Devil HALLOWEEN TIME IS HERE!! Devil
Devil Devil Devil Devil Devil Devil Devil Devil Devil

And that can only mean one thing! Halloween Contest! Not that it's gonna be much of a contest without prizes, but that's never stopped us before!

Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk
Gonk THE RULES ARE SIMPLE! Gonk
Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk Gonk

1. Ideally, you'll start on your game October 1st, and have it finished and announced in this thread by November 2nd. You get an extra day so you can actually enjoy Halloween. Games that were started early are allowed to enter, but it'll be up to the judges to decide how much of an advantage that gave and how many points will be fair to deduct.

2. The perfect Halloween Game would be scary, original, and fun. All entrants will be judged in these three categories. Whether or not scary refers to actual terror, jump scares, or spooky pumpkin atmosphere will be up to the judges.

3. Anyone on this forum is elligible to judge. At minimum, a vote should consist of "I think this game was the scariest, then that game, then that other game..." and so on until all games have been ranked. A list format is allowable. You can issue points if you want, but for the sake of judging only their respective rankings will be taken in to account. Ideally, a judge would also be able to explain why they felt one game is scarier than another, more original, funner, whatever, but it's not ultimately necessary. By the end of the contest, we should be able to agree who the winner for each category was. Ties are controversial, controversy is fun, so ties will be permitted.

4. Let no entrant of the contest expect a prize. There are no prizes. Only the thrill of competition, the spirit of the season, and chasing the elusive white whale that is a legitimately terrifying game.

5. I might enter, I might not. I'm not working on anything, I don't have any particularly good ideas, and I'm semi retired. However, I will reserve the right to make a game. It'll be up to the judges to decide how much of an advantage doing the contest is, and penalize me accordingly.

Now wait a minute, I can't think of any Haloween Contest games that were scary. I had always thought that the goal was always to create a Haloween-themed game. Sometimes that can mean a spooky atmosphere.

My intention was always to get scary games out of it. As far as I can remember, I've always included scariness in the judging for that reason. In practice, we do tend to get Halloween-themed, spooky-fun stuff and that's great, I have no problem with it. I just always wanted somethin scarier.

There were a few games that got kinda close to scary over the years. There was that "THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE" or whatever with the spooky school shooting tones, and that Spoony/MasterK thing a while back, can't remember if it was Halloween or not but at least it had some jump scare quality to it.

Traditionally, this contest has been OHR only, but I wouldn't be opposed if other entries were allowed Surprised

I'd never ask someone to download and run a strange program just because some idiot on a forum swears that it's a game and not a botnet. I'm sure there's shit someone could do to an RPG file, but I honestly feel safer with an OHR Game than some random executable. For that reason, I'd like to keep the contest to just OHR Games. I've never seen a non-OHR Game entered into a contest anyway, so there's that. You want to talk about non OHR horror games, or post it here, I'm okay with that. But I'm not going to make it mandatory for people to play and judge.

I like the palette and low-contrast, soft floor tiles. I think that's going to loop really nice.

Ah, I forgot about all of those games. I guess there are also a few others that did decently at creating a spooky atmosphere, like Pitch Black 1/2 and Project `C'. EDIT: And ESPECIALLY Vampire's Curse.

Well I think the contest has usually been called the OHR Halloween 20XX contest in past? Lately there's more of use of other engines around here.

I'm actually entering another Halloween contest at the moment, and I'm using Twine to make that game. Could I enter it here? It would be exported as html, so you wouldn't have to download any scary files. Smile

It's okay, I'm still trying to figure out how to put pygame stuff into an exe. But if you want no non-ohr, then fine, I'll make my own game, with blackjack, and pumpkins!

I'd love to see what you guys can do, but I feel weird about opening the door to everything. There was that one Haunted Majora's Mask thing years ago that had you download a program to see the ending that turned out to be a kind of semi-virus that continued to "haunt" you. I'm sure a lot of people liked that, and if you're that kind of people or that kind of game, I'm not saying you're wrong. I feel like limiting it to OHR keeps things semi-contained and safe, and I like to keep that kind of boundary between me and my spooky.

Tacobot, Meowskivich, even if your Twine and Pygame projects are not eligible for this contest, you should still share them on the game list. I am curious to see them.

I don't think I will be entering a game, but I do look forward to playing the entries and being TERROR-FRIED

Can I take someone else's game and replace the graphics with pumpkins and farts? If not then my Artistic Vision is being assaulted.
