To add some incentive to the prize, if it's alright by Pepsi, let's put one of the Mouse Pads we're working on up in the prize pot? All places get one, courtesy of Red Triangle Games. So hey, if there's 3 entrants, then everyone wins a $10 dollar value prize.

Thanks. I've updated the original post to reflect this new prize (I lumped it in with some of the other swag prizes).

Could you please edit your first post of this threat to say what games actually are entered and links to them please? I know I entered Batman & Robin, with the update from August 31st.

I usually let the HeartBug update wizard (James) modify the contest page to reflect which games have been released so far, and it looks like he's been keeping up-to-date:

http://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/Heart_of_the_OHR_2014

Though, on closer inspection, it does seem he has confused the contest page with the HeartBugs page and vice versa.

James, if you're reading, here is the HeartBugs page:

http://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/User:Bob_the_Hamster/HeartBugs_2014

Both pages, as you can see, are showing a general lack of turnout compared to the last two Heart of the OHR contests.

For those who still want a reference to what has been released so far, that I'm certain fit the guidelines and/or have been actively entered by their authors, here is a working list:

New Games:

Troll Over (Spoonweaver): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=6196

Rereleased Games:

Batman & Robin (RedMaverickZero): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=3719

OHR Legends:

Okedoke: La Leyenda Mexicana (FnrrfYgmSchnish): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=2716

And that's it!!!

Now, there could be more, but I have my doubts...

___________________

These are the RPGs that have been added or updated since June 1 that I have no information about regarding length, eligibility, or intention to enter, and thus can't yet claim they are part of the contest:

Tentative but Unconfirmed Releases:

Stone Wings (pjfamicom): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=5623

-I think this game was actually released before the contest window but had an edited post reflecting a later time. I'm really not sure where it stands honestly. I hope it fits because it seems like a solid contender. Either way, I need more information before I can determine its eligibility.

Elephants Most Wanted (Taco Bot): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=5623

-My feeling is that this is probably a tech demo more than anything and probably doesn't meet the length requirement. I'll need someone to confirm its estimated game time, preferably its author.

Dragons! (Guroo): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=6243

-I know nothing about this author, his intentions on entering the contest, or why he's chosen to link an installer version of the game to an offsite download. I hope it's a legitimate game.

James Doppler's Epic Sci-Fi Fantasy Quest of Space Time Adventure for the Mind (JimLuc T. Kirkard): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=6233

-By the author's admission on the description page, this game is too short to meet the length requirement. However, I think it will be worth seeing if he can get the length up to 30 minutes or more in time for the contest window's closing.

Stand (kylecrack): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=6268

-I know nothing about this game; I'm not even sure if it's an RPG. I just know that the author says he's working on a battle system, and that he hopes to have something better than a tech demo "in a few weeks" as of early September.

pH (Taco Bot): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=6335

-This is supposedly a "demo of a demo," which tells me it isn't much of anything yet. Certainly doesn't seem to meet the length requirement.

The Pumpkin Warriors (Froginator): http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewgame.php?t=6306

-Looks like this could become something (and may already be something) by the close of the contest, but like everything else on this list, I have no idea what to actually expect from it, or if it's eligible.

And that's everything. If it was released since June 1 but isn't on this list, it's not an RPG.

Note: I checked Castle Paradox for new games that might've ninja'd into the window, but nothing new since June that hasn't already been released here.

My games:

Elephants Most Wanted: The gameplay of that is about 0. It was basically me figuring out how to use the OHRRPGCE. Not much else to say about that.

pH: Yeesh, just started this a week ago. I think I'll enter it in the next HotOHR. Sorry guys.

Wow, only three entries?

I don't know if I can get my game ready by Nov. 30th. I have...SOME things done with it. I work on it sporadically. School has kicked in and takes my attention, along with other hobbies.

(Troll Over is also last place by default)

Don't forget that you effectively have until the 14th (or 15th?)

It might be a good idea to loosen the rules and allow initial entries between the 1st and 15th of December rather than just bugfixes? If there are a lot of people who could almost make the deadline then that's a more compelling case for leniency, otherwise it's just a waste of time to extend deadlines. So it would be good to hear updates from people.

Harpy game's technically eligible already, but I'd rather wait to see if I can get some other things I can finish up before the deadline [like the intro, or a second dungeon that actually has enemies/shops/bosses in it.

