Both Moriamis and Rob left Lynda to her own devices. Lynda, having been in a haze from Rob's wonderful storytelling, did not get to answer his question before he left. All dressed up, and nowhere to go really but wander around the library.

She decides to go around and chat with some of the locals. She'll talk about her condition and the ethereal plane. Perhaps try and learn more about the abandoned chateaus to see if they could possibly have any treasure in them. Perhaps even discuss magical items, seeing as she's accumulated a fair amount of them.

And so the party spent the day in the magical library.

Lynda talked to the scribes more, who were eager to hear about her "condition". The men she spoke told her she seemed to have two gifts. One was being ghost like and the other was being able to cross into the ethereal plane. Though similar, the men assure her they were not the same. Then they held a conversation amongst themselves about the possible effects travel to the ethereal plane could have in the kingdom, given it's planar misplacement. Lynda wasn't able to fully understand the conversation but she did grasp that it was possible her ghostlike nature was cause by her affinity to the ethereal plane and that she might continue to drift more towards that plane as time went on. As she processed the possibility of drifting into the ethereal plane the men asked, "Have you tried sending an animal into the mist while in the ethereal plane?" Of course, Lynda had not. The idea of possibly sending an animal to it's doom didn't sit well with Lynda and so she broke off her conversations with the men and went to research the nearby chateaus in some books she as directed towards.

Rachelle was overjoyed. She not only got a the full selling price of her armor that she thought might be too damaged but she also found an armorer willing to make her armor. She was even more overjoyed when she learned the modifications would be finish later that day. "The armor will cost twice as much, but I can even modify some of these magic ones if you have the coin." Rachelle thought this over and then placed her order. After making her decisions and shopping some more she went to the library to research the inquisition.

Rob had never seen a lizardfolk before and so when he past Rachelle in the shops he tried his best not to stare, thinking he might be being rude. Rachelle didn't take it that way. She had not thought much of Rob's casual glances towards her in the past. She would often find men staring at her body and largely ignored it. So when Rob turned away from her in what seemed to her to be disgust, she didn't expect it to hurt as much as it did. As he walked away without even a casual greeting, Rachelle could feel a deep rage building inside of her.
Rob continued past the lizardfolk and managed to find a shop selling a hat of disguise. After some smooth talking and some borderline male on male flirting, Rob managed to get the hat for only 1,000gp. Feeling very proud of himself, Rob continued to shop, charming himself along the way to a 20% discount and a 10% increase tot he sales price of the items he was looking to pawn off.

Voulton had come tot he library with a plan. So, when everyone began going off and doing their own thing, he headed straight for the books. He began studying the inquisition, their holy symbol, good ways to fight demons, and general knowledge of deities worshiped by people in Averoigne.

It had been a week since he left the library. Kalar had been spending his days, and nights, toiling away at his magic items. He had finished a few and had plans to make several others. He was staying the gruff farmer. The man didn't say much and Kalar wonder what kind of devotion this monk like farmer could possibly have to live such a life. The man didn't speak on the subject though so Kalar's questions remained unanswered on the subject.

