"I knew it!" shouted Sharn unknowingly. These people are terrible! They're willing to sacrifice people for almost no reason. "All to make sure we can protect the shitty nobles I bet," Sharn blurted. There's no way someone would sign up to sit in a burning building. Did they enthrall them? Who would... Sharn looked down at the kobold child. With a "Cra-CAW-CAW-CRAW-CRAw" and no hesitation, Sharn went sprinting into the tent searching for children.
"Is that all?"
Kailyn unhooks the bucket from his belt and pours water over himself. He then tosses the bucket aside and strides into the tent, ready to scoop up anyone he sees into his arms for a daring and dramatic rescue.

Knowing that he is the least capable of helping, the wizard takes the magical bucket and suggests, "I hadn't the time to study the spell, if somebody more able bodied may take the fire retardant garb I collected, I will fill their pails as they come back out."
He doesn't honestly think the victims planted are in real danger, but he doesn't say that aloud- he'll let the others put a good show for the employer.

"Looks like I'm going in too." Ebald replied, rushing in with his companions. He was a bit put off by the fact that 8 people needing to be rescued was mentioned as an afterthought, but nonetheless there were people who needed to be saved.

To Petrol, Provincial says; "Oh, you, my friends, ees early, but the fire? She is right on time!"
Those with darkvision (everyone but the humans and the halflings) immediately spot two rickety staircases, one to the left and one to the right
The back of the tent is obscured by smoke, but all of you can make out a faint reddish glow in the back
All around are the dangerously thin-looking beams and struts that hold up the slatted second floor.
"Protect the slimy nobles" shouts the blue-ping Kobold child, and she tries to sprint into the burning tent after Sharn, but Bobo and Ursula catch and restrain her.
Death-of-Angels watches silently. The green-yellow Kobold trudges up the hill slowly, clutching Pretty Princess Paladin

Something about this whole affair is...unsettling. Evangeline can't quite put her finger on it. Be it the burning tent that's set up for her test, or the kobold children shouting about slimy nobles.
"Alright, we need some people to rush the water and get that fire out!" She says, trying to sound confident "Once we can secure that, we need some of the party to forray in to the tent and evacuate the people. Everyone got that? Let's go!"
She's also not certain on how she feels about being the leader-type. Kailyn is outspoken, but with his loose ideals and excessive charm, she's not too certain about his "methods". Doubts aside, she puts on a cloak, and reaches for a bucket.

Kailyn kisses his ring upon which his holy symbol is engraved, then holds it up. It glows in a sickly yellow light and bathes him with its radiance, readying him for whatever may come.
With that, he dashes up the stairs to the left. He focuses once more on his holy symbol, causing a gong sound to erupt where he's standing. He continues to do so, making it so that with each few steps a new gong sound tells everyone nearby which direction he is. With luck, any trapped people will hear it and head towards him.
He keeps an eye out for anyone that might look to be trapped. As well as anything that looks like it could be of use. Or anything valuable.

The reddish glow would be the first thing that Petrol sees. "Well, that must be the fire. All that needs to be done is to go over and put it out, then." With that said, he would make a beeline towards the source of the light.
Squinting upwards, he'd also try to see how far up the second story was, and determine whether or not someone could jump down from that height without killing themselves. (Perhaps he could already figure this out just from looking at the tent from the outside.)

Seeing no one to save downstairs, Sharn focuses on the stairs. Sharn thought, Surely these stairs will support my tiny bird body. Even if it collapses, I should be ok. I might need more practice flying but I'm sure these wings will at least help me glide down safely.
"CRA-CAW!"
Sharn dashes up the stairs.

Ebald tries to look around the tent, he has a bit of trouble due to lack of darkvision, but he is able to make out the reddish glow. Maybe he shouldn't have been so cavalier running into the fire right away, but at least he had his fire-protectant cloak on. The others would probably bring water in soon.
(Since I don't have darkvision I should make a perception check or something similar to determine if I can make out where the stairs are?)

Caldon watches in horror as eight persons seem to rush to the tent to rescue eight persons. This has to be more dangerous than just leaving the would-be victims to their own devices.

While Evangeline and Normin remain outside to try and organize, others advance into the smokey darkness.
Petrol moves deeper into the smoke towards the red glow in the back of the first floor.
He can see that the second floor is not terribly high. No openings were visible on the outide of the tent except the front door and the smoke vent on the top, but hypothetically if someone jumped from the second floor, they probably wouldn't die.
As he gets closer to the source of the light, he can see it flickering, and spreading up the back wall of the canvas
Kailyn, Sharn and Cece reach the second floor
From the racket that Kailyn and Sharn are making, Ebald can easily guess the location of stairs, even if he can't see them directly.
The second floor is even more dark and smoky. They will have only a moment to act and then get out again lest they succumb to lack of oxygen.
The roof of the second floor is slanted, like the side of the letter "A" The smoke is thickets at the top, and thinner by the floor.
The middle of the second floor is divided by a fence of vertical support-beams-- not so close that a person could not fit through them, but it would be a squeeze.
On the left side, there are six person-sized shapes slumped on the floor
On the right side are two more person-sized shapes, and two more sources of flame. One in the corner close to the top of the right stairs, and one way back in the far right corner.
There is also just a hint of light filtering down from the smoke-vent way up above in the peak of the tent, but the smoke is so thick up there, like frosting being squeezed through a confectioner's funnel, that it is almost completely obscured.

Hmm, bodies... but there doesn't seem to be quite enough light for the others to see by. Kailyn focuses on the fire that he can see and channels divine energy into it, making it flare incredibly bright and turning from red to nearly pure white so as to provide illumination for the others.
He unclips his soaked cape and moves to the bodies. He drapes the cloth over the figures and starts to carry out drag as many as he can. When he gets to the stairs, he calls out, magically amplifying his voice: "Hey, someone down there, we've got survivors! Catch!"
And then pushes the bodies down before going back to rescue some more.
