Maybe someone will put out something worse than I did, but I doubt it.

Sounds like this contest is a bit anemic. Or maybe it's awesome I don't know I haven't played the entries yet. As such me and Giz have decided to AMBUSH this contest. By my clock we still have 4 hours left to make a game. We are starting now. Let us finish or forever be SHAMED.

I demand there to be a muffin in the game. I will LP the game if you put a muffin in it. Just let me know.

A masterpiece for sure.

edit:
I was disappointed at the lack of muffins.

I've reviewed Nate's game, and GizDHawk's game. I'll be submitting reviews of the others later along with my rating list.

super edit:
eh, I really don't feel like reviewing them, so I'll just rate.

and, unfortunatly, it seems that Spoonweaver will be DQ'd for using too many colours on the cat sprite.
You gots black, grey, dark grey, pink, and white PLUS transparency going on with the cat. As much as the game amuses me, that's too many colours. And yes, I downloaded the labeled 8-bit version.

My thoughts on each game:

1) Meh.
The best game in the bunch. My biggest gripe is that I only ever gave one extremely generic insult or concession, rather than having lines relevant to the particular scenario. It's a pretty-well polished memefest, but really there's nothing wrong with that. Maybe I'll try again and get a different ending, since this is the only game here that makes me want to play more.

I was consistently rude to the guy trying to hold up the line and get a manilla envelope for free and the one who makes a mess and refuses to even wash his hands, but consistently nice to internet lady because I was afraid of her giving bad reviews and the guy paying with pennies because there's nothing wrong with what he was doing.

2) Cat in Box
Everything seems to work as intended; it's functional, but not very fun. Ctional, I guess. Something in the presentation feels lacking; it comes across as a very lazy attempt at cashing in on the casual gaming scene. I'm not tempted to open it back up and play again.

3) LAZERTAG
Okay, you lose points for making the game's filename LAZERTAG and the .exe LASERTAG. For a one-joke game made in four hours, this could easily have gone a lot worse. I like how its one fight isn't won by holding down the spacebar.

4) IhopeIfinishthis.RPG
I had a hard time not putting this one above LAZERTAG. I just don't have enough content or humor in it to feel justified doing so yet. However...

5) The Absolute
I wanted to like this game, but there really wasn't much there. It seems that scripts are used in place of doorlinks for no discernible reason, all the orange looks ugly to me, the main attack doesn't even have a name, there's no music or sound...what little is here lacks presentation and polish. At least the fights are easy and not too frequent. When you get the baseball bat you're sent into the attic for, a textbox tells you that you can't equip it; not only that, but it doesn't show up in your inventory.

I'm giving the biggest point reduction, however, for uploading as a RAR instead of a ZIP. Imaginegaming was kind enough to send me a .zip, but it didn't come with anything other than an RPG file. You should include a copy of GAME renamed to you RPG's filename, SDL.DLL and SDL_Mixer.DLL when distributing a game, and should not use overly generic filenames like "8bit" "8-bit" or "8bits" - some of us like keeping a bunch of our OHR games in a single folder, thanks.
Remeber: God made you special and he loves you very much. Bye!

On the cat graphics, there are only 3 + transparency. The black is the transparent; it was in there for the purposes of drawing the sprite, but then placed against a black background so it doesn't register as a color at all. Then, when the cat is walking, its nose is WHITE, so the only colors are:
1. Dark Grey
2. Grey
3. White
4. Transparent

The cat sprite only uses pink when it's inside the box and the dark grey is abandoned, therefore it's still only 3+1. Check again.

About Cat In Box and its 8-bit-ness (or not): the version of the game I got from clicking the download link labeled as "8-bit version" doesn't actually seem to be the 8-bit version, going by the screenshots on the game page. The "8-bit version" title screen with the gray boxes and high scores doesn't show up in the "8-bit version" I downloaded, it has the "big cat popping out of box" title screen instead (and yeah, the cat sprite in-game does use too many colors in that version--the background is a different green/blue/grayish color, and the cat has black, two grays, white, and pink.)

And after downloading the other one, it seems they're both exactly the same... so where did the actual 8-bit version go??

Does Pepsi Ranger's big update to Entrepreneur count for this contest? It was released inside the contest window, and uses all 8-bit sprites-- but I don't know if updates to existing games qualify... I guess so, because Meh 2.0?

I built Meh2.0 from the ground up since the old scripts were a complete mess. Sometimes your sanity would drop and sometimes it wouldn't. Also it had a habit of overflowing the script interpreter, and I couldn't very well have THAT happen by adding new scenes! This is about as much of a remake as the DS version of FF3 was, in the sense that it shares the same name and story, but its really a whole different beast under the shiny packaging!

Also it was just easier to redo all the graphics in an "faux 8-bit" style. A ton of sprites fake having white in their palette by simply being transparent. Its much more obvious when they're moving around, but the biggest one is probably the sanity meter which abuses the whole "show value" command and an animating tile. Anyhow if Cat in Box makes a mistake in having one two many colors on the sprite, I'd say it should stay in because it tried to keep with the SPIRIT of the contest ;)

Gosh its hard typing on a phone, wish they'd hurry up and bring back my ibternet!
To friends long gone, and those I've yet to meet - thank you.

First, I seem to have made a mistake when I went to update Cat in Box last time. I uploaded the updated version on top of the 8-bit version instead of the normal version.
The mistake has been corrected, and I'm sorry to the few people who downloaded the game between now and when I updated it last. However, you should still have experienced the game in the exactly same way you would have if it was the 8bit version, aside from mistakely thinking the game DQ'd itself.

Secondly, this isn't the voting thread. Which is really odd considering you clearly read the voting thread and learned how you're suppose to vote before posting here.
