Android/OUYA RPG collaboration game

Is anyone interested in collaborating on an RPG game for Android and OUYA which should be purchasable when completed? The profit will be split between everyone in the collaboration.

Since Android/OUYA support is now in beta and being tested by Sir Bob the Hamster and his party of humble developers. I think it would be a great idea to start a game designed from the ground up to be a Android/OUYA release title to commemorate the newly added support. Since the final release of this support won't be out until much later this year, it would be good to start such a collaboration game soon.

The game should be an RPG, as that was the engine's purpose when it was first conceived in Sir Bob's uterus... err.. I mean tender brain.

The game shouldn't be too long, and the story should be very easy to get into for any player. There should be a fairly short tutorial thingy, that shows the player how to equip items and use their first spell.

The graphics, music, and sound effects should all be original, as the game will be sold.

No complex game mechanics that might confuse a new player, lets use the keep it simple, stupid method. Plotscripting should be used to drive the story, intro, and cutscenes. Perhaps a simple mini-game if it's easy enough for anyone to grasp. We also don't want to spend a large amount of time testing and bug squishing, and we don't want a game breaking bug in the first version. Limiting plotscript use to what it was originally meant for limits the possibility of a script breaking the game. Broken games immediately get bad reviews... bad reviews get less purchases... You get the point.

I am very open to ideas on a story, but it should be easy to follow... none of that Chrono Cross shit! And especially nothing like Momento. These types of stories aren't very easy to follow, and if a player isn't happy because he/she is too stupid to understand what's going on... That's a bad review, which leads too... I'm not going to repeat myself.

If you have some interest in this collaboration game, please post any ideas you might have in this thread to discuss further. I'm not sure how long we have until Sir Bob released a stable Android port, so we got to get a move on here!

Everyone involved will be credited in the game for the work they contributed. If you only want to contribute say sprites, tiles, music, or sound effects that fine. You don't need to wear every hat to be part of this collaboration game. Just like a game development studio, everyone wears their own hat, they rarely double dip. Although if you want to double dip that's fine too, this is the OHR community after all.

Okay folks, gather round. Here is Dr. Gomez's genuine, bonafide, patent proof, 100% guaranteed to be a #1 smash hit recipe for game design.

#1. The cast has to be high school kids. Old men wish they were high school kids. High school kids wish they could change the world. Old Men and High School Kids are the only people who buy video games. DO THE MATH!

#2. Themes of alienation. High school kids feel alienated 'cause they're turning into people and it's not the kind of people their parents were. Old men feel alienated because high school kids don't think they're as cool as high school kids did when the old man went to high school. Again, these are the only two kinds of people who buy games. This will make them feel that your game "gets it" and "understands". ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK!

#3. The setting should be somewhat recognizable. If you go for Sci-Fi, people still drink something like beer and watch something like football. If you go for fantasy, children go to school instead of pulling plows, and parents take an active role in their childrens education instead of letting them "learn in the field". THAT'S WHERE THAT PHRASE COMES FROM!

#4. Party composition! Every party needs a generic, probably male protagonist onto which our lonely, sad players can project themselves, an attractive female protagonist to let us know that the generic male protagonist isn't gay, and a cooler, stronger male protagonist who'll leave on and off, because guy friends are always kind of flighty and love-triangley. Cecil, Rosa, Kain. Mario, Peach, Bowser. George, Lorraine and Marty. TIME TESTED FORMULA!

So, if I were to pitch this sombitch, I would say we should have the story focus on haves and have-nots. It's an easy way to get people to take sides. So let's say that monsters are roaming the countryside because of massive environmental damage (RELEVANT!), and everyone who can't afford fancy treatments is terrified that they might turn into a monster themselves (SUBTEXT!).

You're a guy in the city who hasn't really seen monsters the way poorer, country-type folk have. Your best friend is even richer than you, lives in a gated community, more popular, in some kind of position of authority, Head Boy or Hall Monitor or some shit, but he makes you feel like you belong. He walks you and some random girl (ANY GIRL, THEY DON'T MATTER) home, and all three of you get bitten by a monster who popped out of the sewers.

You're okay and all, nobody's seriously hurt, but the parents and teachers and other students are kind of weirded out by it, and it's decided that the best thing is for all of you to go off to a ranch somewhere where the cool, rich people won't have to see the hideous evidence of monster attack (THEY'RE LIVING RIGHT BELOW THEM ALL :O).

So there the three of you find yourselves, working on a ranch that's owned and totally neglected by Richie Rich's family. One of their standard chores is beating up/chasing off the monsters who eat their livestock, and so the three of you as the rookies, go down into a cave to try and save a goat or something. Only you get down there, and the monsters don't try to attack you, they look at you as kindred spirits! Do you bash their skulls in and save the goat? Bash the goat in and roast it on a spit? Where do you belong? What should you do? Can such different people ever live in peace and harmony? Are you the world's best chance for that to happen?

I'll tell you after I've received my cut.

EDIT: and what exact role are you going to play in this, Chronoboy? What's your take? What's to stop me and the artists from taking the ideas and the talent and cutting out the middle man?

I'd like to help.

So, in short the story's setting is about a world (like today) where monsters and humans live and the monsters attack/steal food from farms, wich are less protected than the villages of rich people?
The plot is about three friends/young people who discover the monster's secret (hideout)?

