Hello, I registered during the voting for HOTOHR 2012, But it seems like I should probably introduce myself.

I am Brendan B Aragorn, and I live in south-western Oregon in the U.S.
I enjoy games, books, movies, music, etc.. based around traveling/going places, and that is the sort of games I would like to make. I have been playing computer games since 1990 or '91, console games since 1999. I'm no good with JRPG final dungeons, as I have a record of dropping FF games at or not long before them. I did actually set foot in Kefka's tower, in FF6, but that was as far as any.

I have only ever finished making a game in ZZT, though I have tried GWBasic, QBasic, Megazeux, Hypercard, Game Maker 4-6, and RPG Maker 95, along with the Duke Nukem 3D level editor. I've been reading OHR articles for a few years. I don't remember how I found the OHR, though the first version I tried was for DOS after finding Bobquest, then went back for Werewaffle, and now Alectormany+2. I have played a couple dozen OHR games, but have not made anything except tilesets yet.

Anyway, glad to be here and thanks for the answers on my maximum file size question.

Edit: Bad spacing. Hurr

I welcome thee, sleepish one.

And I feel ya on that never beating an FF game thing. I usually quit at the last dungeons because they're so off-putting to me. Let's see, I made it to sephiroth, and quit in FF7. I got to Hades and beat him....and then quit in FF9 (though I will not erase that file, for great justice will I finish that game!), I got to sin in FF10, I got to the last area in FF10-2, and I've made it to the final area of FF3 (not 6) multiple times.

One of the things I feel is sorta synonymous in these areas are the seriously uncanny unbalancing compared to the rest of the game. Difficulty spikes suddenly and abruptly, and that's sorta what puts me off.

But, yes, greetings sleepish.

Heh, I stopped at the labyrinth in FF3 DS, Never played FF7, Quit FF9 after the jester monster boss on the snowy continent. Stopped Star Ocean 3 just after a certain plot twist. Seems like I always quit at the last chain of dungeons unless I can play after the ending.

practice makes perfect, and it sounds like you've been using the OHRRPGCE for an eternity.

That's good, but other than figuring out the different settings and editors, I haven't actually tried to put together any sort of game.

Well, that'll change for the random collab contest, right? I'm interested in seeing what you will do.

Hi, welcome. I think it's nice to have someone around who's tried so many of the popular languages and engines for creating games. I wonder how many more MZX/ZZT users we have around here? I never tried making anything with MegaZeux, but really liked it. I should try some more of the games.

And I've never even gotten to the final dungeon of a single JRPG myself. I've a thing for not persevering.

Heh, tried is definitely the keyword there. ZZT and maybe Hypercard are so far the only ones with finished projects, since 1996. I'm not very good at picking a project.

I don't mind battles and dungeons, but they aren't what I generally play rpgs for, though less so if there are options.

I've also used ZZT and Megazeux in the past, before I found out that there were RPG maker programs (like the OHRRPGCE.)

I actually still have a couple of the ancient ZZT games that I actually finished (the MZX stuff was lost forever when one of my older computers' hard drive died, unfortunately) but so far I haven't figured out how to get ZZT to run on my laptop (which has Windows 7.)

Cool. Theres an open source dos emulator called dosbox that might work for ZZT, but I don't know how to set it up. It works for the first two elder scrolls games though.

Edit: Off topic but found a youtube video showing how to get it to work. I guess theres a GUI configuration program for dosbox now.

Actually Dos Box is pretty easy to set up. If I recall correctly, you'd just fire it up, type something like this:

mount c c:\zzt
c:
zzt.exe

Or something like that depending on where yor game is located. Then again, I haven't used Dos Box in ages, so my syntax might be wrong.

DOSBOX
http://www.theoldcomputer.com/emulators/index.php?folder=PC/WIN/DOSBox

Whenever I use dosbox, I just create a shortcut that uses the built in Windows command Open With... to open the game with dosbox. Works great, no headaches.
