation, and seen the languid lazy flow of oily water that runs beneath.

"This is the most important equipment." says Lady Kari, righting the bucket, and finally stopping the flow of water.

She passes the bucket to Normin.
Normin's identify ritual wrote:
He doesn't know an exact name for the spell that enchants this bucket, but it is very powerful. It can produce a stream of water seemingly endlessly. If there are limits on how long it can operate continuously, Normin is unable to discern them. He can't tell how it is circumventing the Rain God Curse, which by all rights ought to be diminishing its power.

Normin nods solemnly, his large hat covering him tilting in tandem, then respectfully returns the bucket. He isn't what he used to be, and may have been able to discern the origins of the power once upon a time, but he fails himself in his bitter forgotten abilities this time.

He knows for certain that the item is likely far more valuable than they are being paid for. Some 'experiment', indeed.

"Looks like I'll be working with buckets again. And hey, the pay isn't half bad." Ebald says to himself as he holds a few breakfast items. He already had a breakfast, but he was still a bit hungry, and who can say no to free food? He intended to study a pamphlet later so he could get a better idea of the situation at hand.

When the bucket's abilities are demonstrated, Ebald is quite shocked by what happened. He'd known about spells to create water, but he'd never seen anything like this.

"Fascinating. I wish I had one of these at my old job, although maybe a bit less... torrential." he said. As someone who had been around more than a few magical items at the University, he was interested in this magical bucket, but he also a tad suspicious. All this just for putting out some fires? He just hoped everything would go well and he could get some cash, but deep down he was prepared for something unexpected.

(Can I do a check to visually inspect the bucket and see if it bares some resemblance to anything I might be familiar with at my old occupation or the University? I think it would be a perception check but idk)
