Caldon is perplexed by the dwelf, but whatever the problem is, it's solidly outside his job description, and the lives of those trapped in the fire are almost certainly more pressing. He leverages the handrails to bound over the dwelf, continuing on his way.

West Stairwell

Ignoring Big Hat Normin entirely, Sharn hurries up the stairs.

The second floor landing looks uninteresting.

The third floor landing looks the same. Flight of stairs going up to the forth floor is obstructed by a rope that winds back and forth, and a hand-painted sign saying "UNSAFE". She could easily vault over the ropes if she chooses.

The air smells of smoke on the third floor, and she can see that there is even more smoke up on the fourth floor.

The hacking cough is louder, closer, but still above.

Behind Normin on the first floor, a green-skinned man with a curly blonde beard bumbles through the door behind him. "Oh! My babies! I can't believe my neighbors did nothing!" He pushes past Normin, and begins to awkwardly and laboriously climb the stairs with his peg leg. "My babies! My babies!" He mutters in agitation.

Caldon attempts to vault right over the big dwelf

Caldon's knees brush past the dwelf's pointy ears, and the man yells "Watch it!" But keeps rushing down, apparently more concerned with whoever he is pursuing than with Caldon

On the third floor, Caldon sees a barrier .

The next flight of stairs that leads to the 4th floor is blocked off at the landing with a rope and an overturned chair. There is a hand-painted sign that says: "DANGEROUS"

Nobody seems to be visible on this floor, but he can hear distant voices, and the smoke is a bit worse up here. It looks even worse beyond the "DANGEROUS" sign.

On The Street

Ebald, Petrol, Arcadia, and Evangeline are still outside.

The slowly growing crowd is mostly looking up at the flaming roof, murmuring. A few seem to be watching the Firefighters and whispering.

Two young halflings sprint up toward the Firefighters from one of the other non-burning buildings. Each is holding a bucket of water. One bucket has potato peels floating in it.

"Hey! Where did the Elfy lady go?" One of them asks. They are looking at the Firefighter's helmets and cloaks as if they are familiar.

They hold out the buckets as if waiting for someone to take them.

An Executioner is walking up the road towards them. He seems to be talking to his hand. Petrol recognizes that this is the same Executioner he passed on the way here.

Cece

Cece finds herself staring into the eyes of a small old goblin. She is wearing a black robe adorned in tiny bones. On her head is an triangular head-dress with a cat-skull at the peak, and marionette puppets dangling from the lower corners, bumping their lifeless bodies against her shoulders. All along the brow of the headwear is a row of pictograms. It isn't clear if they are religious symbols to an evil god, or lewd stick figures.

Her beady black eyes focus on Cece's torch, and a mad grin spreads across her face.

"Oho! Fire brigade? FIRE BRIGADE!? Yes, YES! I will come with you, I WILL! Let me just my torches!"

She scuttles past Cece, and begins rummaging in a big chest.

Kailyn

Far from frightening the butterfly away, the noise seems to please it greatly. Three more butterflies appear, and join their compatriot on Kailyn's face, opening and closing their wings joyously. They all tickle

The way the demi-human man talks about babies almost makes it sound like they might not even be children, but the kind of my babies type of valuables he's heard far too much about even secluded while half-Deckard-Cained out in the tavern corner. With Sharn running off presumably to put out the fire herself, this leaves Normin left to try to address the man's concerns, "Fine, fine, show me the way, but I make no promises to carry anyone given my frigid size."

Petrol arrives at the burning house just in time to see Sharn dump a stream of water over the other firefighters. Before he could prepare a bucket though, the stream was gone and Sharn had rushed back into the burning building. With a sigh, Petrol would take one of the water buckets from halflings coming over. "The elfy woman? She must've gone inside. I'll take this up to her."

Looking at the building, the fire seemed to be limited to the upper floors. Petrol would try to make a run for the fourth floor, looking for any signs of a fire along the way. Hopefully, along the way he could find Sharn and get either her cooperation or her bucket.

Ebald tries to get some water in his bucket and manages to get it barely half full. With at least half a bucket of water, he leaves the halfling's bucket for one of his companions and continues into the building.

I rolled a 13. Lucky me!

Arcadia was immediately annoyed at Sharn for dumping water all over the place. As she glared at Sharn's figure running blindly into the burning building, she reminded herself of the task at hand. Looking down at her buckets, Arcadia saw that a few were about halfway filled. Arcadia then noticed a crowd forming and people shouting too loudly and quickly for her to make any sense of it. Arcadia placed the buckets down as gently as possible before turning towards the crowd. In her best listen to me voice, Arcadia spoke firmly to the crowd.

"We are the Fire Brigade! We're here to help put this fire out, if you all could please remain calm and allow us to do our jobs. Now, can anyone tell me about the residents? Is there anyone you know left inside? Where are they?"

Front Door

Petrol and Ebald, both bearing buckets, hurry into the building and towards the stairs.

The big red-bearded dwelf man barrels down the stairs right into them "Out of the way! He is getting away!"

The man bumps into both of them as he rushes past, but both keep their footing, and neither drops his bucket.

Ebald and Petrol reach the third floor in time to see Caldon clamber over the "DANGEROUS" barrier and up to the smokey fourth floor.

Caldon

perception check wrote:
traditionally, perception is one of the checks that the DM does and keeps secret, but I rolled one here, yep!

The fourth floor is in bad shape-- and looks as if it was in bad shape already long before the building was on fire.