The party was getting tired. They began slowly making their way towards the rooms Lynda and Rachelle had prepared for everyone. As they did, the weight of their researching efforts slowly sank in. Lynda had read about the chateaus and had also read up on other abandoned ruins in Averoigne that had been lost to time. The descriptions of these places were grim. Terrible traps and outlandish monsters seemed to populate these places. Though there did seem to be great treasures to be found in these places, most of the books seemed to imply the risk far too great. Reading up on specifically Malinbois, Lynda found details about a monster with magical powers and many eyes. It was called a beholder.
Rachelle and Voulton were both looking for the same book at one point. Rachelle, still fuming over Rob's behavior took Voulton's casual body language to have deeper meaning then it did. Letting her take the book first did little to quell her silent rage. Rachelle learned that Azedarc rose to power 30 years ago. In the book she was reading, one of the robed men had written about their theories of his sudden power gain. His thoughts were that Azedarc was using his magic to seek the help of demons to sway the minds of men and kill those who opposed him. A description of an icy spirit attacking one of the more out spoken opponents of Azedarc's added a great deal of evidence to the theories laid out in the book. Rachelle went on to read about the source of Azedarc's devotion.
Both Rachelle and Voulton had learned it at roughly the same time. Levistus was generally agreed upon as Azedarc's deity. The wooden holy symbols carried by inquisition roughly matched up with the dagger in a block of ice that served as the holy symbol of Prince Levistus. The icy demons seen doing Azedarc's dirty work also matched up with this theory. After reading this, Voulton doubled his efforts in learning how to fight demons. Cold iron weapons seemed to be a good start, but what seemed to be the best way were holy weapons. The books went on to describe the strength of the stronger demons. Voulton's hopes turned grim as some of the stronger demons, such as Balors, were described. Even with holy weapons, these monsters seemed to be almost impossible to defeat. Voulton was losing hope until he read a story about an ancient hero named Kathok. In the story, Kathok was gifted with a magical axe that could slay demons in a single stroke. Voulton's research into the axe ran into a dead end when the reports of it's location listed it as lost in the mountains to the north of Averoigne. The mountains were described as having hundreds of caves with the axe possibly being in any one of them.
Rob had spent the whole day charming the locals. At one point he found himself performing for several of the shop keepers at once. At the end of the day he had made 100gp through performing and haggling out deals between shopkeepers.

Twelve days had past, Kalar thought as he marked on his impromptu calendar. How long should he wait before going in after them he wondered. Kalar decided he should give it at least a few more days and went back to work on his magical creations.
He called out to Bill once more, as he had been doing every day. Bill remained trapped in what Kalar assumed was Nathaire's lair. Kalar thought of ways to magically learn more about Bill's current state so he could potentially help him without making such a long journey.

Not sure when the others will return, and with all of his gold spent on making magical items, Kalar wonders what to do.

After some consideration, he counts out what gold he has. 106 gold pieces. Not much to work with. Still, it might be useful, so he sets to work on a few meager items that might come handy.

Before he does though, he focuses on his holy symbol and Sends a message to Voulton:

"Am making magic items for everyone, but need more money. If others can spare, send gold to me. Will continue enchanting while others research."

Over the next three days, Kalar will make three of these, one for Voulton, Rachelle, and Lynda. Sorry, James, didn't have any more cash for a fourth one. Still, Rob has Stumpy, and can fare better at getting out of trouble than the others.

Stone of Undead Hiding

This tiny stone looks perfectly normal, except for a tiny etching on it. Each stone bears the name of a single individual and will only work for that individual. Once it is held inside a person's fist and focused on, it will hide that person from undead for 10 minutes. While the magic is active, undead cannot detect the person holding the stone using any means. If that individual touches any undead, the spell ends. Once used, all power fades from it and the item can no longer be used.

Spell Used: Hide from Undead
Spell Level: 1
Caster Level: Lowered to 1

Single use, use-activated: 1 (spell level) × 1 (caster level) × 50 gp = 50 gp
Require Class (Fighter, Barbarian, Ranger, one for each party member): 50 gp - 30% = 35 gp

Final Cost: 35 gp & 1 xp (1 day)
Total Cost: 105 gp & 3 xp (3 days)

Being from the third world, I reserve the right to speak in the third person.

Rob is pleased with his purchase of the Hat of Disguise. He also buys a heap of low-level spell scrolls.

He sells his Rapier of Summon Glockenspiel. It had been a good conversation piece, but a bad weapon, and he is delighted that he was able to get a more or less decent price for it.

He feels tempted to sell Stumpy's Halter of Horsespeak, but he remembers what happened last time he tried taking the halter away from the horse for a long period of time, and thinks better of it.

