Castle Amber: A D&D Adventure

Rachelle goes back to the green room, intent on looking at what's in the door on the far side. She has no desire to see why Lynda went back to the chapel, nor what Kalar intends to do with all his newfound undead.

Lynda turns to Simon, and looks at him with all the malice and fury she can muster.

"Listen here, Simon. You're crazy sister, Madeline, just burst into here and pretty much murdered Charles. You know it yourself, she was dead, but now she's not. She was buried and everything. I tried to separate them, but it's no use. She's just going to murder your brother endlessly. As for you? Tell me Simon. Tell me where we are right now. If your answer to that is "Hell, little girl!", then don't waste your breath, because I know damn well otherwise. Then you'll fight me, and you'll use a lot of magic. You'll shatter that figure on the alter, and the wall will explode open. I've done all this before, and you know yourself that's how it's gonna play out. This damn chapel is in a loop. Now you can either fight me, or we can talk this through."

"Well that's two questions, but since you stated the terms and not I, I'll answer them. King Stephen had been poisoned by someone in his family. Before he died he made a deal with a devil to get back at his family for what they had done. The devil was beyond Stephen's understanding though. Stephen had reached out for the most powerful devil he could call and had called upon one of the lords of the nine hells. Instead of a simple curse of death or plague, the castle as well as the whole kingdom was cursed. As for where the silver gate leads, the silver gate is the only safe exist from the castle. It was made by someone long ago in an attempt to break this curse. It leads to the kingdom of Averoigne." With that, the skeleton gives a bow and leaves.

Lynda's speech seems to fall on deaf ears. Simon takes out a sword and stabs Lynda with it.


Meanwhile, Rachelle opens the other door in the green room. A snow-white carpet covers the floor of this room. The walls and ceiling are ivory colored. You can smell the incense (jasmine, ginseng and mandrake root). The white colored furniture in the room is covered with a layer of frost. The temperature in the room is freezing. A giant, white, six-legged lizard stares at Rachelle.


Lynda takes 5 dmg.

"Dammit!" Lynda shouts.

She runs back out to the main chapel.

"Kalar, our friend Simon is back and he's angry as ever. I also would like to say we have all the keys to the silver gate. Shall we take for it?"

Kalar looks back to where Lynda came from, and decides that retreat would certainly be the most viable option right now.

"Everyone! Down the ladder! Hrulgin, lead the way. Lynda and I will go next, then all of the undead. Let's go!"

After leaving the room with the Green Knight, Tammytharn had not followed any of the others. She had returned to tell Galse that Lynda had found the last of the four keys.

"I am SURE as soon as they all get back here, we can go unlock the door."

She says happily.

And then she went back to reading her warforged tome. This seemed like as good a time as any to case Read Magic and see if it helps her understand it better.

Rachelle bows down at the lizard. "What are you guarding?" she asked it, hoping it is of a similar temperament as the other guardians.

The letters dance as Tammytharn reads the tome with increased finesse. She can understand every word. The tome is long though and it will take her quite a while to read it all. She gets to work.

The horrible lizard attacks Rachelle ruthlessly. It wields a large frosty polearm and strikes at Rachelle with both grace and power. The polearm slices coldly into Rachelle's flesh.

Simon follows right behind Lynda as she flees. He manages to stab her two more times before Lynda gains a bit of distance on him and runs out the hallway door and into the chapel. Simon enters the chapel and sees Kalar and his skeletal minions. Simon reaches for his unholy symbol and begins chanting.

Lynda takes a total of 13 dmg
Rachelle takes 9 dmg. (3 of it ice dmg)

"Blast it!"

Kalar starts sending his skeletons down the hole after Lynda. In turn, he reaches for his holy symbol and starts bolstering the undead against any attempts at destroying them.

"Hrulgin! Get down that hole! Ghouls! Attack the cleric!"

A polearm? Where did that come from? Rachelle wills herself into a rage, and runs the hell out of the room, attacks of opportunity be damned.

The ghouls and 2 skeletons stop. 3 of the ghouls turn towards Kalar ready to attack. "You fool! You think you can attack me with undead? Do you even know who I am?!" Simon points and the ghouls pounce. Kalar manages to deflect their attacks but just barely. Lynda goes down the hole created by Kalar's spell and grabs on to the ladder. The skeleton below her has stopped climbing down though and just clings in place, looking up in awe. Hrulgin continues climbing down and only one skeleton is on the ladder with Lynda.

Meanwhile, Rachelle retreats and finds that the salamander is not giving chase. Instead, when Rachelle peaks back, she sees the lizard closing the door.

Not good, this is not good... Kalar backs carefully towards the hole, and then jumps in. As he does though, he takes hold of his token of featherfall and activates it.

"Lynda! Go limp!" He makes sure that when he runs into Lynda he'll grab her so that she will float to the ground safely as well.

Kalar leaps into the hole and grabs Lynda as he does. Lynda gets knocked around a bit and then, they were both floating slowly down to the ground. Up above, Kalars remaining active skeletons fought to block the ghouls from the hole. As Kalar and Lynda reached the bottom, a ghoul burst through and smashed to the ground. Hrulgin joined up with Kalar and Lynda and headed into the warforged room, closing doors behind themselves.

Tammytharn and Galse are both interrupted as Lynda and Kalar burst in with Hrulgin right behind them. Then Rachelle joins them shortly after. The energy in the room goes from serene to panic in seconds.

Blast it all! And he'd just gotten that little army together! And now they've been destroyed! Add to that, the fact that he nearly died to get the gold for the sword, turned into a werewolf for the same, lost access to his magic... And now this! Of all the damned things that could have happened, all this! And for absolutely nothing! And--


Deep breath...

This was all a calculated risk, and it didn't play out. Nothing more. There will be opportunities to get more minions later, but for now, at least the core group is safe. The ghouls are a regretful loss, but they can be replaced.

"Right lads, emergency time. There is a potentially powerful cleric up there ready to kill us." he deliberately leaves out Lynda's part in it. The party has enough to deal with without pointing fingers. "He managed to take control of my minions, and he might be headed down here now. Get ready for battle."
