I've only touched GM a little bit, but I figure someone here will be interested to know this.

To get your license, you need to download and install GameMaker, then select Beta and update. Kind of confusing, but it worked for me.

It's ok, a bit (...ok, a lot) clunky at times, but it's fairly flexible. It can be a real pain to work with at times, and the interface leaves a lot to be desired, but for the most part, it works well enough for certain tasks.

You can export to Windows and to Mac, so I guess you could sell that. I could very well be mistaken though. As for how long the license lasts, I have no idea.
