Pre-Signup for 2015's OHRRPGCE RANDOM COLLAB CONTEST

So, it's not 2015 but Marion's post about wanting a colab partner sparked me to start posting, plus HotOhr 3 is finally over.

So, this year (err... next year) I'm going to require a entry fee in order to enter. This is not to make me money. The entry fee will be for 3 reasons. 1, the entry fees will act as a prize with the first place team receiving all the entry fees. 2, it will help weed out the developers that are only mildly interested in entering a contest. This should help with people getting partners that don't know much about game development. 3, the entry fee should help people feel more invested in the contest so developers will be less likely to flake out and disappear for the entire contest, if not longer.

The contest is currently scheduled to start on February 1st 2015. Official sign up will start on January 1st 2015. The entry fee is currently planned to be 5 dollars per person. However, I'm open to lowering it (or increasing it) depending on responses to this thread.

The idea of charging is a pretty good idea, but won't it cause an even smaller turnout than this year?

(Also, I was planning on entering, but I don't think I will if I have to pay.)

Maybe you could make entering free, but a bugfix/feature request could cost $5?

Edit: Wait. You aren't talking about HotOHR, are you?

If there's enough interest, I will gladly run a free equivalent to this shameful shim-sham of a contest. Though I should warn you, you might not like how I do things!

And Mystic, EVERY contest is a potential non-random collab contest! The only contest I can think of that bans collabing is the 48 hours contest, and that's only because it's meant as a single man test of endurance. You're always able to hook it up with someone and make a game together. It's a free country, man!

Sure, but few contests require it, right?

First, this thread is the thread where I'm seeing how much interest there would be in doing things with an entry fee. Any question about the turnout of such a contest or the validity of such a contest are good questions, but as this is the thread where I'm gathering that info I have no way of answering these types of questions.

@TACOBOT: This is not for the Hot Ohr contest. I don't host that. This is the random colab contest. The random colab contest is a contest that you sign up for and get randomly paired with another developer that entered and the two of you make a game together in about half a month's time.

@Master K: I'd prefer to deal with the money through paypal, but will try to work with people without credit cards or otherwise no access to paypal as best I can. ALTERNATELY! I've been thinking of allowing participants to simply come up with a prize to award the winning team that would roughly be of the entry fee's value. My only problem with doing things this way is that in the past people have failed to deliver these types of things.

@Mystic: Basically what Giz said. Pairing up with someone you wouldn't normally pair up with is the whole point of this contest.

@Giz: I love you too Giz. I'll just mark this down as a vote against the entry fee.

I think that requiring some concrete up front commitment is a good idea. However transferring/collecting money could easily be problematic and turn people away. Maybe something else can be thought of. E.g. people have to donate something to the prize pool, NOT just a promise to do something like draw fan art after the contest*. A photo of the physical item they will post, or proof of a steam gift code, would be acceptable.

* oh SLIME I think I owe fanart to someone for some contest, but I haven't the foggiest idea what it was

Really? I entered at least 2 48 hour contests with someone else. I don't think there was such a rule most years.

Oh, and I'll be joining; Feb 1st should be totally free for me.

I would have an interest in this, and a $5 fee isn't a dealbreaker, or even much of an issue for me. My main concern would be for the poor, unfortunate soul who got randomly paired with me! Hurr

@Wobbller: Fine... I'll fix it you... Nazi.

@Tmc: Yea, I think I'll come up with a list of entry fee alternatives. I'm also thin king of reducing the fee to either $2 or $1, depending on the nature of the alternatives I come up with.

@Urkel: I'm sure you'll make some young blushing OHR'er very happy.

Too bad, I could have ended up collocating labs with Wobbler.

You're fine, Urkelbot; you've got some stuff to show. Previous years, we had a rule that to join you had to at least have released a game to prove that you wouldn't be totally helpless. Spoonweaver told me in IRC he wasn't planning on having that this year.

This seems a good contest indeed, i'm going to join as soon as possible and probably going to add something OHR related as a prize. Probably a commemorative sculpture or a gadget.
