Galse, frustrated at yet another enemy who can't be dealt with via a swift sap to the back of the skull, gets out a piece of bread and breaks it, throwing a few crumbs towards the squirrels to make a trail, and then throwing the remainder of the loaf at the ooze to create the greatest trap in the history of mankind.

The party attacks. Kalar uses his divine power, as well as his silver tongue, to increase the party's moral. Silas shoots off a glob of acid at the ooze as Thistlewhistle drags him out of the oozes reach. Lynda fires two arrows deep into the ooze.
Galse decides to try a different tactic. He attempts to lure one of the squirrels he saw towards the ooze. He creates a bread line from the ooze towards the squirrels. He gets a squirrels attention very quickly and the squirrel begins eating the bread on it's way towards the ooze.
The ooze flails it's gooey appendages at the party. Thistlewhistle gets smashed in the face. Kalar takes a hit to the chest.
The party groups up to fight the ooze. Lynda fires 2 more arrows into the ooze. Kalar and Thistlewhistle take up defensive positions and Silas decides whether he should cast another spell or not. Galse watches as the squirrel gets ever closer tot he ooze.
The ooze swipes at Galse but misses. Then it smashes down on to the squirrel. The squirrel dies instantly.
KRACK.
Just as the squirrel dies, the hillside on the other side of the path suddenly cracks open and a number of mounted creatures begin to ride out. Two of the riders are Gnolls who are riding dire wolves. The third rider seems human. He is riding a large stag and wearing antlers upon his head. A dire badger also accompanies them.
The riders charge directly at the ooze, completely ignoring the party. In less than 10 seconds, the ooze is completely destroyed. With that the riders charge back into the crack in the hillside. The hillside closes up, the ooze is now only stains on the ground and no sign of the riders remains.
Galse gets a superior look on his face.

Panting from the exertion, Kalar says, "Did... did those riders just avenge that squirrel?"

Kalar shakes his head, wondering what other sort of madness waits for them here.

"Galse, great work with the squirrels there, we couldn't have done it without out. And Lynda, you'll probably be able to check out that chest now."

Unless, of course, there's yet another monstrosity lying in wait, Kalar thinks to himself.

He turns to the others and says, "Is anyone badly injured? If you are, come see me, and I'll patch you up."

Galse scratches his head. That wasn't exactly what he thought would happen, but praise is praise. Better just go with it. He gives whatever's left of the squirrel a tough-guy nod. Didn't think it'd end that way for you, but at least you died well fed.

Silas calmly returns to the inspection (and interrogation) of the gargoyles and fountain that was interrupted by the monster

Nothing else seems to be in the pond. The gargoyles do indeed seem to be simply statues. The chest is large, iron and locked. The lock is built into the chest making in attempt at breaking into the chest difficult to be sure.

Kalar has absolutely no intention of going the same way as poor Ardan, but he does want to see what's inside the chest. There might be another key, and the party certainly needed the previous one to get away from that lion-thing.

He takes a look at Lynda, but doesn't thing she looks quite strong enough. Galse could certainly do it, but so far he's been one of the more reliable people around, so it would be a shame to risk him. Silas looks like he'd be the one to break first if he tried to use brute force on the lock. That leaves...

"Gnome, we need your assistance. Here." he says as he hands Thistelwhistle the javelin he'd previously handed over to Lynda. "See if you can use this as an impromptu crowbar to break the lock off that chest."

With that, he makes a show of keeping a lookout for anything that might be coming up from behind, but in actuality is keeping well away should the chest have some sort of trap.

Silas wanders away, looking around as he goes.

Not in the direction they came from, and not in the direction the riders came from.

As the party tried to figure out how they should get the large gargoyled chest open Silas walks off. He notices more of the squirrels turning the acorns to gold and sees where all the squirrels are hiding their golden acorns. Just around the bend, out of sight of the others, Silas comes to a fork in the path. Down one path is a large door against the wall of the domed in forest. Down the other path, the flora seems to overtake the path more and more. Vines cross through the path, bushes grow out over the path and branches hang low overhead.

Thistlewhistle still makes an irritated face, when the riders have disappeared.
He takes the javelin from Kalar with skaking hands and tries to open the chest, while muttering something about headache.

(Strength Check*)
Thistlewhistle tries his best to pry open the chest, but can't seem to get it to budge. The javelin cracks a bit before Thistlewhistle gives up.

*Wasn't sure were Thistlewhistle's character sheet was. Is he a default fighter? I heard something about him being a bard. I was going to wait till I got this info to do the check, but I did the roll and even with a strength of 20, one would need a 15 to break the chest in this way. The roll was an 8.

Seeing Thistlewhistle fail, Kalar takes back his javelin.

"Hmm, waste of a good weapon. Well, still usable for something else down the road, I suppose."

He takes a look at the chest, wondering if what's inside really is worth the trouble. On the one hand, it could (like the other chests prior) contain a key that will prove useful later. On the other hand, if one of them dies while trying to open it (like poor Ardan), then Kalar's chances of getting out of there alive decrease. What to do, what to do...

Well, nothing for it then. Kalar walks around 10 feet away from the chest, a distance he feels is well away from any potential traps. He focuses his mind and gathers what power he can muster, then channels it all into a powerful scream directed at the lock on the chest. He hopes that the sonic attack will shatter the hard metal of the lock while leaving whatever's inside relatively unscathed.

*Here's Thistlewhistle's character sheet.

the scroll
Sonic Boom!
Kalar blasts a hole in the front of the chest. The chest opens up and there seems to be no trap. The sonic boom damaged some of the coins and there seems to be a scroll that has some holes in it now.

The contents of the chest include:
A large ornate silver key the size of a short sword
the damaged scroll
25 damaged coins
475 gp
70 sp
a feather token
a necklace
a cloak

Well... that went, differently than expected... Still, results are results.

Before touching any of the gear, Kalar raises his holy symbol up and tries to determine if any of the items are magical in nature.

*whether or not he finds it magical, Kalar will lay claim to the cloak.

Silas ignores the golden acorns. He isn't interested in gold at the moment.

He strolls very slowly along the fork of the path that appears to lead out of the forest-dome. He isn't actively trying to lose the others, and would prefer to stay in shouting-range, so he can run back if something terrible happens.

WHEN something terrible happens.
