Thoughts on getting an artist/designer moving?

So yes. The holidays are over. I wish I felt more refreshed and ready to come out swinging creatively as I'd hoped I would after all that time off, but hey, I'll take what I can get. I haven't worked on my game for pretty much a whole month, but one of my part time job contracts ends one week from now, so now is the time to strike while the iron is ... uh, cold.

Anyways, on to the topic of the thread: I asked a friend if he would be willing to provide monster designs and sprites for my game, since I find myself at a brick wall in terms of doing them myself. Don't know why; I have no problem designing PCs and NPCs.

I asked him this a few months ago and he agreed, and I have confidence he'll end up doing a great job with it. But so far I haven't seen even any concept sketches, roughs or preliminaries from him. I'm certainly not going to pressure him or bitch him out for it, but having some creative input into the project would really help me out and boost my confidence.

So does anyone have any advice, or any similar experiences? I'm thinking of doing some mockups, see if he can do anything with them, just so he has a bit more to get started with.

Welcome to the wonders of collaboration!
An artist taking an extra long time is basically the norm. What worked well for me/RMZ while making Graffiti Goose was to involve money. Because money was involved we both took things very seriously. I don't think it needs to be a large amount of money. Just enough to make thing important.

In the past, I've run into artists completely vanishing. The best thing, aside from money, that I've found to do is simply talk to them. Everytime I would talk with the artist about the project, we'd both leave the conversation with new passion for the project. This wouldn't be about urging either person to work more. This would simply be discussing the game. Maybe character traits, plot developments, gameplay mechanics, anything that the two, or more, of you want to talk about for the game.
