"I think we have a mirror with us. We were going to get one of the items from the ruins here," Rachelle replies, "but one of our party members got poisoned and someone who was chained up in the ruins needs to get back to civilization".
"So what was happening with the mists, anyway?"
"One of the items here? I doubt that. I assume you don't have the ring in any case. That would be a little too impressive," Dan says with a grin. "I came here to do more than fix that barrier problem, uh, Son. I was going to put this off meeting with you all until I had more practice with the spell I've been researching, but I guess this is as good a time as any."
Dan pulls a chair out of his pocket and sits down on it. "I'm planning to break this curse and I hope you will be able to help me. Let me start at the beginning though. A long time ago, I came to this place much the way you did," Dan looks at Rob then and says, "Well I guess not you."
"I was with a very powerful group. We managed to escape the castle, collect the curse breaking items, and defeat the big bad boss man. We thought we were free. It was my friend Teekbo that snapped us out of the illusion we had been under. We awoke back in Averoigne forest as if our final fight had never happened. Well, almost as if it had never happened."
Dan took a deep breath before the next part, "I would later learn that the big bad boss man we fought was an agent of Levitus. We really did kill him. What we had not done was ever actually assemble the items correctly. An illusion had been placed on the ring to make us all believe it was on the mirror. After we smashed the mirror with the sword they both dissappeared. So, I've come to warn you. Collecting the items won't break the curse."

So these ruins were a false lead. Figures, Rachelle thinks, while also mulling over Dan's comment.
"Have you manged to meet up with any other adventurers who came through the castle? We've met up with another group that seemed to have done the same thing as you, with about as much luck."

"So, if that's the case, what happens once the curse is broken?"
Kalar leaves out that he knows what will happen, as he is interested to learn just how much this individual knows.

"A lot of questions incoming I'm guessing. Glad I brought this chair," Dan says. He gives a stretch then begins his replies. "Well first, I think you asked about the mist. That was me. The spell I designed to dispel the ring also works on the mist. I cast it on all of you to make sure you weren't under any demonic illusions." Dan points at Kalar and says, "I'm still not completely sure you aren't."
"Next, I have met others from Castle Amber, but I would love to hear about who you have met and what you know. I haven't heard of anyone else assembling the items, so it sounds like you have information that I don't. As far as what happens when the curse is broken, I would guess this kingdom will go back to the material plane it came from and everyone pulled here will go back to where ever it was they came from. Anything else?"

"With regards to returning to the material world, you're not quite correct. I have since learned a few things from my deity. Once the spell is dispelled, it will release a powerful high general of Baalzebul who will kill us all and then go on to ravage and destroy all sorts of things on the material plane. Not something which I would enjoy or even condone. If we are to break the curse, we'll need to be sure to destroy that general first.
"You do not know me, but my comrades will attest to the fact that when I give my word, I keep it. And I give you my solemn word that I have not affiliated myself with any sort of demon, and I have no intention of doing so in the near or distant future."

"I didn't think you had aligned yourself with any demons. I mean, I do now." Dan grins. "Baalzebul? This is the first I'm hearing of him being involved. I did learn that there was a very powerful being guarding the tomb that holds the secret to breaking this curse. I suppose that might be this general you're talking about."
"If that's all the questions," Dan said. "I have some of my own. Such as, where are you all going and what is your plan?"

I'm pretty sure it was Helena on the boat who told us this, and thus would've been Voulton to hear and not Galse. If I'm wrong, disregard this post!
Voulton ignores Kalar and hopes to pre-empt a fight with friendly exchange of information. "We thought there might be some kind of a trick to this. A halfling ship captain warned us that her group had been forced to vandalize the inscription inside of the coffin after succesfully assembling the items and that our mission was doomed to fail."
"Later events sent us back in time, and it's possible that their mission has now failed or never happened. It's also possible that their mission itself was an illusion, as was their failure.. at any rate, it seemed to have had the desired effect of scaring them out of the adventuring business."
"Even after witnessing your power, I hate to name names. Your motives remain unclear and I'd hate to put anyone in undue danger. There was also a powerful sorceror involved, who we believed to be a traitor to the group and a dragon who was of some note before we went back in time and seems to have vanished now that we've returned."
"The part that's gripped my curiosity the most is the time travel potion. We break the mirror and then use the time travel potion. I'd assumed breaking the mirror would displace us and the potion would be necessary to take us somewhere useful, but now I wonder if the potion is part of the... flim-flammery."
Voulton also decides now is as good a time as any and discloses the silver vial that Tammytharn had given him. "We've heard rumors as to what it does, a powerful conduit to nearby demons or deities and the stuff that reality is made of in this plane. I've been unsure of it or its role to play in our quest."

