There are already several sprite databases out there so I'm wondering how ours would be any different.

Ours would be, like, creative commons or public domain or something.
The only sprite databases I've been to showcase ripped and customized sprites from commercial games. Are there actually some hand-made public domain sprite databases out there?

not from what I've seen, though I'm sure there might be some in the obscure dank deep dark undergrounds of the internet's smelly underbelly.

I have found a few, but their licences were ambiguous. And the sprites were often (as aforementioned) a mix of original and ripped commercial ones, so they're ambiguous in their legality at best.

I just had an idea. How about if our sprite database was organized the same way the engine organizes them.
Gives us the categories:
Tilemaps
Walkabouts
Hero Graphics
Small Enemy
Medium Enemy
Big enemy
Attacks
Weapons
Box Edges
Potraits

And then, the tutorial game can just use some of the open source grpahics from this database once it's made.

I like that idea. Here's my vote for it.

Ok, well a sprite database is basically up to mogri to implement. If you'd like to help convince him to make one, I suggest making a bunch of sprites for it in advanced and pm them to him.

As for the tutorial game, we'll go ahead and wait a bit to make it. We'll need those open source sprites, so might as well call this step 2.

Getting a game on Steam would most likely give the community a huge spike in members, but to do that we each really have to try to figure out what we can do to make our games even better.
I think some of the best games this community has ever put forth have been collaborations. The 2 Heart of the OHR winners, Dungeonmen, Motrya were both colabs. So please consider grouping up with someone that you feel possessed something that you do not. Also, please consider joining the random colab contest. It's a great way of working with someone you normally wouldn't.

What happened to the old plotscripting tutorial game? With the little robot and the spooky tiles?

Just some crazy-talk here, this isn't a promise of a new feature; but what if we had a sprite database website, and when you were in custom, and you exported a sprite-set, you had an option that would automatically upload it to the sprite website?

custom already knows how to use the wget tool to download support files for the Distribute Game feature, and it looks like wget does have some limited support for uploading files, so it might be practical. (again, this is not a feature-promise)

mmm, I dunno if that would be a grand idea or not. if such power were in the hands of insane children, there would likely be a flood of stuff coming in, and horrible crashy-ness would most likely occur. In theory.

and in response to the weaver of spoons: I was thinking about doing sprites and bugging Mogri about them, and if say we should, then I shall. I have already sketched rough drafts of a few monsters this morning during math, and since I have a bit o' time before my next class, I shall put them to computer now.

Also, once I get Merciful Mungbeans released, I was thinking of releasing all (or at least most) of the sprites for open use, since the purpose of my game is to sorta showcase the turn-based style the OHRRPGCE has. I do believe James already made something of this sort, but I'm still gonna do it.

Also, once MM is released, I will also make a compiled tileset to release as well.

Not like I'm the proudest artist in the world or anything, but I have a certain amount of satisfaction with my pseudo-monochrome sprites:

Like Meow, I'm a bit doubtful as to how useful this would be. If it were implemented, there would have to be some sort of quality-control person/people in place to make sure that ripped graphics aren't uploaded and stuff.

It would be an interesting feature to have Custom download spritesets/tilesets though, but I have no idea as to how applicable/feasible/doable that would be.

Well, here's three things on display:

Some sort of flower, I guess. I'm not in the cheeriest mood today, but I felt like drawing some sort o' flower.

Because Master K would most likely demand it, here is a Dingoo.

I'll just let your imagination soar with this one.

Feel free to use them, though I do prefer being acknowledged as creator of such things, I guess. I dunno. As long as they're not claimed by others, just know.... eh, I'm not in the right mindset to explain myself...

edit: I'll send them to mogri in unfiltered pure bmp form if he's willing to do something of the sprite database thing. it would seem being forced into a png by imgur has marred some of the detail on the images

PNG is lossless. I don't see anything wrong with those images. It's the format I would enforce for a sprite database anyway; BMPs are enormous and offer no benefit over PNG for images with low color counts.

Your third image shares a foreground color with the background color. That's a problem for anyone trying to import the image. Because the database doesn't know what you're trying to draw, it can't enforce a distinct background color, but it can show a preview with a transparent background (taking its best guess as to which color that should be), which would help prevent problems like that.

I suppose I could switch it to puce as well. (Is puce a colour? I shall go check)

Anywho, are you saying (or would you say, rather) that you would do the sprite database if we accumulate enough sprites? I'm still a little "eh", so my thinker may be thonking , but I could send you a .zip in a pm with pngs of open-source images created by moi.

In other news, I got a really tart cherry-limeade from a place and drank most of it, but I added the rest of my dad's lemonade, a couple o' lime and lemon slices, some coconut flavoring, and some green maraschino cherry juice (and one cherry) to it, and it's tastin' rather snazzy.

(Puce is a dark brownish purple)

I likes drawing monsters.
