Yes, the default font size on Slime Salad for me is so tiny that I need to set it to +2 to read it semi-comfortably without leaning forward. Even then,

Quote:
Yes, Normal is pretty easy. If you jam the queen behind an isolated area, you've won and can take your time. Maybe I'll introduce a Medium with two queens that can't unjam doors.

While I was jamming doors, I found Normal quite easy without that strategy. But now that you mention it, I'm jamming door much more often, and it does make it easier. So far I've twice come close to beating Hard: once two rooms from the escape, plenty of ammo and hp (and I didn't even realise the count down was about to expire), and once I blew myself up just one room from the escape pod.

It only seems to take queens one turn to unjam a door. Or at least they only turn dark for one turn when doing so.

If you die and unjam a door the same turn, you only get the door unjammed message.

Many of the maps are a lot harder than normal because all the security rooms, medbays, or weapons rooms spawn next to each other.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and claim that "Nightmare" is impossible. In fact, it'd probably still be impossible EVEN if you could see where all the aliens are at all times, UNLESS the map is generated in a, hm, VERY generous manner.

Finishing Hard feels like a pretty good accomplishment. But again it seems highly dependent on the layout.

They turn dark for one turn, but they don't move on the second. They turn light again to indicate that they're about to move.

Not really. I did very well up until I couldn't go into anymore rooms since the map didn't fully load correctly.

I still think you're zoomed. Did you try Ctrl+0?

Brood now has customizable difficulty. If you want to play Nightmare with only one Operations room, or if you want every room on the ship to be 1x1, you can do that.

As a side effect of these changes, I changed how doors are spawned, so you'll see more security doors on average than before, especially on higher difficulties. The number of normal doors remains the same.

The game is very difficult when all the rooms are 1x1.

I'm on Firefox 26.0 and it works fine for me.

I beat the game the first time I tried on Medium. I haven't beat Hard yet. I'm not sure I understand the technique for the game, other than plotting the shortest course through the ship.

Mogri, what is your personal strategy?

I suspect Mogri's strategy will be informed by his knowledge of the code. It SEEMS like alien queens WON'T unjam doors in certain circumstances. I can't decide if queens are trying to get 'closer' to you, or are intelligent enough to find a 'long way around' a security door (even if this long way around involves unjamming a door...?).

In general, I'd say it's worthwhile to think about making efficient use of your ammo. I think it can often be worthwhile to take damage from a drone if it means you'll have a chance to stun a queen with that ammo instead. I also think that the more chances you 'arrange' to be able to stun a queen, the better.

The code is available on the page, if you're curious.

Jamming doors is key to victory on higher levels. It trivializes Normal and Easy, since you can close off the half of the ship the queen is on. On Hard, it's still helpful to jam doors even when you know they'll just be unjammed in a couple of turns.

One general strategy I should mention: you should hardly ever take damage. I hardly ever use medbays, especially on runs I end up winning. It's much more productive to avoid fighting, especially when there are more drones than you can deal with. On the other hand, in the case where there are that many drones on the board, it's worth taking damage while you figure out a path to escape, whether that's through a security door or by separating yourself from the swarm by jamming doors. Don't just empty your clip into a wave of drones. Queens, though, are great to shoot because it lowers the spawning rate and possibly lets you trap them behind jammed doors.

Finally, the SOS should be performed as late as possible, ideally during the self-destruct countdown. Queens go berserk after the SOS. If you have enough life, just charge through enemies and use the escape pod.

Brood fan-art! And yes, I did try scaling these down to game-marker size, but then they were too small to see. Oh well.

And after I had finished and uploaded these, I realized that "overweight cosmonaut" was totally the wrong angle to take for the player character. I should have gone with Sigourney Weaver in tank-top and underpants, but that will have to wait for another fan-art :)

Are you meant to be able to fire at aliens in rooms adjacent to you? Also, with 'all aliens visible', you can currently fire at any alien on the screen.

Oops! No, that's a mistake. I never actually thought about it, to be honest.

It's fixed now, so apologies to anyone who was relying on the exploit Hurr
