I'm working on yet another new game instead of finishing one of the many projects I've started (I'm an OHR game maker though, so that should be obvious).

I have seven characters built and 16 spells in my magic system. These spells are divided into eight spell lists, of which each character will begin with only one:

FIRE SPELLS
Spread fire attack
Spread attack boost
Spread inflict mute
Focused bestow regen

WATER SPELLS
Focused heal/cure poison
Spread ice attack
Spread defense boost
Spread inflict poison

AIR SPELLS
Spread inflict stun
Spread agility boost
Optionally spread electric attack
Focused revive

EARTH SPELLS
Focused heal/remove stun
Spread willpower boost
Spread context-sensitive spell
Focused impaling attack

NUKER SPELLS
Optionally spread electric attack
Focused impaling attack
Spread fire attack
Spread ice attack

HEALER SPELLS
Focused heal/remove stun
Focused heal/cure poison
Focused bestow regen
Focused revive

BUFFER SPELLS
Spread agility boost
Spread defense boost
Spread attack boost
Spread willpower boost

MEZZER SPELLS
Spread inflict stun
Spread context-sensitive spell
Spread inflict poison
Spread inflict mute

What these characters look like:

What I'm looking for are suggestions on two things:

1) Which spell lists to give to each of these characters. Make a compelling argument for it, I want to be persuaded.

2) What species should my eighth character be? Giving an equal number of male and female options to the player seems nice (and thus she will definitely be a female of whatever she is), and having a full eight characters to choose from and leaving none of the spell lists out also seems like the right thing.
* No canines, felines, or rodents; there's two of each of those in the roster already.
* Already strongly considering raccoon, skunk, stoat, or otter. Even just reaffirming one of these is welcome.
* So far nobody uses the dark brown, red, royal blue, light green, dark green, purple, or pink on my palette as his primary fur color. It won't hurt to reuse a color/shade from someone else, but why stop just short of full variety?

What about something really different? Like an elephant (Might have to get creative on the colors for him, but a green elephant could be cool), a crocodile/alligator, or a dragon? Even something like a hippo or rhino could add some variety to the cast.

As for the assignments, I think I'd make the light blue mouse lookin dude the Mezzer. Mice in folklore generally tend towards tricksters or plaguebearers, which'd fit nice with the stuns and poisons and debuffs. Plus he looks like the kind of dude who'd confuse you anyway with those big tricky eyes.

I think I'd make the next one down, the yellow leopard looking lady the buffer. Buffing is all about helping someone else, and everything about her facial expression says "I love you and want to help you."

The dark gray fellow would be my nuker. He's got that stare, like he's seen and done some stuff he ain't proud of and seems like a natural match for some serious violence. The electric spread and impaling stuff makes me think of a Palpatine sort of dude, and dark gray thing is the evillest looking dude on the list.

Don't really know about the rest. I think for the tiger I'd go Fire or Air, because they've got a good combination of offensive, buffing and disabling, which fits with the a real life tigers "Charge, Pounce, Disable" method of downing prey. The light gray Nermal looking kitty would lean towards earth if it was my choice, though I don't really have a good reason for that.

Okay, so Fenrir made the suggestion of making my final character an otter with the water spell list. Giz's suggestions for the mouse, cheetah, and jackal have been acted upon as well (I just thought those fit so nicely that I went with them right away).

As such, there are now four animals left:
- Tiger
- Rabbit
- Squirrel
- Wolf

And four spell lists:
- Healing
- Fire
- Air
- Earth

And color suggestions are still open for the otter, but I'm leaning a bit toward blue.

P.S.
The Giz wrote:

Admittedly, having a heart-shaped nose helps with this.

Let's start with the easy one:

Tiger = Fire. This one's so cliche its almost a requirement. Most players will automatically assume the Tiger has fire spells, so this makes a nice obvious choice for them.

Rabbit = Earth. Rabbits are burrowing creatures, mastery of earth spells makes a great deal of sense. Ironically, the player will assume this is the healing class, but I'll get to that in a minute.

Squirrel = Wind. Wind is the element of chaos, it's gentle, brutal, flighty and wholly unpredictable. The same can be said for squirrels. Perhaps doubly so...

Wolf = Healing. Now run with me on this. Most think of the healer as the white mage, but monks can do just as well. A wolf would not be a healer in the classic "oh you poor thing, let me help you" way, but in the "get your lazy ass back up and FIGHT!" kind of way.
—- So anyway, how are you?

What in the world is a "mezzer?" I don't think I've heard that one before.

I like the idea of an otter for the water-user (otters are kind of underrepresented in things not named Redwall, at least from what I've seen. There's some otter Pokémon, but... there's a Pokémon version of almost everything. And those are literally the only two things involving otters I've seen.)

An alligator/crocodile would be good too, though, and it'd add some variety rather than the party just being 100% mammals. A frog/toad/salamander/etc. would be good for the same reasons. Or some sort of bird, like a seagull or duck or something. Conveniently, all of those fit well as water-users too (toads tend to be less "water-y" than the others... but at the same time they're more "poison-y," and the water list having a poison spell, so it still works.)

Is there any particular reason they're all mammals, by the way? (Just what you like drawing more? what you're more familiar with? or what?)

Yeah, the main reason they're all mammals is that those are what I prefer to look at, and thus what I prefer to draw. I also like dragons quite a bit and could have gone with a dragon as a fire-user for the eighth one and made the tiger the water-user.

But now I've already drawn the otter.

Just not sure if I want her to be pink or not.

The rest of your characters are at least somewhat realistically colors. I wouldn't make this one pink.

The pale blue is good for the mouse, but cyan isn't so realistic for a wolf. I've been thinking of trying the dark red or the darkest of the dark browns for the otter.

EDIT: And here she is with all the other available colors, just as a comparison.

If I went with the dark brown, I will probably change here eyelashes to white. It actually looks the worst of the lot to me now though, followed by light green and then pink.

I don't see anything wrong with the pink, I kinda liked the variety it added. Of this new set of colors, I think I like the red the best, then the light brown and then the dark brown. I actually kind of dig the greens too, don't be too quick to put them off. Realism is overrated.

The more I thought of it, the more I thought that blue and red were my favorites, followed by pink and the light brown. And since I already had one unnaturally colored character who was blue, I figured I'd make the other one red.

I do love the greens too, just maybe not for this character.