The paint on the walls is peeling. The floorboards are warped and cracked. Things are dangling from the ceiling, obscured by the smoke.

Like the floors below, this floor has a hallway going east and a hallway going west. All of the doors appear to be open or ajar.

The stairs up to the fifth floor look bad. Many rungs are missing. Smoke is billowing down.

Caldon can hear the crackling of the fire on the floor above.

To the west he can hear distant coughs.

To the east he can hear harsh and urgent whispers, but he can't make out the words.

Outside

While Evangeline stands by, Arcadia addresses the crowd

A woman steps forward. "I don't know how many people live in our building, but I know nobody lives on the top two floors. We all live on the first three floors."

An old man adds "MY whole family is out, but I don't see my neighbor Billvald..."

"Here I am!" calls Billvald.

"My neighbor's oldest son is usually home alone at this time of day, I don't see him!" calls another, with worry in their voice.

Another answers; "I saw him! He was leaving with friends an hour before the fire started!"

The residents of the building begin talking among one another and self-organizing, trying to figure out who is present and who is missing. They are making a lot of noise, but given another minute or two, they may be able to come up with a useful answer to Arcadia's question.

The two Halfling kids grab empty buckets from among the remaining spares, and run off to fill them.

Cece

Upon more closely examining the person still standing looking out the window, Cece realizes that he is definitely a mannequin. A very well-made and realistic mannequin, but not a person, just a dummy. He has chiseled high-elven features, and it looks like the long mane of hair on his head is real; a high quality wig.

With a squeal of delight, the old goblin woman plunges a freshly-lit torch into the back of the wig, and it ignites with a speed and fury that can only be explained by magic or high-proof alcohol.

"HeheheheHAHAHA! Lead the way, oh mistress of the FIRE brigade! My torches are at your command!". The old woman has six lit torches in her hands now, so many she can barely control them all-- indeed, her marionette head-dress is already getting singed as she dances back and forth and plunges the torches in and out of the various heaps of -- alarmingly flammable -- garbage piled up in her apartment.

Flash To Back Outside Again

The person who has been standing in the 3rd floor window all this time suddenly bursts into flames.

The woman who first answered Arcadia sighs and says "Oh, yes... I guess old Zargorina must still be inside."

"Dear gods!" exclaims another person with an exhausted tone, "I hope she doesn't burn to death!... that will only encourage her!"

Normin

The peg-legged man makes his way into the second floor hallway. He moves with a quick stomp-thump-stomp-thump accompanied by wincing. It seems as if it hurts him to move this fast. He turns north, and around the corner, and throws open a door to one of the apartments in the back half of the building.

From the part of the hallway that Normin can see, he can surmise that the hallway seems to be a big rectangular loop running all the way around the building.

DM wrote:
I will draw maps if anybody requests them

Normin follows the man into the apartment, and his fears are confirmed. These aren't person-babies.

The peg-legged man falls to his one good knee before a rack of small wooden barrels. The rack takes up most of the room. "Oh, my babies! my babies! I thought I had lost you!"

Big Hat Normin, with his proficiency in drinking, immediately recognizes the markings on these refined wine casks, these are high quality, high potency alcohol.

The Peg Leg fellow selects four casks with the precision of a man who knows exactly which of his babies he loves the most, and then he begins to try and carry all of them at the same time. It seems unlikely that he will be able to get down the stairs with more than one at a time without falling and breaking his neck (or worse! breaking a cask!)

There are about 20 casks remaining on the rack.

Sharn

On the fourth floor landing of the west stairwell, the smoke is thick (worse that what Caldon is seeing on the fourth floor landing of the central staircase)

Sharn can hear the roar of the fire above her head on the fifth floor. She can't see the flames when she looks up the stairwell. Maybe only the roof is burning right now?

Just beyond the door, in the hallway just out of sight, Sharn can hear that harsh hacking cough. "Damn all the planes, Elsinore!" wheezes the coughing voice, "You are heavy sister *HACK HACK* why do you have to be so heavy?"

Kailyn

The opening and closing of delicate gossamer wings

The gentle shifting dance of insectile legs, lifting, cleaning, coming down again.

The soft stirring of the afternoon breeze, so faint, but just enough to stimulate every nerve ending

How far away is the paint shop? How long has Piter been gone now?

Caldon makes a snap judgment call. Both groups of voices need investigation, but he will check out the west group before the east group. He moves as quickly as he can while still examining his footing to make sure the floorboards are in good shape.

"Aieeek! 'ow could you?!" Cece shouts, so surprised she doesn't even have time to file a religious complaint about it. Oh no, oh no, oh no, this is NOT what we trained for...

What to do, what to do... You have to be careful with crazy people.. they're crazy. Then again, why does a Fire Brigade fight fire?! Maybe it's the language that's crazy! Think Cece, think! Don't die in here! Be crazier than she is!

Cece shoots the puppet mistress a dirty look. "You selfeesh oaf! We 'ave enough fire een here! We want eet out there!" and then attempts to topple the flaming mannequin out the window for effect. "The fire, 'elp me geet eet outside!"

Looking at the markings on the casks, and smelling the scent in the apartment, Big Hat Normin can tell that this isn't the cheap stuff. By his guess, none of it is cheap enough to be the stuff he has been tasting for the past few years.

It smells noticeably stronger than ordinary wine. Maybe some kind of fruit liqueurs?
