It's been a week or so since I released Super Penguin Chef, so I'm dropping some tips for starting the game. Here is the spoiler-free version: Talk to the information guy in town. Spoiler alert: This thread has them. If you want to discover the game on your own, don't read this! I will mostly share tips for handling the RPG side of things. Do you want to be able to clear half the Orchard of Despair on day 1? Read on!
SPOILERS BELOW
Starting equipment: Buy three of the cheapest knife, four of the cheapest armor, three of the cheapest hat, and one Cone hat. You should just barely be able to afford all of this. Equip everyone, putting the Cone hat on Pengler. This makes his Ice Cube extremely effective. Note that heroes with no weapon have an accuracy penalty, except for Slitherbottom, who doesn't use weapons.
Surviving: Altagator's Roar combined with your armor will sharply reduce the effectiveness of enemy attacks. (Note that Roar does not stack. Use it once at the start of any tough-looking battle.) Ice Cube slows enemies in addition to dealing considerable damage. Piggy will remove an enemy completely, but it has a long cast time and large MP cost, so use it sparingly or not at all. Finally, Venom Fang is a highly efficient damage dealer. The poison doesn't stack, but the damage is considerable at this point.
Your first level: If you're doing well on HP, Lick is a good first pick for Pengler. If you think you're going to get wiped soon, Snowball will give you a bit more punch at the cost of some staying power. Cheer or Hug should be picked up immediately for some healing. Slitherbottom has no really bad options; I'd recommend Venom 2, Mute, or Blind. Altagator, on the other hand, has no really good options for day 1. You don't want Roar 2 right now due to the increased MP cost, and you're not going to use anything else today, since his MP pool is so small. Just pick whatever looks good. Don't level up HP or MP; the bonuses increase with your level, so you'll get more benefit from them later on.
Hidden chests: If a path looks suspicious, explore it for a hidden chest. [list][*]An NPC on the east edge will give you an item that lets you jump back to town. Dying has the same effect, but if you care about a no-death run, then this is a good item to have.
[*]The Frying Pan, hidden in a small passage near the aforementioned NPC, will give someone a considerable boost to both attack and defense. I gave it to Altagator, since Pengler spends more time casting and Hogg Wilde is less accurate.
[*]The Sight accessory will correct Hogg Wilde's slightly low base accuracy.
[*]One of the ducks swimming in the northern lake will give you an Egg.
Restaurant: The first three days of the game are extra-lenient on restaurant cooking. If a recipe isn't in your recipe book, you get a bonus for serving it. This includes Chef's Surprise, but Chef's Surprise won't earn you a perfect score, which means less money and less popularity growth. This only really matters on a challenge run, so don't sweat it.
Preparing for the contest: The Starchmart in town sells Dough, Pasta, and Rice. You should already have some Dough, but the other ingredients are inexpensive and very helpful.
Incomplete dungeons: The other three dungeons are unfinished. Only visit them if you want to buy their ingredients.