Yeah, my last few posts have been subtly implying this. For those who need me to shout it: You can turn your games in as late as December 14 and still be eligible for the contest (you just won't get your bug bounty from James if you release after November 30). So far, this year's contest has been grossly underwhelming compared to the last two (by this time in 2012, the contest thread was twice as long with activity as it is now, and this year's thread is marred by at least one page of nonsense thanks to my first post messing up initially). I'm trying to encourage everyone to get a bit more fired up about their games and the contest to keep the spark lit. Otherwise we're gonna encounter the very same reason why I was reluctant to commit this to a biannual event in the first place.

Needless to say, Heart of the OHR will continue in the years to come if and only if people continue to participate. We'll definitely have it in 2016, but this year's turnout combined with 2016's turnout will directly influence whether we have it in 2018. With as broad of an open window as I give this thing each year, and given the fact that everyone is armed with the knowledge that they can bring any RPG project into the competition regardless of how long they've been working on it, I'd find it extremely discouraging if we ended up with just three games, especially when the last two had 12 and 15 entries respectively.

Master K wrote:

Technically two. Okedoke is a Legends release, which is a prestige entry and not part of the traditional vote.

Guys, let's not kill the Heart of the OHR so soon after we had agreed to keep it going every two years. We all have other things to do, but most of us also have at least 15 minutes a day to work on something.

Maybe it's time we started talking about our entries, posting pictures, etc., and not just simply end at the announcement stage. That's the one thing that really helped in years past that NO ONE has been doing this year. Even when I try to spur you guys into discussion, you aren't talking. It's like you're not actually working on anything. Start talking about your projects here, get the community's interest in them flowing. You don't feed the competition, and suddenly it's vogue to drop out. Come on, guys, light a dang spark. Start talking more about your games here. Don't just say you plan to enter or plan to drop out. Post screenshots. Talk about what you've already done. Get us hyped for December.

Then deliver.

I will say this about this contest, a couple different people have encouraged me to sway from the plans to release Mr. Triangle's Adventure as a 100% release and instead make a really huge demo for this contest. Hopefully enough people play the games this year and get inspired to want to make games of their own. I think we should try to make an official Heart of the OHR webpage next year and just refer to it here so we can list the rules and prizes and just make things look more appealing. It is a bit much to take in all at once for anyone interested, so at least this would possibly make it more accessible. Hell, if you bug me early enough, I'll set it up and even post it on my site if you want.

I don't like talking because that's what kills me, but I'll start spouting off some stuff. It may be really late in the game, but it's something.

My project that might get demo released is called "Elanor", after the main character. I have a lot on paper planned for this game, including a world map. I've been able to make some maps, draw up several enemy and boss sprites, and write some dialogue. A lot of the sprites I put up, including the ones in the artbook, are featured in this game. I have a rough, loose idea for a plot, but I do have an idea of area progression.

The game features two spellcasting main heroes at the moment. I feel content with both my heroes being magic users, and I plan to have a sort of system where your main hero, Elanor, follows a god, and all the spells she learns revolves around the chosen god, whereas the witch can learn spells based off the bosses you defeat, making her a little more versatile perhaps. You can create items based off the bosses you defeat, be it an equipment piece, a staff or wand, or a spell.

Other than that, there isn't much beyond that. I'm sure if I got off my lazy butt I could have a demo out by the deadline. Life has been busy, and I've also had many distractions. I have not given up on this game, but I have been working at a sporadic pace.

I really wish I could have a playable demo worth a damn ready in a month but I'm just not seeing it as a reality. November 26th-December 10th is going to be me visiting family and then almost immediately going on vacation. So I technically only have a little over two weeks, and do not have a game that's playable. Meanwhile, my work schedule continues, as does my exhausted and fed up get-home-and-play-tons-of-Skyrim-everyday routine that's developed lately. Yep, it's ugly.

It's been a crazy year for me, if life stuff in general was more low key this year then I'd probably already have the first area of my game done and well into the second area. But yeah, shit happens. Last thing I need right now amidst stress, burn-out and depression is feeling bad about the contest. I'm sorry I contributed to the contest turnout being shitty, but it honestly couldn't be avoided under the circumstances.

