Fun Farming Fact #9:

Farmers will sometimes plant tall, dense trees surrounding fruit tree orchards as a windbreak to protect the soil. Additionally, the size and height of fruit trees and bushes do not determine it's productivity. Farmers often restrict the size of trees and bushes to grow more fruit in a smaller space, because big trees do not make more fruit.

Fruit farming began somewhere between 6000 and 3000 BC, generally after the cultivation of grains, such as wheat and barley. Mediterranean fruits, such as the date, olive, fig, grape, and pomegranate were some of the first to be cultivated. Stone fruits, such as almonds, apricots, cherries, peaches, and plums, were cultivated in Central and East Asia and the practice spread to the West. Fruit bearing branches generally require more attention and care and are more susceptible to environmental troubles, like pests and weather. Because it is easier and more efficient to raise crops like wheat and other cereals, especially in less inviting climates, fruits have not been priority throughout history, at least when it comes to feeding a population.

Thank you for putting this together.

Some questions:
How many entries are there so far?
Would you be in favor of extending the deadline for people like me who just saw this?
Where should we submit our entries- and would you be in favor of making an itch.io/jam page to increase visibility?

Some answers:
1. Absolutely no idea. Like 4, I think.
2. I would love to see your game, you will not receive any penalty if your game is late. I don't like pushing back deadlines, first for the people that have been here since the beginning, and also because it devalues any sense of urgency. You should have seen Gizmog's response to Spoon in the Collab Contest. Also, that would mean having to look for more farming facts, and I'll tell you now, I'm running out of ideas. But you may have more time, of course. How Friday, August 21 sound?
3. Post them on the Games section of this forum. I have no idea what itch.io/jam is, but I'll look into it. I think it's a little late to be looking for more contestants, but if I do a contest in the future, I'll consider it then.

EDIT: I think Fun Farming Fact #10 took a holiday because I can't find it. One moment please.

My entry is not going well, but then again I don't think anything I ever did looked good till the last couple of hours. 50/50 chance of a release.

Maybe some farming facts can help, eh? Some statistics about water usage might reeeaaally tie that game together. But seriously, something is better than nothing. If necessary, I might not "have time" on Monday to play it.

An interesting farming fact is that in some Mediterranean country it used to be a crime, punishable by death, to cut down an olive tree. They were so important to the economy they couldn't be wasted, even be accident! That's why olive branches are generally considered a sign of peace and prosperity: There was enough olives that year they could afford to waste a little.

Fun Farming Fact #10:

Candy corn is not, in fact, a vegetable. It is candy, as the name suggests. However, candy corn can easily be mistaken for real corn, the filthy imposter. In its attempt to fool you, you may be eating raw corn and think, "Wow this is some sugary and delicious corn!" But be wary! as you may be another victim of candy corn's vicious ruse.

Drawing corn is difficult.

To those involved:

I hope all is going well, and that you are satisfied with at least some part of what you have created. Whatever it is, it is something to be proud of. This weekend for me is trying to tighten up my game, which I assure you is not the most impressive thing. Farming fact #9 was the last fact I had, and I will post a bibliography below, as promised, showing all of the sources I used if you care to review them.

I also ask for input on how you feel about the quality of this contest, so I may learn what I can do better, what worked and what didn't. If you did join in and follow the facts, did the facts give more incentive, make it boring, or something else? If you saw this but were not a contestant, was there anything that you saw with an outside perspective that you think didn't work, or something that you thought worked well? Finally, if you have any suggestions for making the contest more exciting, more productive, more professional, etc., please let me know so that I can get better at doing this and perhaps give people better opportunities to create content. Thank you all.

Bibliography using EasyBib.com:

This website is great because it makes storing your sources infinitely easier than manually filling in an MLA format bib entry. For websites, you can just copy and paste the link and it will acquire all of the information it can by itself. So it was way easier to go back and find pages that you were looking at earlier. Or you could just bookmark them. Oh, and it's free.[/list]

Ok, Sprout is now playable from beginning to end, so I posted it on the Games thread. Mind the shoddy graphics. I didn't put a lot of time into the visuals because I wanted it to be playable first. I will continue to work on it.

EDIT: By the way, it's like 5 minutes long or less if you know how to beat it.

Okay everyone it's August 17. Technically voting starts today, so if you've got a game, or part of one, upload it.

Late submissions are accepted, however I would appreciate a confirmation from anyone who will be late so I know if I'm waiting for nothing or not.

I'm really liking it so far. The title screen really captures the simplicity of the game. I give it a 9/9.
