Rachelle and Voulton advanced. The mummy, seeing the threat, stepped back and unleashed one of it's more powerful spells. His spell could slay any living creature that was not powerful enough to withstand his magic. He aimed carefully, and let it loose. A party member fell to the floor, dead instantly.
The mummy was then finished off with the next attack. It crumbled under the weight of the terrible strike. For a moment, the mummy's rags covered the knife it was holding. This caused the room to suddenly flash back to light. In that moment, Rob looked back to see Voulton laying on the floor, unmoving. The rags shifted off the blade and the darkness returned, hiding the body of their friend from sight once more.

"Blast."

Kalar runs over across the walls to the others. He kicks the mummy's knife into the pit, hoping to restore vision again.

"Hurry, let's get him back to the camp. We need to rest after this, but tomorrow I can bring him back."

Kalar orders Bill to fly back to the skeletons, and then orders three skeletons to grab onto Bill's saddle before coming back. He'll have two skeletons load all of the treasures they can into Bill's saddlebags, while the third ties Voulton onto Bill's saddle for transport back to the camp.

It doesn't take long for Kalar to react after the rest of the party informs him of what they saw during the flash of light. Being aware of the way clerical spells like those the mummy was using work, Kalar was able to find the knife he had cast the darkness spell on quickly. After covering the knife, everyone else could see again under the light of their lantern.
Voulton was dead. Kalar, not one for sentimentality, quickly went about as if Voulton's death was just another problem to solve. His skeletons began loading things up, as they were before the mummy attacked. The party watched as one of Kalar's skeletons tied Voulton to Bill. It was clear to everyone that the skeleton had done a terrible job.

"Yeah, that won't do."

Kalar moves in to tie the ropes himself, making sure Voulton won't fall off. He then places the ring of flying onto his finger, ready to catch Voulton's body in case it falls off.

He looks over the rest of the room, trying to figure out as much about it as he can. He orders one of the skeletons to take the mummy's wrappings, but to keep them separate. They might be useful later. He also analyzes the sarcophagus, seeing if there are any markings there that might be informative.

As soon as everything is loaded, he will mount Bill (to make sure he has a firm hold on Voulton's body) and then lead the way to the camp. The three skeletons will grab onto Bill as best as they're able. If need be, he'll make multiple trips to get everyone across safely.

MEANWHILE, IN THE AFTERLIFE..
Voulton can see again! "And I'm in the woods!" But not the woods of Averoigne... not the woods of home either. The sloppy green armor is gone, as are his friends. His calls of greeting go unanswered. There's not a sign of life around, no birds in the trees, no chipmunks, not even wind rustling the grass. The sky is a formless gray blob that offers no clue as to whether it's night or day.

The only thing there, outside of Voulton and the trees, is a simple wood axe on the ground at his feet. He picks it up, his big hands a comical contrast to the normal sized axe.

With a last look around, and a hope that his friends are safe, Voulton begins chopping at the nearest tree. The simple axe doesn't tear through the bark the way his old one did, and already he feels strain in muscles he hadn't used for a long time..

Rob lingers behind. He will keep his hippogriff summoned as long as he can, so it can help prevent any further rope-crossing accidents-- even a skeleton falling into that put would be an unpleasant feeling.

Rob gives Rachelle an encouraging pat on the shoulder "Good work there." he says solemnly. "I'm sure Kalar will be able to help Voulton in the morning"

In Rob's mind, Voulton isn't really dead yet-- just mostly dead... and mostly dead is still party alive.

Rob wonders if Voulton will become a Lizardfolk too when he rises back to life. That seems to be what happens. He idly speculates whether Lizard-Voulton will be more amenable to trying out the Hat of Disguise than Rachelle was.

Rob watches the Skeletons load treasure, but won't offer to help unless it looks like they are having trouble.

The fighting had ended. Kalar and Rob began the process of shuttling the party over the pit and then the loot to the camp. Along with the items Kalar had found were magical, 23,000 gold pieces were also found. 5 emeralds, 3 rubies, 7 diamonds, and a topaz were found in the gold. There was also a golden sword that Kalar and Rob both double checked to make sure it was not magical. As they did, they detected the items worn by the mummy. Kalar quickly identifies the items to find that they are:

    +2 half-plate armor
    cloak of resistance +2
ring of minor energy resistance (fire)
    brooch of shielding

Eventually, the loot was all brought back to the camp. It was displayed and explained for all the party to pick and choose from before including it with the rest of the items the party planned to sell.

Back by the wagon, Rob picks up the Lyre of Building and examines it.

