I want to make my master palette only in black/grey/white colors. So the whole game will not be very colorful, but that is my chance to draw backgrounds on my own with a pencil!

Sounds great!

I'm going to have to step out of participating in the contest unfortunately. I'll still be here as co-host and will be funding the prizes, but won't be submitting a game this time.

Still not sure whether I'm gonna enter or not, but I realized that some of you may not've seen this and thought it could put things in perspective a little. Now, it's ten years old so you're gonna need an older game.exe to make it work, but it's worth the effort. For what?

How about an NES style platformer from the dark ages? Before we had slices, before we had sound effects and MP3s, before we had half of the plotscripting stuff we do now Retrogamer made a game that was 8 Bit as hell! That's right, I'm talking about motherslimin Trailblazers.

Play this thing, and really take a look at how it tries to be 8 Bit not just aesthetically (PS: he's not *totally* obeying the palette rules of this contest, but he's still pretty close and has the right feel.) but also in terms of design. Lots of little things that remind you of platformers of the era, little homages to enemies or mechanics of those older games.

And remember, that was ten damn years ago! You can do so much more now, so many bigger and better things. You have no excuse not to blow the roof off this contest! Make something REALLY 8-Bit, don't just pick 16 colors and make the same ol' shit you always make.

Would it be intrusive to talk about NES or 8-Bit styled games in here and discuss some of the things we like and dislike about them to get the creative juices going?

I think that is a great idea, Giz! I had totally forgotten about Trailblazers as well.

@Meowskivich - Here's the Soda_piggy 16 color palette I made a while back, specifically for use in the OHR 8-bit contest.

And here are some examples of how to ramp across the hues to achieve different effects if so desired.

It's NOT the "perfect palette" (cause there is no such thing), but I spent a while optimizing it and it works well for many different styles. Anyone who wants to use it is free to do so. Happy OHRing!

How would you feel about having this palette included in the "import/Master Palettes" folder of an OHR installation?

Thanks! This is good stuff. I ended up replacing the darkest gray, which I felt was too close to black, but the rest of the colors are a better fit for what I wanted than what I could get from the default palette.

@Meowskivich: Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll probably bite the bullet and draw them myself. I have a strong legacy of terrible enemy graphics to live up to.

@Mogri - Go for it! Yeah, that gray (actually a deep purple color) is mainly there to act as a buffer for sprites that you want to appear to have a black outline, but if they appear on a totally black background, their outline can still be seen. That being said, that method isn't for everyone. Glad to hear you're making use of the palette!