"Interesting," said Dan as he turned away from Kalar, holding a hand up towards him. "So the secret to breaking the curse was destroyed? That WOULD explain why a powerful beings like Azedarc seem stuck here." Dan sat and thought about Voulton had just shared. It seems like most of what was said was news to him.
"I have seen something like that liquid. It was when I looked past the myst. There is a sea of that stuff. Worse than that, there is a large swarm of weird bug creatures out there. Some of them looked to be as big as a house. Thankfully, the barrier seems to keep them out. I don't know what that stuff is, but if it came from over there, I doubt it's good."

"Those are probably the forces of a deity or the other, perhaps one of the arch devils of the nine hells. This place is located rather close to the nine hells in its own little demi-plane, a demi-plane that was originally used as a meeting place and war zone for the arch devils and other deities.
"And that silvery stuff is what this demi-plane is made of. It allows deities to directly interact with whatever it is applied to. The liquid in question isn't evil, but it's not good either. It's just substance. What makes it good or evil is whichever deity decides to influence it."
Kalar doesn't mention the accusation just yet, but he keeps the insult in mind. It's not something that he will forget any time soon.

"As I say though, it's possible that through our intervention in the past (At the request of an entity which claimed to be Lady Sephora or Lady Sylaire, I can never remember which is the lady and which is the sword, he sheepishly admits) that their group fell apart, never assembled the items and thus never vandalized the tomb... though if the demon is still interested, presumably somebody broke the damn thing anyway."
There's been a lot of bad news for Voulton as well and he sits on the ground to think about it. "Our plan *HAD* been to gather the items, break the curse, and return to our homes... on the bad days, just that last one. We're returning from the ruins of Ylourgne. Vyones was attacked by a giant undead beast, and in the chaos we lost our party's zombie manticore from the past. We traced it up here and were hoping to retrieve it, as well as determine whether or not Nathaire had been killed with the Colossus at Vyones. The lair was empty, save for some skeletons, a man with fangs who was turned to dust by the Sword of Sylaire, a dude who had been bitten in the neck area... I don't remember what became of him? I believe he was dead. And imprisoned in the dungeon was the Duchess of La Frenale, a Claire de Alerouge."
He looks around for her, wondering if it's safe to mention that she's got a screw loose.
"Our investigation and search for Bill, the manticore, was cut short by Lynda being poisoned by a trap. And as we worked on a cure the walls started closing in and that's about where you showed up."
He finally adds, continuing to muse on the time travel, a subject that's fascinated him since the experiment with the acorns: "If we have a potion of time travel, why couldn't we simply go back before the coffin was vandalized and complete the ritual then?"
"We were also attempting to bolster our strength a bit. Legends speak of an axe lost not too far from here, owned by a great warrior Kathok who had fought all number of demons and protected the lands many years ago. One of our number was killed by bears recently, and it made us realize how vulnerable we are. Demons being a lot stronger than bears, if the legends are true. When the fog started moving, I kind of lost track of our plans. I'm not sure what the right thing to do is now."

"Well, my experience with the potion of time travel has been that they will only send one person to the past when consumed. So, you'd need a lot of them if you're all going to go. Plus one for the actual ritual. That's not a bad idea, but you'd be going into things blind. Who knows if the potions would send you back far enough or if things would be even worse at the point it sends you," said Dan with a serious look on his face. "I'll ask again, what is your groups current plan to break this curse? You seem a bit uncertain."
"Our current plan has been to gather our strength, as I said we were hoping to find useful artifacts in the ruins of Ylourgne and somewhere in these mountains is an axe told to slay demons in a single hit, a gift to a man named Kathok from the god Kor. We also planned to talk to as many adventurers/Castle Refugees as possible to figure out the lay of the land and where they went wrong. Our plan got a bit curtailed when we had to save Vyones, and then Azedarc's inquisition jumped us after we left town. It also got a little curtailed when we came back from the past and our prime ex-adventurers lives had drastically changed."
Voulton laughs. "Uncertain is a good word for it. Nothing has been what it seemed since I got here, and most of the people haven't been open to questions and answers. I'm told that Moriamis offered answers, but only if Lynda would give her the Sword of Sylaire. An offer she refused. I've been doing my best to leave a written record in case we fail, so that others might have a chance. Our current plan had been to learn where others went wrong, assemble the artifacts, do what their letter says to do. "To those who would be free"? Only we'd have the advantage of foresight from having talked to the other groups. Since we've got no idea what it's like after assembling the artifacts, the later part of the plan is still rather rough."
I really hope the others chime in soon, Voulton thinks. This guy is going to think I'm an idiot.