As he heads to bed, he takes note of the fact that nobody has said anything at all to him about Rachelle's funeral, and assumes that he must not be invited. First thing in the morning he will try to find Lynda at breakfast and borrow her magical glasses again so he can study his new scrolls.

I have no idea how long this stuff is going to take to do, so just assume I'm doing it and tell me when we've reached the end. Also forgive the liberties I've taken with the character of the smithy.

Voulton had wanted to know more about what he was up against, and now he knows. As an old friend once said, that's half the battle. There's another half to that battle, a very important half. But first, he needs money.

Entering the merchants quarter for the first time, he's more than happy to take their first offer of 500 gp for his Cloak of Resistance. The men who'd outfitted the expedition had said it would keep bad things from happening. Some help it turned out to be! He's also surprised to learn the value of the leather armor he'd taken off the werewolf. If they're willing to pay that much for a magic chunk of cowhide, they'll get no argument from him. While he's there, he'll pick up some professional wood-working tools too.

He can't stop thinking about Kathok and that axe. Taking some time off from shopping, Voulton looks up more about the man and his adventures. What had Kathok been like? How had he used his powers? Who'd gifted Kathok his legendary axe? A being who gives gifts like that could be a powerful ally!

At the conclusion of this reading, and hopped up on adventure, Voulton goes to the smithy with a gleam in his eye. He explains about the demons, the cold iron, and Kathok. He tells him about Rachelle and how easily the fearsome woodland creatures had torn her apart. "How can I keep that from happening to me"? The smithy takes out a wooden dowel and demonstrates a simple fact to Voulton with a few choice pokes:

"Son, that's a shiny piece of armor and a fine piece of metal, but it's the kind of thing you wear in a parade, or on guard duty."

TINK!

"Your breast is plated, sure."

POKE! POKE!

"But your arms, your legs!"

POKE!

"Your FACE for cryin out loud! You're not a turtle, son! You can't just tuck that stuff into your shell. It needs to be protected!"

He turns to a display showing off a shiny new suit of full-plate, still warm to the touch.

"Now pay attention, this is important."

TINK! TINK! TINK-TINK-TINKTINKTINK!

"Coverage! Total coverage! Can't chew through it! Bear takes one look at that and he starts lookin around for something easier to eat. Throw in a good shield and son, you'll be a very tough nut to crack."

The display makes a big impression on Voulton. He hesitates only slightly when it comes time to turn in the dark breastplate that's protected him these past few months. It's saved his skin more than a few times, but Voulton hopes to get home with more than just his torso left. The two quickly agree on a price. The smithy utilizes more of his good ol' boy charms, and pretty soon Voulton is handing over the money he just got and then some for an immaculate shield and the replacement full-plate.

As they begin taking the necessary measurements, the subject turns from defense to offense. The smithy affirms Voulton's suspicion that Holy Weapons are seldom worth the money or effort. Cold Iron's the way to go if demons are involved. He easily sells Voulton on a big battle-axe made of the stuff. It's then that the smithy asks a question that forever alters Voulton's life:

"Cold iron's good and all, but if you get into swingin range with a demon you're gonna regret it, no matter how much armor you're wearin. Say... you ever tried throwin' an axe?"

Voulton cannot believe the words coming out of the mans mouth. THROWING an axe? Unthinkable! Even after the man shows one to Voulton, even after he demonstrates by throwing a few one of them, Voulton cannot believe that such a thing is possible. The power of an axe blade with a graceful handle that makes it loop through the air... it's no wonder this is a library of forbidden arts.

Voulton refuses to even the touch the thing. The ensuing argument about what's more pathetic, a place without dogs for little people to ride on or a place where they don't make axes for throwing nearly destroys the budding relationship between the two hard-working men. It's only thanks to the experienced tact of the smithy, and his willingness to say anything to make the sale that saves the day:

"Y'know who liked to throw axes around? That there Kathok."

Voulton isn't used to these wily shop-keeper tricks and decides, reluctantly, that if it was good enough for Kathok he can at least give it a test throw. But only in the interests of being polite!

