Maximum file size?

Hello, I'm trying to decide on an idea to use for a game, and some are a lot bigger than others. Two questions if I may:

1. I was wondering if anyone has any idea of a maximum file size before custom and game stop being able to succesfully lump and unlump game data.

2. What are your ideas of maximum accepted file size before a game is too big to be worth downloading, assuming the game is not packed full of large music files like MP3's, ie mostly game.

Thanks in advance.

1) I'm not sure there is a maximum file size - the wiki turns up nothing.

2) Depends on the speed of the download. Personally, I'd say up to a gig, but I can't imagine an OHR game (sans music) getting to half that size.

If the game is just mostly game and not bogged down with large amounts of music files, then I say it can be rather large as it needs to, as long as the game is long and fun enough.

There is no max file size, but here is a list of various limits: http://rpg.hamsterrepublic.com/ohrrpgce/What_are_the_limits_on_various_things%3F

MP3/OGG Music is by far the biggest data. It is not surprising to see just one song be bigger than all the rest of the non-music game data combined.

The Maps, Backdrops, and tilesets, can also get big, but they are still not that bad, and they usually compress well.

I think the biggest problem with a really big game is that it can be an overwhelming task for one game author. A smaller idea is easier to bring to completion.

Thanks everyone, I thought I had read somewhere about lumping glitching out somewhere above 50 megabytes but I wasn't sure. I'm still interested in any reccomendations on size though, I know there are folks with slower internet connections than others.

If you are worried about unlumping speed on a large game, you can distribute your game as a .rpgdir

Just use unlump.exe to unlump a .rpg file. Both game and custom are able to open .rpgdir folders.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember Slime Salad having a problem with big files. Like, it would time out or something before the upload could complete. I guess it would only be a problem if you were planning on having the game hosted here.

You should be fine up to something like 100MB. If your game is larger than 100MB, then you should consider your own hosting options Smile
