I'm glad I'm not the only one who hated it. My friends were all crazy about it when it came out. Any plans on doing a review of this game?

I'd have to replay it to write something clearly, and I don't want to put myself through that a second time.

I, personally, love Super Paper Mario.
I didn't go into it expecting the older paper mario games due to the fact I've seen ads everywhere going "look! look what we did! we made this rpg into a platformer! and what's else, you can go THREEEEEE DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!" and stuff.
I went in with totally blank expectations and got to try it out when a friend rented it one day and I had a grand time playing it, and only as of Christmas have I owned the game.
Why doth thou hatest the game?

Also, I might add, I am playing this game in recent times :p

I haven't played the older Paper Marios at all so it wasn't about expectations, aside from expecting a well made game. The platforming was incredibly dull with zero challenge, the RPG aspects were so shallow they might as well not exist, the pacing was terrible and repetitive beyond anything I've ever played, and exploration was mindless, with neither risk nor reward. Most of the characters in the game were squares with color gradients applied. I liked some of the writing and I thought the fake dating game scene was really funny. Bowser was funny. Holding right for several minutes at a time while nothing happened was not funny, it was boring, bad game design. I have trouble saying what the worst puzzle in the game is because they're almost all so bad. The town was super tedious and completely bland too.

I honestly feel like the game is more about chilling out and taking things easy rather than actually having any real challenge. After all, you get the amazing "Mega-Star" and turn into 8-bit mario/peachesncream/etc, only super-sized and essentially blast through everything Mega-Mushroom style, just 20% cooler is all.

Yeah, I've no idea what they were thinking at that part.

The town IS rather lacking, but the level's are where it's at. At least there are some pretty neat minigames in town.

Are we talking about the Paper Mario game for the Wii? (that is the only one I have played)

I liked some things about it. I agree that the town was mostly boring and repetitive. My favorite bits were the actual platforming levels. They were easy, but my old-man reflexes didn't mind. I liked the art style in general, and I like and agree with Meow's observation that it felt more like a "just chilling" game than any kind of challenge.

I do remember feeling slightly irritated every time I had to turn the Wiimote towards the screen for any reason.

Ultimately I got about 2/3 of the way through and thought "That was enough" and never got around to beating it. I wouldn't say that I hated it, and I certainly don't regret playing it, but it has been collecting dust in my Box 'O Unplayed games ever since.

As for what I have been playing currently, not counting OHR games and Minecraft, i have been playing a lot of Hero Academy. I like it enough to have payed for all the teams, and I am seriously pondering buying the Steam version, even though I don't have a Windows PC to play it on, just because I want to give my account access to the steam-exclusive team.

(If anybody else here has played it, my username is Bob_the_Hamster, and you are welcome to challenge me)

When I first played the game, my thought was "This game board is way too small for a tactics game!" and I expected to get bored with it quickly. After I gained some skill, I learned that it is less of a tactics game and more of a chess-inspired thing.... if chess pieces had hit-points and each player alternated five moves in a row.

Squares with color gradients are acceptable in hobbyist, free games. Not so much in full price games by Nintendo, especially ones that have very nicely drawn player characters. The whole thing felt rushed and cheap.

It's not like I expected a super challenging game, but it would have been nice to at least be as hard as a regular Mario game if it wants to be a platformer. The jumping physics felt super amateur, and considering it's a Mario game that's unacceptable.

I liked the first world. The rest felt uninspired.

Edit: Between holding right on a hamster wheel for money, holding right to walk through the blank world, hitting a thirty block combination after you're given the code by typing the world "please" six times, and backtracking to a mostly bland town over and over and over again I just really honestly have a hard time thinking of this as a good chill out game.

I agree mostly with what you guys said about Super Paper Mario, although I didn't think (at least the part I played) was too terrible. It certainly wasn't good, but not the worst game ever. I just hope the next Paper Mario is more like the first two. Thousand Year Door was my favorite here.

@ Bob

Wow, that game actually looks pretty sweet- I might have to get into it! I just made an account, and will definitely give it a try later today! Maybe we can play together, then.

Jeez, how could I have forgotten about those? Let's call them "tedium challenges." They are horrible. Only once in a blue moon are they good for comedic purposes, but in hindsight, the tedium Super Paper Merio put me through just feels like arrogant and sadistic carrot-dangling. And that's just the main story mode, the side quests are far worse. I cannot believe I even for a second thought about attempting the Pit of 100 Trials, the Pit of 100 More Trials, and Sammer's Kingdom of 100 Highly Flammable Goons. This is a cheap, artificial method of extending a game's lifetime that I very much loathe.