He ends up buying four of them.

At the conclusion of this business, receipt of the armor, etc. Voulton thanks the smithy and everyone else who helped his research and goes out to find Kalar. He's feeling better about their chances of survival, but he'd promised to make the then-halfling a mask and things seem to be pretty settled in here.

After talking to Lynda about the glasses, and sampling the local breakfast omelettes, Rob will take Stumpy and leave the library to hang out with Kalar for a while.

He won't bring up any mention of Rachelle's funeral, he senses that is a touchy subject for everybody.

If he sees that strange lizard-lady again, he is going to avoid her carefully. The angry way she was staring at him was kind of creeping him out.

Addendum to Voulton's actions:

If he gets Kalar's Sending before he leaves, he'll tell the others about it. If Rob leaves before he does, after getting the sending, he'll send money out with Rob. And finally

While looking up who gifted Kathok the axe, Voulton uses his experience from hunting the Sword of Sylaire. What's it look like? Did Kathok say anything when he used it? Can he bring along a picture so he'll know it when he sees it?

Lynda decides to sell off a few items.

Afterwards, she gives the money to Rob.

"You're visiting Kalar? Could you give this gold to him then. He's utterly obsessed with crafting, and he said in the past he was in need of gold. At least with this addiction we get something out of it, right?"

Lynda will then try and learn about the sword of Sylaire. In the past, she remembers Moriamis had asked about it. Perhaps Lynda will seek out Moriamis and let her know about the sword. She may be busy, but there's a good chance she'll drop whatever she does to investigate the sword, so long as she leaves it intact...

Lynda got up early. She wanted to talk to Moriamis and knew it would take a while. She met her in the library after almost no time looking. "I have the Sword of Sylaire if you would like to see it," Lynda said. Moriamis looked overjoyed as she cast several spells of divination on the sword. She then cast a spell that spawned a small book. "There, everything I need to know about the sword should be in this book. Unless you're willing to hand the sword over to me for a time." Lynda politely declined. "Then you can't see the book," Moriamis joked. Though said in a joking manner, Lynda was actually denied access to the book. She gave up and bid Moriamis farewell. As she left, she met with Rob who was getting an escort out of the library.

Watching Rob get ready to leave, Lynda decided she would leave too. The two met and Rob was able to borrow Lynda's glasses for his scrolls. He wore them as they sat eating breakfast waiting for the escort out of the cave maze to come and get them. Rachelle approached, freshly out of bed. "Good morning!" Lynda said. Seeing Rob avert his gaze caused Rachelle to simply respond with a growl as she walked past. "Must have had a rough night," Lynda presumed. Rob nodded his agreement as the escort showed up.

Rachelle was indeed dragging behind. Her anatomy had completely changed. Looking at what used to be her genitals, Rachelle wondered if she even needed to wear clothes anymore. "There's almost nothing to even cover up anymore," she said to herself. Thinking of this she remembered that she had business with the smithy. After talking with him she learned he would need a little more time so she ended up back in the library. She read up on the inquisition and their god more. One thing stood out to her. Of the three wizards they faced, one wielded lightning, one acid, and the other fire. Their god seemed to favor ice though. Rachelle wondered if the ice wielding inquisitors might be extra powerful because of this.

On another level of the library, Voulton was reading the three book epic of Kathok. Kathok seemed like a strong man. He took what he wanted and did as he pleased. None could stand against him for long. Voulton closely read the tale of Kathok slaying the giant ice beast the book described as a remoraz. The skittering serpent melted weapons as they touched him. In order to defeat the beast, Kathok called to his god in the heat of battle. The book said that Kor, Kathok's god, gifted Kathok's magic axe to him then. The axe cut through the beast without even heating up. Kathok then returned to the town that the beast was terrorizing. He asked for no reward, claiming Kor had provided him more of a reward then the people ever could. Kalar sent Voulton a message about needing more gold then that took Voulton's attention away formt he book. Voulton looked at the rest of the pages in the book. It seemed like hundreds. Not to mention the other two books. Voulton decided he might need to come back to these books later as he headed towards the smith. Voulton met Rachelle as they both picked up their gear from the smith. Then they met with the escort Rachelle had lined up ahead of time and left the library.

