"None whatsoever, but you have to agree that having more than one place to strike out from gives us greater coverage of the city. Besides, I live on the penthouse, giving me a lovely view of the city. Also provides me with a great vantage point from which to spot any fires."

On that note, can we get a map of the city and which parts are affected by the fire curse? No idea whatsoever if Kailyn's suggestion of having more than one base makes sense from a geographical point of view.

Lady Kari answers Sharn kindly; "Yes, I'll be paying you 5 gold every day-- even on days when there are no fires. There are magic Alarmstones in the guild headquarters that we can use to keep in touch."

"As for knowing when a fire has happened, yes, watching for smoke and hiring urchins are not bad ideas, but hopefully the Alarmstones will take care of that."

"There are 8 of them which you can position around the flammable parts of the city, and local residents will be able to use them to call for your help-- If a fire breaks out, someone only needs to run to the nearest Alarmstone, not all the way to Guild Headquarters."

She nods at Kailyns suggestions. "Temple hill is not in danger of fire, but you are most gracious to offer access to your resources."

"And yes, horses would help immensely. The headquarters building has a stable attached with room for 6 horses. If you want me to recommend a horse-seller, I know a few reputable ones."

Lady Kari then takes out some paper and a pen, and sketches a crude map of the city:

"I am not an artist," she apologizes, "This map is terrible, and not-to-scale, but it does show the general layout of the city."

She dips a quil in a pot of red ink, and draws a horizontal line across the city to indicate the boundary of the Unburning.

"As you can see, almost all your work will be in the Poor Quarter."

It is currently still late morning right now-- We will say not quite 11:00 am. You don't have to check out headquarters today if you don't want too-- but there is certainly enough time.

Arcadia does her best to not roll her eyes too far back into her head at Kailyn. The man is a nuisance. She hears someone else talking but can't understand a word. She's simply glad to be getting paid.

At the mention of the need for horses, Arcadia says "Horses? What would we do with horses?" To better get to the fire? Surely they wouldn't put the horses near a burning building. In Arcadia's experience, horses are terrified of fire. The thought of putting her dear Fleetfoot anywhere near danger causes a shiver to run down her spine.

"Capital!" To Arcadia, he says, "Well, I'm not really much for manual labor, but I imagine that with horses, we'll be able to move gear around more easily, and get to the different parts of the city much more quickly. Granted, I've never actually handled horses for their intended purposes before, so I'll leave that to the more capable members of our group."

He ponders a while, then says, "Well, if there is no further business here, I shall take my leave. Well, my pay first, then my leave. There are various things I wish to do, and equipment that I shall need to purchase."

To the others, he says: "Of course, if any of you wish to accompany me, I would be glad for the company. And my flat has more than enough room should anyone wish to tag along. Should you choose to, I make rather lovely chocolate cake."

Assuming there is no further business, Kailyn will take his 5 gp and leave for the merchants' area.

I will assume that although Normin is still in possession of the key, everybody got a good look at the address card, and will be able to find the Headquarters on Bad Noodle Lane when they are ready to go there.

Ursula the Rumbleback Orc takes her 5 gold, and says to Kailyn "I'm up for cake, but no funny stuff!" and to the others "I'll see you at Headquarters later this afternoon."

"Very well then, my dear, off we go!"

Kailyn heads out, 5 gp richer. He heads out for Marketday, intent on picking up a few supplies. First and foremost, he'll pick up some food for the Commander, at least another couple weeks' worth. He keeps his eye out for a stylish sword-cane, or more practically, a dagger-cane. It won't be much for fighting, but now that he's given away his mace, he'll need something to hit people with should the need arise. He'll also make sure to pick up a few items that he might need when the next fire rolls around.

Lastly, he'll also look for a scribe or a painter (preferably of the starving-artist variety), pretty much anyone that can paint something heraldic on a wooden shield. He'll commission the person to paint up a shield "per fess azure and gules, a fess undy Or, in dexter chief a sausage, in sinister base a bucket". Well, not an actual shield, more like a piece of cheap wood shaped like a shield. He intends to use it mostly for advertising/PR purposes anyways, not for warding actual blows. He's got his own shield for that.

