Gamepads for OHR

Hey, does anyone have any experience with setting a gamepad up for OHR? I recently bought a USB SNES gamepad, and it works great on the OHR whenever I'm NOT in a battle. But when I'm in a battle it seems the rest of the controls work just fine but I can't scroll down through menus and stuff. Anyone have any help or tips? I've set up control with the joystick from using the "Ctrl + J" command in the game. Is there even a way to make it so the gamepad can work without using that command?

I typically use joy2key (http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm) to use a poorly supported gamepad. (I use a GameCube controller sometimes and most programs don't like it at all). That might be your ticket, as it lets you directly convert button presses to keyboard keys.

Just confirming that Joy2Key works great with the OHR. I too use a real SNES controller converted to USB, and Joy2Key is a lifesaver.

As I understand it, the native joystick support in the OHR is supposed to be revamped and made usable at some point, but I'm not sure how much of a priority it is. It's pretty much always, since the beginning, been too sensitive to actually use, though.

I am almost tempted to abandon built-in joystick support, and just tell people "Use Joy2key"

Really, if joystick support is done correctly, it will send keyval presses exactly like as if you pressed the keyboard.

Of course, I guess I am going to have to get joystick support cleaned up if we ever want an OUYA port ;)

I believe it's within the license of Joy2Key that you can make and distribute config files. There could be a default OHR J2K config file distributed with the build perhaps?

Oh, please do not get rid of joypad support...

I find it works pretty well (though I've never tried it in a battle) and it allows for better multiplayer support, since you can parse between input from multiple joypads (whereas with joy2key, it's all filtering into the same keypresses). This is all coming from me wearing my scripter's hat, of course.

The only issues I've had with a joypad in OHR are the general problems you get when you use a Gravis Gamepad; mainly that pressing up or down also seems to kind of press left or right....

Have you actually made a game that uses joystick and keyboard simultaneously for multiplayer? Is it on the game list?

Or was it just something you hope to do in the future?

Well, I never said simultaneously (although I do believe that would be possible and I have an idea that would implement that)... right now I'm working on a game that would allow for multiple players in a turn-based setting.

Even then, though, it's much nicer for everyone to have their own input as opposed to being crowded around the keyboard or passing the controller back and forth.

And for now, all my stuff is just on my desktop.. I'm waiting until I'm farther along before releasing the game anywhere.

I'd love to see a way to see games released with the gamepad in mind and include the config files for the Joystick. It's a really clever idea. I've been replaying my game to get back into the swing of things and the experience feels a lot better being away from the keyboard.

There's a bunch of gamepads on amazon for 10 bucks or less with more than enough buttons for an average ohr game. Heck, a traditional OHR game that just does OK and CANCEL can be done on the NES controller. I'd love to see this get more popular.

Just wondering if anyone else has had problems with Joy2Key in conjunction with game.exe using the directional pad? I've used Joy2Key with other games/engines and it accepts the directions just fine using the same configuration.

So what's happening?
inputtest.rpg is likely to be helpful in finding out what keys Joy2key is sending. I/someone ought to add joysticks to inputtest.rpg too.

strange... even after telling Joy2Key to send directions from the DIRECTION pad, it sends from the number pad instead. If you press CTRL-E it uses both like the old scancodes.

That's weird. Is this for a stick or direction buttons on the gamepad? If so, does it send diagonal movements like 1 for down left, or does it send 2 and 4 at once?

The fact that the OHR doesn't currently let you move using the numpad is an
open bug.

It's for direction buttons on a gamepad. Diagonal movements are represented as 2 and 4 together, not 1.

In every other game, the info is sent as the PC's directional keys. Only in OHR is it interpreted as the number pad... It's really weird.
