Where did I go?

Hey guys, Mystic here.

Sorry for disappearing a few months ago, particularly when people have been waiting on the HotOHR 2012 prizes from me. I feel really bad for leaving that hanging. I will be working on finishing that up ASAP.

If anyone is interested, I have a little bit of story time for you.

Due to a bunch of silly circumstances (many of which are admittedly my fault) I found myself jobless, out of school, and living with my parents. It went ok for a little while (I had time to work on my HotOHR entry!) but eventually I just couldn't take it.

So, I changed my lifestyle a lot. I started sleeping at a regular time, working out, and eating better. I started seriously working on my resume and programming portfolio, and sending it off everywhere I could. I practiced interviewing whenever I could, working on my answers to all of those silly questions.

And, eventually, it paid off about three months later. You're looking at the newest member of the IBM Watson team. Or... reading something written by him. Whatever, you know what I mean. This is literally a dream job for me. I graduated with a major in both Computer Science and Linguistics, and didn't finish Grad School for computational linguistics. But I got what I wanted anyway.

So I'll be moving out of my parents' place while doing the thing that I love.

And hopefully that means more time spent making games again.

Sound like what happened to me, only I'm still attending college and I was hired by a place for one day and they fired me due to having been born with a bad back. Ah, murica.

When IBM Watson evolves into Skynet and declares war on us all, I will be able to tell my children that I knew a guy who was partially responsible for us having to live in a cave and eat rats while hiding from the hunter-killer units ;)

I used to be a bit concerned about getting into NLP with little knowledge of linguists or even grammar, but I'm feeling more confident now. What do you you think about that? It's something that really fascinates me. I was even considering setting aside a few weeks and having a go at the Hutter Prize.

I was actually planning a small OHR "game" for which I was going to do some bigram-based prediction of English text. I'll definitely run the project by you if I feel like starting ;)

Congratulations! And I must say, that's pretty sweet. Pretty much the field I'm working to get into as well, hehe.


And together, we shall bring down the fall of puny humanity by bringing to life out robotic overlords, bwahahaha!
