OOOOkaay, I just spent about an hour completely redrawing, then adding finishing touches onto the walkabouts. I think I achieved more of that 2.5D look I was going for. Thanks for the suggestion. The only part I'm not too sure about are the arms, but I can tweak those later since I think I have the basics there.I had to do a pixel offset of down about 5 on the town map, and then made copies of the top 5 pixels of roof tile so his feet weren't sticking through when he walked behind a house. I probably need to rework the inside a bit so it doesn't look like he's floating on the wall when he's against it. There's also the sideways door issue.

That's a good idea. Do you think I should also do a pixel offset for indoors, or should I just split that particular door tile between two tiles and add an extra door? I actually opened up
Wandering Hamster to get a better idea of how to make the road where the character would actually be on it. I had to make a few extra tiles using the top 5 from the house for the third layer so his feet wouldn't stick through the bottom of the overhead, but I was happy with the result because it looked more like that 2.5D and he now walks on the upper part of the road. My worry about doing it on the inside is having to reposition all the tiles. The outdoors are in their infancy, the indoors are pretty much complete except for the possibility of a hidden basement and a bedroom.

Regarding your pixel offset indoors, and outdoors... I think you shouldn't make the pixel offset "down 5 pixels" but instead you should make it "up 5 (or more) pixels." Doing so would resolve your problem of you having to draw copies of the top 5 pixels of roof tile so his feet don't stick through. Instead you would just make the top roof tiles on a higher layer, then the characters head should peek above the roof appearing like he's in behind the house.
This offset would also resolve your problem indoors because it would simply make the hero look like part of his head overlapped the wall, but his feet would remain on the floor.
Hope that helps. I like where you style is going now. The new character perspective fits well with the surroundings. Also I see nothing to complain about with that dirt path,... it's a nice path!
If I may also suggest, you should make some variations of the "tuft of grass tile." Make one that has a little less grass, and another that has a little more grass. This way when you scatter grass tuft tiles around your map, it will look more natural, and less repetitive.

Thanks. I plan to implement some of these tweaks in the future as it goes along. I really wanted to add more onto the game for the moment because I feel that's where I usually get stuck at and last night when I worked on it for 5 hours I had a bunch of ideas popping into my head. I'm definitely going to give the up pixel a shot, if not on this map on the next. The layers are still a tad confusing to me, though I think I'm starting to get the hang of them.
I just uploaded the new demo if you want to take a closer look.

Cool. I just tried the game, and it's very good. The storyline is engaging, and nothing in the game seems redundant. I'd say you're on the right track. The wizard character is very relatable... I've done many a shrooms in my day, and burnt a few down while I was at it. Can't say I ever felt the need to drink beer while on shrooms. In fact I can't say I've ever had the feeling that I need to consume anything while tripping. One time I took a handful while I was already drinking at this dance thing at my university, it was a pretty strange in comparison to a normal trip. All the colours in the room were uncontrollably swirling together, and images were burnt in to my retinas from the entire night. It wasn't a bad trip though. My friend on the other hand left about 20 minutes after the stuff kicked in, and went home (only 4 blocks away). The next day he told me he somehow got mixed up on the way home and thought the trees were bending down to grab at him. He ended up running around in a nightmarish bad trip for a few hours while trying to figure out where his house was. I also had a weird experience where I saw myself in 3rd person for a brief period of time... never had that happen since, it was f***ed. Don't mix alcohol and shrooms.
But yeah enough of that, the game is good. Looking forward to more. Gotta' love Dune too!

Appreciate it man. Lol, I've had some interesting times with them too. I stopped in June of 2013 because I got busted with around 6-8 grams of penis envy shrooms, a dime bag, and a pipe. After a year of continuances, my lawyer worked out a deal and as of Monday I'm on 36 months probation with the conviction on hold unless I screw up and violate the terms. Never mixed with beer except once right after the comedown and things were still moving a bit. I remember one time thinking my soul was leaking through my stomach. I'm saving money and at the end of the three years I'm taking a road trip to Colorado. In the meantime, gonna attempt to get into college.
I guess the substances in the game are kind of a vicarious thing, well, the natural ones, anyway. Some of the enemies are gonna have the bad drugs, like the tweakers along the forest road I just added. I'm gonna try to make it as challenging as possible as well without being impossible to beat. The wizard will join the party in the next update so it doesn't get too overwhelming. I'm trying to come up with a character to live in the third house that he can go visit while Rex sobers up. Maybe a girlfriend that he goes into her bedroom and it says "8 hours later".

That sucks about the conviction, but the road trip and schooling will be well worth it.
The next character idea sounds good for revolving jokes around.
I too was thinking of having some natural hallucinogens in my game. Though I plan to make them so when my characters take them, they will effect things in the game like: increase the probability of special events, change colors of stuff, make hallucinated characters appear that can help/harm you, and also use it as a puzzle solving mechanism in which you take drugs to make new paths open... etc.

That's a really good idea. You gonna use a swap palette plotscript? I was thinking I would have them more as power ups, for instance a joint increasing will, etc. The main idea I had in mind was Ayahuasca awakening James' magical abilities, and then maybe mushrooms and acid (man made, but still widely considered an entheogen) teaching white and black magic spells, but mostly I figured get the wizard's mind altered every chance I get, lol.

I was thinking I'd somehow try to pull off the colour change code by making an "eachstep" script, so that every time my character takes a step the screens color slightly changes. To change the colour I think there's an RGB() command I can use to slowly modify the colours. Or now that I think of it, I may be able to make the screen colour change constantly without even moving my character by using a while-loop with a wait function (so it doesn't cause an infinite-loop), though this could interfere with some other code I have going on, so it will require testing.
I like the idea of making Ayahuasca give abilities to your character, and I have no problem with man-made drugs. I just try to stay away from the hard-drugs, once is more than enough for any of those I'd say.

Thanks. And which game are you thinking of doing this on? Is it available for download here? I think the changing without moving would be more realistic, but both are good ideas.

It'll be for my current game "Sunken" (name subject to change). I have not got to a point in development where I feel like I could release a demo. And I'll definitely go for the colour change without moving if I can pull it off.

Let me know when you've got it uploaded. I'd certainly like to try it. I actually checked on your website and I have to ask, did you draw the Pokmon psychedelic posters? Those are great.

Oh yeah, that's my old art portfolio. I have a bunch of fan-art and mashups like those which I sell through a site called redbubble. Those pokemon psychedelic ones actually do surprisingly well. The Pikachu bong one sells like crazy. I think I've sold 100 shirts of it alone, not to mention countless stickers, posters, and other merch. I hope to one day bump in to someone wearing one of those shirts on the street... I think that would be awesome!
My sites kind of under repair so it's a bit messy. I was thinking of moving my site over to tumblr for sake of easy use, but I haven't had the time to set it all up.
