2013 8-bit Contest - When?

We haven't had an 8-bit contest in years and I think it's time to bring it back.

I know I can't possibly please everyone but Id like some feedback as to when it would be best to do it. I don't know for sure yet but I feel certain that the contest will be 3-4 weeks in length followed by 2 weeks of voting.

I know some of us have families, full time jobs AND school, so let me know what time would work best for you.

Start of August perhaps? That'll give people time to conceptualize. Unless of course that's against the rules, in which case how about starting it next week?

I looked in the Forum and the wiki... but what is a 8-bit contest?
I think it has something to do with music and graphics.

Do all resources have to have 8 -bits?
What does that mean?
And how is this done?

I'll will have holidays for the 24th on for about 2 months, so August sounds perfect, if the contest is held during that time I could try to participate.

But, of couse, first I'd like to know how it works. Maybe we can also add infos to the wiki. Smile

8-bit means we impose some rules to make sure games resemble the style of 8-bit consoles like the NES.

I don't remember precisely, but I think the limits were 16 colors in the master palette, and 4 colors per sprite (I can't remember if that was counting transparent as a color)

You can search these forums and it will come up with the previous 8-bit contest. As James mentioned, it isn't true 8-bit but it's something we came up with years ago that most people seemed to enjoy.

You can find the past rules by searching the forums, although they may vary slightly for the one this year. Don't worry though. I will probably announce the contest and there be at least a few day lag between the rules being released and the contest actually starting.

Everyone will have plenty of time to read the rules as well as answer questions should they come up before the contest actually starts.

8-bit sprites are limited to 4 colours, including transparency, so essentially 3 colors + transparency.

Sounds like an interesting challenge to me!

Another question to add to the list: Do the games have to be 100% complete, or are demos allowed? Confused

Demos are fine. In fact, many of the best 8-bit games end up being demos themselves.

I'm kind of frightened to take part, but I've decided to.

Let's set a date for it!
