CAMPAIGN: The Unburning (D&D5e)

He smiles under his hat, "A genuine love for passing knowledge, I see. Your class is fortunate to receive the treasure of your mind. Very well, send one of your own to the Bad Noodle Lane, where our headquarters are stationed. If I am not there yet, I expect one of the others to be still present- I've done a bit of teaching myself, hmmhm."

Once that is done, he will visit the aforementioned store. He doesn't expect to afford anything, but it could still be useful to plan future purchases.

Arcadia stares at Sharn for a long minute, her arms crossed and eyebrows perked. She sighs before nodding. "That's true …it would be a burden and a nuisance to only have one key." Arcadia then turns from Sharn, speaking to the room. "Would anyone else like a key made?"

Caldon takes the time to learn the water spell before heading back to the Morgensen estates to continue settling family affairs.

Arcadia and Sharn

Someone begins screaming outside. It isn't a loud noise, but it sounds like it is coming from a few blocks away... someone must be screaming loudly to be heard at that distance.

Normin

Dean Intensity Brown assures Normin that someone will be at the Headquarters to magically ward it within a few hours.

Normin finds the student store a bit of a disappointment. It has numerous overpriced copies of a selection of magic books. Many of them appear to be written by the professors. More than half the store is full of non-magical textbooks for the University's other subjects. "Survey of Common Literature" "Mundane Mathometry" "Dwarven Studies" etc...



Caldon

Caldon heads towards the Morgensen estate in Old Bakak, but no sooner does he leave the Poor Quarter, does he spot someone he recognizes -- or rather , they spot him.

"Caldon! Caldon Morgensen! Just the person I was hoping to run into!"

It is Etna Lane Corngood, the Low-Mayor of Granary Hill. The Corngoods are old-money, but not really a proper noble house. High in business sense, but not so high in class or style.

Low Mayor of a district isn't a very important position. It hardly carries any more authority than a Low Judge.

"I heard the most interesting rumor about you this morning, Caldon" she says with a smile.

If Caldon chooses to look back over his shoulder, he can see the ribbon of smoke rising over the Poor Quarter. Etna Lane Corngood does not notice it at all.

Cece

As she gets close to headquarters, Cece sees a ribbon of smoke rising from somewhere away from the main road. It looks like it is right near the border of the Unburning.

Kailyn

The balcony Kailyn is enjoying commands a view mostly of the University. If he looks all the way to the right, he might spot the distant ribbon of black smoke.

Ebald and Evangeline and Petrol

All three of you separately are in Old Bakak. You are too far away to see the smoke in the Poor Quarter, but if you decide to go back to headquarters, you will see it.

The spellbooks here seem overpriced even for the already expensive spells? His visit ends up short and he departs shortly to return to headquarters.

"Ahh, Mondieu! That 'ad better be a barbecue!" It's ridiculous though. There's no way there's a fire on the first day... no way she found a second bucket when she was totally going to be needing a second bucket. The gnomes couldn't have been that right.. maybe they aren't the only pilgrims in town. Maybe one of those goat-burning sects is back in town, those guys are always the worst.

Cece's dashing towards HQ anyway. Maybe they've heard something. They definitely have the water... not that they need it. She's clutching the potato skin bucket and the St. Buster pamphlet tighter though. Oh no.. oh no.. please just let it be goat burning.

Caldon would rather do nearly anything else. He glances around for an out and one presents itself. Magical.

"Yes, Low-Mayor, it's true that I've started doing some volunteer firefighting. Giving back to the city, you know. Say, is that smoke I see over there?"

As Caldon jogs off in the other direction, he calls back. "Sorry to run, Etna! Please give my regards to your husband. Come for tea sometime, won't you?"

Kailyn finishes off the torte, licking his fingers as he does so. He leans against the wall to his right, looking all the way to the left, enjoying the view of the city. He ponders what sort of things will happen tomorrow, and if there are any further tests. He makes a mental note to get in touch with his landlord to see about paying rent. He certainly doesn't have enough right now, but shouldn't be too difficult to figure something out sooner or later. Besides, what's the worst that could happen?

"Enough of this sulking. I should really head back home..."

Near Headquarters

The smoke is emerging from the rooftop of a 5-story apartment building one block north of the Headquarters. It must be just across the border of the Unburning.

The screams and yells are coming from that direction.

People are visible in the street at the foot of the building, both running out, and running back in, perhaps trying to help others out.

Cece cannot smell any goat

Caldon

"Firefighting!? How exciting!" Calls Etna Lane Corngood, still not noticing the smoke. As Caldon rushes away she takes out an appointment book, and is probably writing "Tea with the Morgensens" in it.

Kailyn

Kailyn notices that Piter has taken a break from the painting of the room, and is now doing a charcoal sketch of Kailyn on the balcony.

Evangeline

Evangeline returns to Marketday. She goes past the dress shop and up the stairs to her apartment.

Contessa Quinn is there, in front of the mirror, doing her hair. She has an assortment of dancer's outfits strewn around the common room, as if she has been trying them on but is unable to decide on one.

If Evangeline was to go to the window, she might see the smoke in the distance, or she might not.

"Evangeline! I have a gig dancing at a Guild of Prospectors party. Help me with this hair! I can't get the back right"

"Oh dear, it seems trouble didn't wish to wait a day," Big Hat Normin notes as he notices the commotion travelling home. He hastens his pace, shuffling a bit faster to return to headquarters to see who is around to inform.

There's no way the others haven't heard this ruckus. They're probably on the way there now.. stupid! Stupid stupid stupid not to take one of those stones! Cece grabs a random passerby. "You! Go over there an' 'ave the firemen come eef they 'aven't already!" She pats the passerby on the shoulder and rushes off towards the fire.

"Great!" Evangeline says to her as she walks over to her to fix the motley braid that Contessa had attempted.

"You won't believe the day I've had. That guild business is forming, and I tell you, it's full of some...interesting characters. There was poor people, rich people, beautiful people, homely people...there was one fellow there, apparently a baron, who hit on everyone...even me! If I can play my cards right I might be able to bring back a little extra, besides my daily pay..."

With Contessa's hair fixed, Evangeline looks longingly out the window.

"...But really, I still don't get it. Even with the Unburning, they need firefighters...it seems odd, to me at least. But it pays well, regardless."

Petrol would idle about in the Market after he's dismissed from the judge's office.