It had been three weeks since Kalar started living in this farm. He had made a number of magic items and was hoping Voulton would be bringing him gold at some point. Had something happened, he wondered. Lynda and Rob exited the cave that morning. They filled Kalar in on what had gone on in the library, which wasn't too much aside from their research. The group waited at the barn all that day. They prepared dinner and even ate with the gruff farmer, something Kalar, not one to eat meals, had not done in the long time he spent at the farm. It wasn't until last that night that Rachelle and Voulton joined the rest of the group at the farm. Rob, thinking at first he might have missed a good chance to better bond with Lynda as Voulton regrouped with the party looked over at Rachelle and asked, "Why is the lizard here?!"

Voulton is confused until he remembers that Rob wasn't there the first time and doesn't know. "The thing about Moriamis is that she's a great lady..." he lowers his voice conspiratorially, unsure where that pesky farmer is... "but when it comes to bringing things back from the dead, she still doesn't have the knack of it. Kalar used to be a couple feet taller before she poisoned him and brought him back to cure him from bein a werewolf."

He then pauses and considers Rachelle's new form. "I don't think bears like lizards though, so in time it may be a blessing."

"Moriamis has been of great assistance to us, but she's as fickle as a schoolgirl." Lynda says, irritated. "I showed her the sword, and she gathered a bunch of information on it, but since I wouldn't loan it to her, she wouldn't let me in on what she found. She leaves more to be asked than what she can answer."

"So, what now? We have leads and a fair amount of things to do. We've got abandoned chateaus crawling with awful monsters and treasures, the curse, and the looming threat of the men in white..."

"I was beginning to worry about you lot. Well, I've finished a few magic items. Here."

He hands Rachelle a silver stone.

"After what happened, I thought you should have this. Hold it in your hand, and say the word 'donarus'. Once, and only once, it will protect you from any attacks for a few seconds, enough time to get clear."

He hands Voulton a cloak and says:

"Here. Wear this cloak, and any who dare to raise a hand against you will suffer fear and doubt, making them that much easier to strike down."

He then hands Voulton, Rachelle, and Lynda a stone each.

"Unfortunately, I ran out of gold to fashion a fourth one, so you'll have to forgive me Rob. I know all of you are still wary of me, so I give these to you. Again, once and only once, you can hold these and focus on them. For ten minutes, undead will not be able to find you by any means as long as you hold onto that stone. If I ever go rogue, you can use these to get away. Either that, or to ambush and kill me. I hope that does something to alleviate some of your fears."

Kalar looks at the gold gathered and says:

"With this amount, I can craft various items for each of you. I have an idea about what to make for each of you, but I'm afraid it will take some time. You're welcome to wait here, of course, but I would suggest returning to the library for a day or so to research more about the forces arrayed against us."

Kalar listens to Lynda's words and says:

"That is an excellent point. However, if we want to set out with these magic items ready, I'm afraid that it will take me at least another three weeks or so to finish working on them. If you stay in the library though, you will only need to wait at most a day or so while I stay out here and work on them. I believe that would be the best course of action. We've already been gone for around three weeks, so it's safe to assume that the hunt for us will have died down a bit. If we give it another three weeks, we should theoretically be able to travel relatively safely.

"Even if you do mean to set out right now though, that might not be possible, as the bears have killed off our horses. I could, of course, have my bloodhulks draw the wagon. That would certainly allow us to go faster, but it would also make us that much more suspicious.

