Oh, yeah! I got my OUYA

That pun makes me cringe even as I type it!

Anyway, at long last, I finally got my developer OUYA console for being a Kickstarter Backer!

Here are a bunch of pictures of it

I haven't got a chance to run any code on it yet, that will have to wait a few days.

TMC has made a little progress on the Android port of the OHR earlier today. It still doesn't run on the device yet, but it is getting closer. I have also been tinkering with mouse support in menus, which is important for Android in general (although not at all for OUYA specifically)

First I am going to try and get Bob the Hamster Dirt Dig running on it.

Awesome. How does the controller feel?

Great news about the Android port progress, too!

The controller feels nice in my hands. I dislike the way you have to take the two front panels off the put the battery in, and it is really slow to re-connect after it has fallen asleep, but it feels good in the menus, and the touchpad in the middle seems to work nice.

I am downloading a side-scroller now to see how it feels when playing.

Then sleep :)

You should look into kivy. Its a Python based cross platform toolkit that renders using OpenGL and can create Android games.

It's an open source gaming console based on the Android operating system. It plugs into your HDTV just like your Wii/PS/Xbox would, and has a physical controller with no motion support(at least I think the controller is without Gyro).

Yep! That is exactly what I am using for Bob the Hamster Dirt Dig

Visorman and Flying car? Okay, I will look for those :)

It is a game console that is based on Android, but connects to a TV and uses console-style controllers. It is intended to be very developer-friendly.

Oh, my goodness yes! :)

And since OUYA's gamepad can easily emulate arrow keys and keyboard buttons, the OUYA port of the OHRRPGCE can probably be finished well before the general Android port, since the extended mouse support doesn't need to be finished for it to work well :)

I'd be willing to test the apk on my Android phone and tablet using both a keyboard and a wii mote. I use the wii mote for lots of games on my tablet. I'd love to see ohr running on it. Better yet being able to combine game with the actual rpg file into a unified apk would be awesome and open the possibly of selling on the Android market. If you did that... the engine would gain popularity pretty fast, as game devs can easily make rpgs for Android with no or little coding skills.

looking into the Ouya, I came across a couple weird things.

Quote:
Games on OUYA can include In-App Products, which are how game developers make money.

From what I've gathered, all ouya games are free and you can only charge for "In-App Products". Now I assume this would work something like a demo service than you buy the full game, but the way it's worded sounds like this thing is going to host a crap ton of facebook games.

It's just fancy corporate talk for most paid games having demos. Some stuff is 100% free, depending on the developer. The system's biggest problem isn't that it's full of bad Facebook games, it's that it's full of bad cellphone games. It's essentially an Android phone on your TV, for both the good and bad that carries with it. It's a cheap and efficient way to run tons of emulators for old systems on a modern TV without needing a PC with HDMI-out or a TV with VGA-in.

It looks like a fun tool for developers but as a consumer I see literally nothing it offers that isn't free or almost free on PCs/phones already, as long as you've got a way to plug your computer into a TV. Even many phones have HDMI-out now.

Also having to remove two face plates to get at the batteries is probably the most bizarre design decision I've seen on any controller for at least the last decade. I can't believe they don't just charge via USB considering they're selling them for $50 a piece.

Yeah, the front-panel-removal for battery-replacement is insane. I have heard rumors that they are planning to change the controllers before official release, but I don't know if it will actually happen.

Besides being awkward for changing the battery, it also introduces the problem that you are removing the panel that the buttons move through, and if you don't click it back into place correctly, you end up with sticky buttons.

Currently downloading "Flying Car". Could not locate "Visor Man"

The dude making Visorman says it should be available some time in the next week, I really want to know if it's a genuine game or satire. I seriously can't tell from the marketing.
