"Well, nothing of note here, let's continue on."

Kalar holds out his sword, using it to determine Bill's location. Once he has that, he'll go in that direction while using the sword to look for traps.

"This won't do at all! My hands are still bond in these cuffs. Take these off of me.," says Claire. She moves with Voulton as he turns to join the others. It was clear that she had no intentions of staying behind.

Kalar follows his sword down the hall and to the right. The hall lead to a big open room. Five large pillars can be seen in this room. Three skeletal guards in old looking plate armor and holding spears lay crumbled on the ground. Bill stands over the skeletons and turns to Kalar. Kalar could feel his hold over Bill the zombie manticore was complete once more. Old and flimsy looking doors could be found on every wall of this room. Further down the hall to the north, another strong brace door could be seen. The sword reported to Kalar that no traps were detected in the room.

Kalar orders three of his skeletons to head in and retrieve the spears. May as well have them armed with more than clubs.

While they are getting weapons, Kalar heads towards Bill, checking that his saddle and the gold are still in place. While he's at it, he looks around the room for any indication as to what it was used for, or any possible clues about the owner of the tower. He also continues to look for any live vermin or insects that he can capture.

When that's done, he'll check the door to the west, again making sure there are no traps while keeping the skeletons between himself and danger.

"Good day, fair lady" says Rob to the woman with a polite bow. "I am Robert Rottlerwits. Who do I have the honor of speaking to?"

"I am Claire de Alerouge, Duchess of House Alerouge of La Frenaie. Forgive my appearance, I have been being held captive for what must have been more than a month. Would you happen to have something else for me to wear?" Claire said after Rob introduced herself. Voulton had rejoined the others and followed them all into the large pillared room. Claire curtseyed to each member of the party, not including any of Kalar's undead minions which she avoided as best she could without standing too far from the party to seem rude.

Kalar found that Bill's sandle bags had indeed gone missing. A closer inspection of the room found that three gold coins were scattered near the door to the east of the room. As Kalar's skeletons armed themselves with the weapons of the fallen, Kalar made note of the total lack of vermin in the area. He thought back to the large pile of rations. "A pile that big should have attracted at least a few rats", Kalar thought. Looking at the pillars, Kalar could make out a creature he had heard of called a chimera, etched into the pillars along with a wonderful array of designs. The pillars seemed ancient, much like the spears and armor held by the skeletons. Some of the doors in this dungeon were clearly out of place. They looked very new and well kept while others seemed ready to fall apart. Kalar felt that this place must have more secrets to find then just the presence of Bill and possibly even beyond simply being the stronghold of Nathaire.

Most interesting...

"Right, heads up lads. This place is old, really old. And something's not right here. No rats, no spiders, nothing. You'd think there would be a bunch of them running around this place, but there's nothing."

Kalar orders one of his skeletons to open the door to the east before continuing.

"My gut, or whatever's left of them, tells me that we've stumbled onto more than just Nathaire's stronghold. There's definitely something else here, and I mean to find it and use it as a weapon against-- the ones who attacked us."

Kalar stops himself from saying "the Inquisition" just in time. He's not certain about Claire's allegiances and political sympathies, so it wouldn't do to announce to her that they're enemies of Azderac just yet.

While the skeleton is opening the door, Kalar retrieves a wand from his pack. He uses it to detect magic, moving in a circle while avoiding getting a false positive on the others. He then retrieves his skull of undead sight from his pack, and uses it in a similar manner to search for any undead while ordering his minions behind him to avoid any problems.

Kalar's skeleton opens the door to reveal a small library. Two large bookcases can be found here. At a glance, Kalar recognizes at least two of the books as spellbooks. Bill's saddle bags can be seen in the corner. Finally, there's a chest towards the south part of the room. The chest looks to be a strong metal braced chest. It seems locked. Kalar's sword detects no traps.

"Interesting."

Kalar orders his skeletons to retrieve the saddlebags and fasten them onto Bill. He then moves through the room, looking at the books but not touching any or reading any scrolls. He had a terrible enough experience with that before and has no intention of a repeat incident.

He orders one of his bloodhulks to open the chest, ripping apart the lock of need be.

"Pleased to make your acquaintance, Lady Claire, though it is a shame that it has to be in such unconvivial surroundings. House Alerouge you say? By any chance are you an acquaintance of my mother, Lady Nina Anne Bernard of the Vyones Bernards?"

Rob sizes her up and tries to guess her age.

As he is speaking, he removes his spare Scholar's outfit from his bag. It isn't as nice as some of his other spare clothes, but it is the only outfit he has that approaches being somewhat unisex.

The books in the room look to be necromantic in nature. Skulls, bones, and titles like "the dead man's journal" are some of the things Kalar sees as he browses the library. The bloodhulks crack open the chest after some effort. Inside, the party finds:
    a blue pair of slippers
    a green cloak
    a periapt
    a wand
    27 small onyxes
    3 large diamonds
    and an ornate golden chalice.

Claire answers Rob. "The Bernards," she says almost grimly. "I have heard of their reputation, but have never had the pleasure of meeting them. I never venture far from the house." Claire looks the suit Rob has provided her over. "This will do," she says. Then she looks around the room and sets off towards the door on the west wall. She quickly opens it and slips in. "No peeking," she says with a wink and closes the door behind herself.

Rob smiles broadly after the door closes. He could not agree more with Claire's dislike of House Bernard. There is no love lost between Rob and his late stepfather's house.

"Well, I think I'll get along just fine with Lady Claire" he declares to no-one in particular.

He still can't guess her age.

Excellent, goods that can be transformed into gold, which in turn will turn into magic items that will boost the party's survivability.

Kalar removes one of the pouches on his belt and passes it to a skeleton. He orders it to move all of the gems into the pouch and then return the pouch to him. While it's doing that, he orders another skeleton to lay the items down onto the ground in a row.

"Right, lads, I'm going to identify these. Make sure to not touch any until we're sure they're not cursed."

Kalar uses his sword to identify the items, making sure to keep well away in case something terrible happens. Once that is done, he'll order the skeletons to load the items into Bill's saddlebags. Distribution and allocation can come later when they're sure that things are safe.

He'll then use his wand again to search for anything on the shelves that might be magical in nature while keeping an eye out for any books that look to be specifically about animating undead.

Kalar identfied the items as:
    slippers of spider climb
    a charimatic cloak (+2)
    a periapt of wisdom (+4)
    a wand false life (46 charges)\
    ornate golden chalice not magical

Turning towards the books, Kalar can tell that twelve of them are magical.

Interesting.

Kalar directs his skeletons to the twelve magical books, ordering them to place the books inside Bill's saddlebags. They can be perused later. He also orders the skeletons to place the other items into the saddlebags as well, except for the periapt.

"Lynda, my dear. You might be interested in this periapt. If I've identified it correctly, then it should grant you some spellcasting ability. Not much, but certainly more than you're capable of now. And with the way things are going, we will need all the power we can get."

With that done, Kalar returns to the room with five pillars to check the room to the west, again checking for traps.