"The plan I propose is this. Voulton and I will stay out here. I will continue working on the items, while Voulton works on the wagon, adding defensive measures to it and perhaps some means of attacking. The rest of you return to the library and wait for a day or two. Try to find out as much as you can about all of the different chateaus as well as all of the different locations to the north. As soon as Voulton and I are finished, I will perform a Sending to Rob, alerting you that we are ready to go. Once that is done, purchase some horses, and we will head on out. We'll make for Nathaire's stronghold, so see if you can get an exact location from Moriamis. After that, we'll continue to head north for the mountains. There, we should be far enough away from the Inquisition at Ximes and Vyones to plan our next course of action.

"What say the rest of you?"

Voulton puts on the cloak as he formulates his response. It fits great... maybe too great! Had Kalar sized him up for it while he was in his head earlier? Either way he did a great job. Voulton stuffs the stone into a convenient pocket. He's confused at the gesture, but appreciative all the same.

"It sounds like a great plan to me. That wagon's been needing an upgrade for a long time, and given the time and the wood I think I can widen it out, sturdy up the axles and the wheels, maybe even add an enclosure to keep arrows and rain off. That's noisy work though. Might not be worth the attention out here in the "middle of nowhere"."

"While we're up north, I'd like to try to find something I read about. Apparently the Sword of Sylaire isn't the only weapon of note in this land. In ancient times, a village was troubled by a remoraz. I've never heard of them, but the book described it as a giant beast of ice who could somehow also become hot enough to melt any weapon that touched it! A hero named Kathok faced the beast. In the heat of battle, Kathok prayed to his God Kor and his faith was rewarded with an axe of tremendous power that cut through the remoraz like a shovel through a worm. I was only able to skim the rest but even in what little I saw, the axe was always mentioned a smiting even the most powerful of demons in a single stroke."

"I wasn't able to find out what happened to Kathok, but his axe apparently is still somewhere in the cavernous mountains up north. It's a long shot, but while we're there it'd be worth a try."

He then shows Kalar the religious symbol, unsure whether or not he'd already known: "We also found out that these belong to Levistus. The more traditional depiction is of a dagger in a block of ice. It's said that Azedarc himself is among his worshippers and the historical record speaks of icy servants doing his dirty work. Frozen monsters melting through swords, daggers stuck in ice, servants of cold. A lot of ice in this place's history.""

He shakes his head, unable to make any connections. "I feel like I understand this as much as I ever will. This is a great opportunity though and we shouldn't squander it. So long as Moriamis will have us, we should research what we're up against and make sure we're prepared. Bears aren't the most dangerous things roaming the countryside."

"Ah, that is indeed most interesting."

He takes a look at the symbol (but doesn't touch it, just in case) that Voulton shows him.

"If Azderac is indeed an agent of Levistus, then that could be rather dangerous. I'm an agent of my deity, and I can say that mine is no friend to Levistus. They are not enemies either, but I do have the leave of my deity to go up against this foe."

Kalar considers the matter of the axe for a while before saying,

"If the axe is indeed still in those mountains, then we would be foolish to not make an attempt to retrieve it. As soon as we have finished with Nathaire's stronghold, let's make for that axe. I have seen you handle that axe of yours, I am certain it will be a formidable weapon in your hands."

He turns to the rest of the party and then says:

"Are we decided then? I shall remain here to fashion more items for everyone, while the rest of you continue to research further. Considering the run-in with the bears, it might also be a good idea to try to find out what other monsters we may encounter further north."

Kalar thinks for a while and then says:

"Might also be a good idea to learn what the climate is like there. Who knows? We might be heading towards ice-capped mountains or maybe a scorching desert. Being prepared will spare us any heartache later on."

Rob apologizes to Rachelle

"I am so very sorry! My behavior was inexcusable. I thought you were dead, and I had no idea about your transformation. What an ass I have been!"

He doesn't stand too close while delivering this apology, nor does he give her the hug she would have received had she been brought back in her original form.

"Those teeth and scales look impressive! Perhaps they will be an asset in battle!"

Rob thinks for a moment, and the cautiously offers; 'If you want to look like your old self again, I could give you my Hat Of Disguise"
