"Everyone! Behind the ditch and palisade! If those things are coming this way, the defenses should slow them down some, but it might be best to bottleneck them in the longhouse. I'm taking to the skies to get a better look. Might also be able to make a few preemptive strikes if need be."
Kalar focuses on his holy symbol and channels power into himself, strengthening his bones to iron. He then mounts Bill and takes flies upwards to get a better look at what they might be facing. He makes sure to fly higher than sixty feet or so, as he doubts they would be able to hit him at that range whereas he should be able to quite easily.
Spell cast: Iron bones (Spell Compendium) +6 natural armor bonus for 90 minutes.
Current AC: 10 + 9 (Armor) + 6 (Shield) + 1 (Dex) + 6 (Natural) = 32

Kalar flies around, heading in the direction of the screeching. He'd feel a lot safer knowing where it was coming from, and how many they would have to deal with.

from the treasure pile, Rob puts on the Ring of the Ram, and pockets the Tan Bag of Tricks.
Then he mounts Stumpy, and waits to see what will attack them.
"I wish Voulton was here..." Rob says, glancing in the direction of the corpse in hopefully not-so-eternal repose in the long-house.

Kalar flies off to the west, in the direction of the screeching. Those int he camp quickly lose sight of him as he goes over a few hills and rocky outcroppings.
In no time at all, Kalar spots some of the small creatures darting from bush to bush. However, they don't seem to be the ones making the noise. Kalar can tell he's getting closer to the source, but realizes that he's a good distance form the others at this point, and has completely lost sight of the camp. While deciding whether to keep searching, Kalar caught something fly above a hill for a moment, in the direction of the screeching.

THE AFTERLIFE
Voulton's beard grows longer and his home more comfortable, as the hole he's made in the woods widens out. Comfort, sadly, is not as comforting as it once was. Work is the most satisfying time of the day, with the flying splinters and crashing wood bringing temporary life to the dull surroundings.
The loneliness is finally starting to set in. Without anyone to protect, anyone to appreciate his work, or even someone to think he's a monster Voulton doesn't know what to think of himself. As the weeks go on, the deja vu gets worse. "I've cut this same tree down at least 5 times now! There's the one those wizards jumped out from behind. And the ones we caged the werewolves with!"
"I'm going nuts.. I been out here too long.. trees all look the same anyw.." but the thought is interrupted. He'd wandered into a clearing, the first clearing he'd found in this new place that he hadn't cut out himself. And there in the center of the clearing is a sight he thought he'd never see, a sight he'd braced himself to remember for even hundreds of years:
A distinctive ring of acorns around the place where a portal oughta be. Only this time, they've started to grow.

Kalar is torn. Going after the sound alone is dangerous, but it's also equally dangerous to go into things without knowing what's coming.
Eventually he decides to investigate, but he has Bill fly even higher, higher than most birds or other flying animals would. At the very least, several hundred feet up. Neither he nor Bill need to breathe, so the thin air and the cold shouldn't be of any difficulty.
Just in case though, he readies a spell to preemptively attack anything that might possibly be hostile.

Kalar flies very high into the air as he sails off towards the screeching. As he travels, he comes across a valley, several miles from camp, that seems to be completely full of creatures. It's hard to tell how many there are from the height, but Kalar can easily estimate over a hundred. In the middle of the swarm, Kalar seems a very large creature. Flying creature buzz around it, though no where near the height Kalar has decided to fly at. The large creature seems to be the source of the screeching. Kalar can't gain anymore information from his current height.
Kalar settles in to rest, and sends his skeletons into a perimeter. Then he gets an idea.
"Hrulgin, our forces here are severely depleted. Do you think you could head through the portal to the ghoul lands to see if you could round up some troops? If at all possible intelligent creatures, though skeletons are acceptable."
When Hrulgin sets off, he'll get back to his book, and later working on the second glove.
Leadership slots available:
1st/2nd/3rd
25/2/1
If the +2 modifier for "Has a stronghold, base of operations, guildhouse, or the like" applies, then the slots are:
1st/2nd/3rd/4th
35/3/1/1

"So they are just massing there, and not coming any closer?" Rob asks.
He bookmarks the Enchiridon of Kurda, and spends the last hour before sleep playing the Lyre of Building to further fortify the area with higher walls, deeper trenches, and a "bottleneck" fortification in the direction that Kalar indicated.

"Indeed. But there are well over a hundred there, and if what you told me about your first encounter with them is of any indication, then we could be in for some difficulty. It might be wise to completely seal this place off with a high wall, and instead rely on flight or teleportation to move around. Or, if we can get a large river ship built, that might work as well. Anything that prevents them from using their numbers against us."

THE AFTERLIFE
Voulton has sat and watched the ring of saplings intently. There's doubt in his mind that these are the same ones he planted as a time travel experiment.. but why are they here? Why are they the ONLY saplings here? The only not trees? Who's running this place? What are they trying to say?

THE AFTERLIFE
Voulton felt a tingle in his pants. A lady appeared in front or him. He had never met her before, but friends of his knew her as Sephora, which he oddly became aware of out of no where. She was dressed in an almost completely see through silk gown. Voulton felt that Her beauty was unlike anything he had ever seen or would see. Voulton felt that he had never really knew what love was until now. She approached. He let his guard down and completely submitted as the lady embraced him gently. She placed her lips on his check, giving him the most prized kiss he thought he might ever receive. Then she was gone.