(maybe it's just me but I kinda likes the Pit of 100 Trials in the Thousand Year Door. I thought the boss and reward were kinda cool, plus I liked finally getting more to my tattle log)

@ Bob

I have downloaded Hero Academy and made a Robot account. My name is Metal_Slime on the game- I think I tried added you! I am terrible but feel free to hit me up!

@ncw64: Cool! I started a match with you!.

The most important strategy tip I ever learned in Hero Academy is simply that before you submit your moves, look at the board, and try to guess what your opponent is likely to do back to you in the next round. If you think they are likely to do severe harm to your team in the next round, consider cancelling your moves and trying a different tactic.

I also played like 30 or 40 matches before I learned that you can tap on your opponent's avatar picture at the top of the screen to see a list of all the units and items they still have remaining.

Hmm that's good advice. I honestly have no clue what I'm doing past kinda basic tactics. I do think the idea of souping up people with gear to risk losing that gear if they get stomped or burned is awesome though, haha.

I'm blasting through both DmC: Devil May Cry and Bayonetta back to back in an attempt to decide which game I like better. I also got the DMC HD collection and spent a few hours in all three of them (protip: DMC2 still sucks hard).
So far, oddly enough I'm thinking DmC (reboot) is my favorite. Bayonetta is still fantastic and exceptionally technical (which I really love), but something about DmC's easily accessible combo system that masks it's hidden depth is really appealing. Previous DMC games were hardcore all the way through, with an absurd bar of entry. This one is very easy to pick up and play, and the pace which you master the controls works perfectly with the difficulty of the game. DmC also has some completely bananas parts, which I loved to death.
I will say this though: no matter how completely crazy DmC gets (and it does, and I love it to death. The TV Reporter boss fight and the Nightclub stage are two of my favorite things ever this generation), replaying Bayonetta afterwords made me realize DmC doesn't hold a candle to that game's wackiness. Bayonetta is in a total league of insanity all its own.
I will say this (since I'm rambling anyway): I like how DmC cuts filler. Bayonetta and the early DMC games have tons of walking around doing nothing or solving puzzles that require no brainpower whatsoever and are just tedious. DmC, with the exception of the start of a single stage, is constant combat all the time with a few exhilarating traversal elements. It really provides a more engaging pacing experience, and focuses the game more on what it's good at (fun, accessable combat that makes you feel awesome) rathe than the bland (running around, trying to find where to go, lame puzzles, etc.).
Also the fact that screams "SADISTIC" "SENSATIONAL!" and whatever the SS rank is in an angry crowd demon voice everytime your combo gets up is weirdly satisfying. Capcom knew they had to either compete with Bayonetta (and probably lose) on a hardcore level or try to do something a little more friendly and different, and they chose the latter. I'm pleased that they did.
Luigi is almost as sexy as me!

Rented Dishonored for a bit. Immediately realized that its basically Thief with a bigger emphasis on fighting (or rather, it's Bioshock for the Thief series). This is the first time in a while where I actually felt uncomfortable using a controller (I normally prefer to use one). I really like the atmosphere so far, but don't want to continue as I'd rather play it on PC.

Also, on the topic of Bioshock: I haven't really been following Infinite or whatever it's called, but every time I see ads for it I feel as if I'm already tired of seeing it. Bioshock 2 really bored me, and I have no intentions of picking the newest one up.

I am attempting this challenge run in Metroid: Zero Mission for the GBA
http://www.gamefaqs.com/gba/914982-metroid-zero-mission/faqs/30067

It's a "No Boss/Miniboss" run. I'm intrigued, as this game is really built to NOT allow you to get ahead or get ANYTHING early even with express skills and knowledge of advanced moves like wall jumps and such.

Edit: I might note, I'm going for the "no charge beam" version, as that seems to be the more legit NBMB run.

Further Edit: Apparently there wasn't any way to actually beat the game, this was some deranged thing where you collect about half of the items in the game without defeating any bosses. Oh well, at least it's proved to me that you can at least obtain the screw attack and high jump boots before you encounter any bosses besides the obligatory Charge Beam Beast of Burden