Kailyn's purchase list:
Starting cash: 21.5 gp

Rabbit food: 2 cp (I'm just assuming a price here, based off the trade goods page)
Dagger-cane: 5 gp (he's willing to pay an extra 2 gp to have his name and "title" engraved/carved into it. For style.
Crowbar: 2 gp
Net: 1 gp
Another basket of fruit: 1 sp

Remaining gold: 14.38 gp

After getting a good look at the address, Sharn heads back down towards the food. She gives Normin a wicked sneer as she comes to understand he's in possession of the only key to some sort of headquarters. She shakes any bad thoughts on the subject out of her head as she begins to eat some of the leftover sausage. They were right not to trust her. The thought of the huge jump in favor she'd gain by turning over the keys to a large headquarters to one of the drug king pins sent her head spinning. "Potions for days," she quietly said to herself.
Sharn grabbed a couple of sausages for the road before going to meet with Boots. She had money to spend.

Kailyn

Kailyn goes shopping!

2 copper buys a week's worth of rabbit food.

He is able to find a sword cane (dagger-club) that he likes for the 5 gold price he is asking.

He is also able to find a larger heavier sword-cane (mace-shortsword) for 15 gold, but perhaps it is too heavy for him.

The weaponsmith agrees to have it engraved, but says the engraving will not be done until tomorrow afternoon.

The crowbar and net are easy to find, and the same fruit-seller who sold him the basket earlier in the morning is delighted to see him again.

I think you made a mistake calculating your remaining cash

He finds a signpainter shop that quotes him a price of 4 gold and a 5-day wait to get his custom-painted heraldic wooden shield.

Outside the same shop, he encounters a moody young dragonborn man with long scales on his chin that look like a scraggly beard. "I could do that for 1 gold, and have it on your doorstep by tomorrow night" he declares boastfully. From his demeanor and clothing, Kailyn can guess that he is probably an art student from the University.

Sharn

Sharn goes looking for Boots.

Sharn spots a fellow "customer" of Boots', an old man hopped up on Hopskootch. The poor guy can't keep both feet on the ground at the same time. She asks if he has seen Boots, and he directs her to the Gutted Sandfish, a hole-in-the-wall restaurant on King's Row on the east side of the Poor Quarter that serves as a front to a flop-house.

When she gets there, she is surprised to see him out front in the restaurant, eating a chicken leg, rather than passed out in the back room. He looks to be in a good mood, and is telling stupid jokes to a man Sharn has never seen before. Each time he tells a bad punchline, he stomps his feet, making a slapping noise with those pitiful leather moccasins he has been wearing ever since his good boots were stolen ages ago.

Why he hasn't gone out and bought a fresh pair of namesake boots is a mystery to her.

"Capital! Here's half of the money. I'll be back here tomorrow with the rest of the money. If it's really great, I'll even throw in another gold piece."

He hands the dragonborn the money. He's about to write down the instructions, when he realizes he doesn't have anything to write with. He simply repeats the instructions, making a mental note to hire a scribe to follow him around. Actually...

"Come to think of it, my good man, how would you like to follow me around? I'm guessing you're a student or something similar, and that must mean you know how to read and write, and I can always use an artist with me. Suppose I were to hire you for... let's say, one gold piece a day? I'm going to be getting involved in some dangerous business, what with this arcane fire-fighting gig, but you won't have to take part in any of that. All you'll need to do is to be on hand should I need you to record something for me, or perhaps to paint something up. What say you?"

Oops! Yeah, my calculations were off. Remaining have been 13.38. Well, 12.38 now that he's hired the starving artist dude.

Lady Kari suddenly realizes that she has forgotten something important on her map.

She takes it back, and quickly sketches in a compass with "South" at the top.

This map might be confusing for those of you who didn't Grow Up in Great Bakak. I have read that in many other lands, North is traditionally placed at the top of the map instead of the bottom

DM wrote:
Yep, they totally do maps Australia-style here!

Then she flips the map upside-down, and shows it to those Firefighters who have not already left the room.

"Sorry about any confusion" she apologizes.

Kailyn

The artist's eyes grow large "1 gold a day? and all I have to do is follow you around and paint pictures of your exploits as an Arcane Firefighter?"

The artist seems to be literally salivating and the prospect of being hired by his first artistic patron.

"...But what about my classes? I still have to go to lectures, so I can't follow you around all the time..."

"One gold a day indeed, my good man, and yes, nothing but going around, writing things down, painting pictures, generally making me look absolutely awesome." he says with a wink.

"As for your classes, you seem the intelligent sort, I'm certain you'll be able to figure something out. I doubt I'll be active every hour of the day, so that should provide you a rather flexible schedule. The main times I'll need you though, are when action is happening. Of course, there will be other times I'll need your services, so I'll need a way to get in touch with you. Nothing too taxing though, mostly just painting pictures, taking notes, and the sort."

Kailyn puts on his best sales-face, and asks, "So, my good man, shall we make my patronage official? Do we have a deal?"