Anyways, I'll throw in with some information, even though like Master K I'm kind of uncomfortable talking about stuff before it's like, done:

I haven't decided on a game title yet. The story is going to revolve around hunting down some plot devices... er, ancient artifacts called Tetramacht (name prone to change) that emanate corruptive magic energies, so that they can be destroyed. Kind of like the One True Ring, except more than one of them. Each Tetramacht will be in a separate game area, and it will be player choice on which order they'd like to play through the areas. Completing an area will trigger a global enemy level-up so the game keeps up with players getting higher levels and better equipment. Armaments at shops will likewise scale with game progress.

There's going to be 7 playable characters, including the (mostly) silent protagonist main character, whose name and gender will be choosable. I'm going to implement at least a few out-of-battle skills/specialties for characters, for things like optional areas in dungeons. Kind of like using robot master powers in Megaman X on level design elements. Also an important element of my game design is going to be that nothing will be missable. Re-exploring and backtracking will be completely unhindered. Worrying about missing treasure and having to replay the entire game to have another chance at it, screw that. Not happening. I want to make a game where exploration and going back and trying different things is not punished or restricted.

I have some really clear, strong ideas on scenario writing and plot; really I have pretty much a 99% complete storyboard in my head and on paper of what sorts of settings and events will take place in the game. The challenging part has been doing the inbetweening, to use animation terminology, and making the separate parts of the game gel together. I'm getting the hang of it, but it's taking time. Also coming up with names for characters and nameplaces, UGH, this is pretty much the hardest thing ever. (I've gotten "stuck" on RPG character naming screens for over half an hour at times, it is excruciatingly hard for me to come up with names.)

I'll be looking forward to delivering my game sometime next year. Heck, I might even have a playable demo ready in late January, I'll be down to just one job at the end of this year so crunchtime will be possible.

The layout reminds me of the mountain areas in Final Fantasy 6, what with the "cave leading out to small grassy cliff-type area with another cave" sort of thing. I can't get a good feel for the actual graphics from such a zoomed-out view, but the layout being FF6-like is pretty neat.

Cool, actual details about games.

And what about eligible games which haven't been explicitly entered in the contest? t4r4d1ddl3 is such a game. Definitely meets the length requirement. Very nice.

Master K: do you mean that the player chooses the god for the main character at the beginning?

But does that mean that backtracking will be encouraged, even strongly? There was a recent thread here about how allowing people (such as me) with obsessive completionist tendencies to indulge their bad habit of backtracking to see everything can be seen as a bad idea. On the other hand, if backtracking to see this extra content isn't a boring sludge, then, great! Just the game for me :P

Indeed. There will be five gods to chose from, all plot relevant. Although, there will be minor deities to pop up in the story occasionally, they'll be the main five.

I would like to join the party too. I'm already working on various projects but most of them don't pass the technical demo phase. There is one game i'm working on but I will try to deliver it in time but I can't guarantee that cus' I'm working on our first album (me and my wife) and I'm doing extras at my work until the end of the week. I'm working sporadically at it but it still not playable already, maybe in two week, may be three... only time will tell.

Now let's get to some Screens

The thing with t4r4d1ddl3 is that it's an awesome journey game with great dialogue and the perfect design for the Heart of the OHR, but it isn't an RPG, that I could tell. It's more of a straight up quest, which is a bit to the side of what we're going for here. That's how I saw it at any rate.

However, like I'm open to all interpretive things, I can be open to the idea of making the "journey" story eligible. But does it have character progress? Can it be classified as anything other than a top-view platformer with dialogue?

If I add t4r4d1ddl3 now, I think it would be a desperation move, and I'm trying to avoid those.

Foxley wrote:

Your game sounds really cool, kinda like Village People: The Video Game. I hope you find time to release a demo of it soon. To echo TMC, it sounds like my kind of game.

Speaking of desperation moves, I do want this contest to feature a lineup worthy of the Heart of the OHR's legacy, and I'm starting to wonder if I should stretch the window a little wider....

I kinda hate having to cast extensions, though, so I won't make any changes (or promises) yet. But the stuff I'm hearing about and seeing has me a bit tempted. Sounds like each of your games would make great additions to the lineup.

I don't know, it seems like everyone, including James and his bugfixing, is falling way behind this year. An extension might be necessary. Urgh.
