Welp. I didn't accomplish as much as I was hoping to, but I've got to the point where I'm not actually disappointed with my game. In fact, I think it's pretty decent! However, considering I was working on a major rewrite of the entire story which is most likely not going to be finished any time soon, I won't be releasing the New-N'-Tasty™ version for HOTOHR. Just the olde one. But ya know, there is that bonus window...

So is the version you uploaded is the same as what I got from Gamejolt a month or two ago?
Foxley: it's too bad to hear that. But definitely, if trying to meet a game-making contest deadline is giving you a lot of grief, drop it. I usually hate having an ominous deadline hanging over me, it ruins my week/month, but on the other hand I actually really enjoy the challenge of trying to meet the deadline of a contest, even (especially!) with a ridiculous timetable, because I usually find contests/challenges a lot of fun. For longer projects, e.g. typical RPGs or the HotOHR, the fun can easily into work, but hopefully that's still counterbalanced by the satisfaction of the craft.

I actually did play Sour City. I've got some feedbackz:
There are a lot of places where the layering is wonky. Like the bottom of fences or signs will appear above the player.
There all also a lot of places where the wallmaps are broken. I found myself walking through walls. Like, a lot.
If you get into the rightmost house in the town place, there's no way to leave besides activating the walk through walls cheat and going into the lawyer's office.
You might want to lock the lawyer's office after getting Johnny, because if you go back in, then you can do the whole ATM sequence again (with glitchy results).
I like the walkabouts and portraits (especially the main character's portrait [his name escapes me at the moment]). The in-battle sprites are kinda meh. A bit sloppy tbh, but who am I to talk ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. And the battle backgrounds look iffy. Just streched screenshots iirc. And in at least one (the battle with the hooker) I can see the titlebar of your custom.exe.
The minigames are rad. I love the skating one the most. (It's a bit jittery due to the OHR's awful framerate though. This is one of those times where I wish it weren't such a hassle to raise it above 18.2 FPS :/ ) I had some problems with the bike one where it'd turn without any warning and I'd crash, but that could easily be fixed with a little flashing "you gotta turn soon, bud" arrow or reducing speed temporarily or something.
The boxes appear to have infinite uses. I stocked up on a tonne of 9mm by exploiting it. (tee-hee)
I only played as far as beating the pimp, then I had no idea where to go.
Hope that's feedbacky enough.

Thanks a lot taco bot. I haven't worked on this in a few months so I figured I'd throw it up here now because who knows when I will get back to this. I'm not even sure where I left off. Really appreciate the feedback.. I think the skateboard section was the only part I felt finished with.... There is also some pretty funny scenes after the pimp if you find where to go.
I played Sour City and really enjoyed it. The minigames were fun and I liked the whole adult cartoon sort of aesthetic. It was really fun.
I found the lawyer bug Taco mentioned in his post, and also in the beginning at George's house when the people are questioning George, once I picked the third option and instead of the skateboard minigame happening George just rode away to the side in front of the house, the minigame never started, and I couldn't do anything.
Anyways I posted my game so if anybody wants to try it they're welcome to.

Ah, thanks. Great to hear that. Not sure how well the 3d mapping thing will work once I get to later areas in the game, but I'll deal with that issue when I get there.
Anyway, I've been doing some general fixing up of mechanics stuff today, so hopefully I can get this to the point of being playable through to the end of the demo by the end of the week, and actually be able to release by the deadline.
Still have a lot of assets to draw before that point, though.

I'm hoping to have all of Surfasaurus done by the 31st and am counting on an update by the 15th of August.
This is kind of the first game I've attempted to manipulate the master palette to get different effects and such. I'm especially proud of how areas like this, the volcano are turning out. I'm looking forward to playing the entries this year.

Just want to remind everyone that games released on or before July 31st are subject to feedback *before* they are subject to votes. This is to help the entrants squash any bugs they've missed before the final deadline. When we begin voting, it should be based on the versions of each game posted by August 15th. For those of you who plan to play these games only once, you may want to wait until August 16th, when voting is officially open, for your first impressions. For those of you who enjoy helping others improve, then I encourage you to start playing now.
And I want to build a list of eligible releases soon. Can those of you who have submitted your first releases send me a link, or post one here? I know the numbers are light this year, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anyone.