As another story I could offer an unfinished-unreleased game about school children that go alien hunting (theme: groups and outsiders).Still, I'll also go with that "monster robb farms"-story.

1) What do those monsters look like?
2) How will the whole game look like? What mood shall it create?
3) How large/small will the whole project be?
4) Like how many maps, attacks, ect?
5) Was there a deadline mentioned?
Now too many questions stat coming up... Surprised

I can contribute tiles, though I'm not sure if my style would work well with the theme. I can do scripting as well I suppose.

I'd also like to know, what are you going to be doing, Chronoboy?

Overall, my most applauded skills seem to be in map design, so I think I may make that my main focus. I can contribute some character dialogs for various random NPCs, maybe a side quest.

I believe I answered part of the question there. That does sound like an interesting story, while reading it, it reminded me of Zombies, not sure why. Zombies are still rather popular with today's youths, so perhaps making it some sort of Zombie infestation wouldn't be such a bad idea. Of course adding our own take on it of course. Has anyone seen World World Z yet? Here's something unique they do in the movie:
The Zombies do not attack people with a terminal illness, so they take advantage of this to destroy the Zombies in the end... I won't say anymore.

Not saying I'm into Zombies, I personally don't think the world needs yet another Zombie game. But if Zombies are where the money's at, then why not?

I'm also going to be updating my first post in this thread with Credits, so we all know who wants to do what, and what we need.

marionline wrote:
1) What do those monsters look like?

That's up for discussion.
marionline wrote:
2) How will the whole game look like? What mood shall it create?

This is also up for discussion, if using Gizmog's story, it should be tad dark, but not too dark... Maybe the graphics should be high contrast full with color. I guess we should discuss this a little further.
marionline wrote:
3) How large/small will the whole project be?

As mentioned, it should be a fairly short game, should be completable in roughly 10 hours. We should leave room for a possible sequel if the game does prove to be successful. I only say a shorter game, as it will be for a casual gaming device, and people won't be playing it for hours on end. Keeping it short also allows us to keep the excitement up for the player won't want to stop playing. I'd like the sort of the story where the player wants to know what happens next. So the events should be very exciting and also pose a mystery to keep the player lured into the game. Games on Android can be returned for a full refund within 30 minutes, so the first 30 minutes needs to be eye catching.
marionline wrote:
4) Like how many maps, attacks, ect?

This will not be set, as the game is developed it will grow as we think of new areas the player may need to explore and new attacks to add for special enemies we add. At minimum it should have at least 5 maps, if a world map is used. Since this is for a more casual gaming device, a world map would be a good idea.
marionline wrote:
5) Was there a deadline mentioned?

The deadline would be when a stable version of OHRRPGCE is released for Android, or shortly after so that we can bug test it with a stable release. Also developing alongside the release will help Bob and TMC out with bug testing. That's another large reason I am thinking about this project. Bob needs a game which will use in-app purchases and other Android/OUYA specific features. So this game won't be released on PC, but may at a later date, depending on input from this community. Of course everyone involved in the project will receive the .RPG file to freely play.

Personally, I don't like Zombie themes and I can't draw them either, I think. Still, I would try...

I drew some scetches following Giz's idea of the story (without zombies):

If you are okay with the style, please tell me how to continue, or else tell me to retry and what to improve/change. ;)

Speaking of myself, I want a toony artist (or two as I consider my drawing style also rather toony and cheerfull.)
We'll have to wait and see if that fits with the ideas for the story ect., I guess.

Heh, if we're going with toony though, my art style for tiles might be out as I tend to be more dark and gritty. I can give bright and happy a go though. Either way, I can still do scripting. Though with Spoony on board, he might be a better choice for script-dude than me.

I'm fine with toony graphics, may attract a larger audience. Is the game going to be "family friendly" or have mature content?

Overall, it seems like this is going to happen, as lots of people seem excited and have plenty of ideas to bring.

I am thinking of trying to use bitbucket or a similar service to host the .rpgdir during development. I am curious how usable it would be for a collaboration OHR project. I heard from Bob that some things might be tricky, since the GEN file stores the record counts. I'll do a few tests and see what works and doesn't. I would like everybody involved to have their own local copy of the game.

I also recently built a small web app to keep track of specific resources... namely tags, as in a game I am working on, I found it easy to forgot what tag # is for what. Since entering the tag number directly is much quicker than using the arrow keys, I wanted an external database to reference during development. It also keeps track of other things like heroes, enemies, and their stats. You can even see a side-by-side of a hero at a specific level and an enemy to me sure balancing worked at certain points in the game. Long story short, I will deploy this somewhere and give everyone involved access.

I'll voice act if you desire, for sure. I love doing it.

My only thing that would prevent me from doing a ton of work on this is my already in-progress project, Merciful Mungbeans. Once I'm done with that, I'd be gladly willing to help out, I just need a list of what is desired or a general theme of monster. Any humanoid type character monster should be drawn by the same artist as the ones who do the heroes....assuming the heroes are humanoid. I'm well on the way to getting the game done, though. All I need to do is take some time with it and put my roughdraft to reality, and the only thing that's going to take me a bit is stats for foes and finishing up battles, really.

edit: just....if you wish for my services, let me know, and start making at least theme requests, as I need at least a minor direction of what to draw or you're gonna start getting things like this:

Also, I vote family-friendly, as that's how I roll~