He waits until a moment when Kalar does not seem busy, and then asks "What is this Lyre? I recognize some of the markings on it, but I have never seen anything like it. What sort of enchantment am I going to unleash if I start to play it?"

"If none of you object, I will claim this ring off flying and the rod of the viper.

"As for that lyre, you will be able to duplicate the work of a hundred men working for days at building a structure, but you need only play for half an hour."

Kalar looks at the gems, jewels, and gems.

"As for these, I say we divide the gold evenly, but keep the gems and golden sword in a group fund. Again, if no one objects."

Kalar begins healing his wounds up and says to the others, "If any of you are injured, see me and I will heal your wounds."

As soon as everyone is healed and the treasure is sorted, Kalar will begin to make camp so that everyone can get rested. He'll have his skeletons make a perimeter again. He'll also check on the progress of his unseen crafter before setting down to rest as well with the book about the undead.

"A hundred men? Interesting..."

Rob looks over to where Voulton is layed out. "Maybe we should cover him until morning?"

Rob takes the Lyre and begins to sing;

"Build a long-house here this eve,
Though we do not truly grieve,
For in the morning as from a sleep,
Up by magic he may leap,
Let him rise with roof o'erhead,
Let us not under stars make bed,
Let this be a restful night,
That we honor Voulton's plight,
For though today we shed not tears,
Death comes to all at the end of our years"

Rob will direct the magic of the Lyre to build a sturdy log cabin big enough for all of them to sleep in. He tries to imagine what houses look like in the strange and magical forested land populated entirely by lumberjacks, from whence Voulton came.

Kalar whispers to Rob, not wanting to interrupt his performance.

"See if you can make a palisade bordering the ditch I had constructed. It will improve our defenses here."

The magic of the lyre began chopping trees for wood. The speed at which it was done was remarkable. The work was hard to ignore. It disrupted the whole camp, stopping any sort of reading that might have been had. In almost no time at all, the cabin began to take shape.

THE AFTERLIFE
It feels like it's been weeks. Wandering in any direction just leads to more trees, more nothing. With nothing better to do Voulton has resumed cutting down the trees, finding comfort in the familliar rhythm of heavy labor. Though he's felt the pain and exertion of the hard work, he hasn't had need for sleep, for food or even drink. By now he's built himself a shelter for the times that his muscles ache too much to keep working. Lacking tools, it's basically just an elaborately fitted together pile of logs.

Honestly, he doesn't need it. There hasn't been even a hint of rain or a breath of wind. But something about this lifeless, still world is unsettling and the wooden walls provide mental comfort. Time to wonder "Why am I here? By whose power? What do they want?". Voulton wishes he'd paid more attention to religion in life, to know if there's something expected of him. "I suppose if there is, they'd have to tell me. If they want me, they'll know where to find me."

As the work goes on, some of the trees start to seem familliar. "Didn't I use one with a split like this when I fixed the wagon? Isn't this the knothole that used to be on top of the old bar?" It's the same... yet different. It's neither pleasant nor unpleasant, though in comparison to adventuring its dreadfully dull.

"That is most impressive."

Kalar turns to the rest and says, "I do believe we'll be able to make a permanent fortress of our own here. And it won't be too difficult for me to supply it with guards."

He thinks for a moment before continuing, "It might also be a good idea to begin setting up wards in this place."

Kalar takes the skull he had been carrying in his pack and presses his holy symbol to it. After a few moments, he takes it to the palisade and allows it to float up facing the path towards the river. He also keys it so that it will not be triggered by party members or by mundane vermin.

With that done, and with it being too noisy to read, he continues work on the final part of the glove he'd been working on.

Spell cast: Skull watch (Spell Compendium)

Permanent floating skull, triggers upon encountering any living creature entering its line of sight (20 feet by 90 feet). Upon triggering, it screams and deafens all creatures within 60 feet on a failed DC 20 Fort save. Kalar is immediately made aware that it has been triggered, no matter how far away he is. Alarm resets in 1d4 rounds. Can be moved if approached from out of its line of sight or if the creature moving it is keyed to not trigger it.

It wasn't long before Rob's creation was finished. He even added in a few suggestion Kalar made. It stood about 100 feet away from the original camp. The party investigated the new construction to find it sturdy and well made.
The rest of the day was spent sorting through treasure, reading, and setting things up in the new base of operations. However, a few hours after Rob was done building with his new magic lyre, the screeching began. The screeching that the party had assumed was coming from the reptilian bugs had only been heard at night before now. Now the screeching was louder than ever and happening in the afternoon.
