Well, I was hoping this thread would open up a discussion about Wreck-It Ralph. Are you guys seriously implying that you've never seen this image and have no idea what movie I'm talking about? You know, the 52nd entry in the Disney Animated Canon which is about video games?! I'm honestly surprised no one's brought it up before me!

Probably because we've not been to see it yet.
I know I haven't. It's called being poor. And also there's likely a bunch of us who are skeptical that it's just gonna be one of those films that are essentially garbage but it's all "HEEEEEYYYYYYYYY! LOOK! HEY LOOK! WE GOTS US A BOWSER AND A CLYDE AND ZANGIEF AND IZ BOUT VIJYA JAMEZ!!!!".
Essentially, those of us who are rich enough to plonk down $20 for a one-time viewing a video that's gonna be on dvd in half a year for $10 aren't exactly sure or not, most likely.

Though I say that if I did have the money, I might see it.

You're greatly exaggerating those prices. It's not expensive to see a movie in theaters if you don't bother with any concessions or 3D gimmick-glasses. Maybe it is expensive, now that I think about it. My apologies.

I know the marketing team focused a whole lot on the video game character cameos, but all of those are very brief and are only relevant in the first act of the film, when Ralph has a meeting with the self-help group Bad-Anon. The meat of the movie focuses on a small group of unique and likable characters that are all pretty well developed and have completely different personalities from their video game look-alikes. The main villain in particular is quite unique and memorably nasty, though revealing a single thing about this character (even his/her name) would be a blatant spoiler. What I'm saying is that I was just as suspicious as you were, but I'm very satisfied and impressed with what I saw and I would never call this film corporate-pandering garbage.

I'm not a very good review-man, though. I can't convince anyone to see it. Maybe Rotten Tomatoes, Something Awful, or Roger Ebert will give you a better analysis of the film. Matthew Taranto of Brawl in the Family highly recommended it, too.

Still, I lack money so I lack ability to see it. Plus prices for a movie alone are, I believe, $9 a ticket. I remember going to see Dark Shadows with a friend the day before the day before his wedding, and I was like "oh, tickets are gonna be still around 5 bucks or so like they were a few years ago or something" (I almost never go to the theaters), and then I'm like "yeah, me and my pal here, we gunna see some shadows" and they're like "oh, okay, 20 bucks" and I was like "O_O ...k" and paid, so we didn't stay for the showing of Men in Black 3 that started at midnight (which was bull as the ads said "shows start thursdays!", though I kinda, you know, count midnight as the next day, aka friday). Also, even though it would have broke me had we gone, my friend didn't feel like staying until midnight since he had to get up early to prepare for pre-wedding junk. We went to see MiB3 originally, but neither of us had seen Dark Shadows, and it was the literally only other movie on the whole roster we cared to see.

So yes, I forget where I was going with this, but that was theater time with Meowskivich apparently.

You needed to start the discussion before other people will jump in. I've got plenty to say about it that has nothing to do with the cost of movies today which is a frankly bizarre derail.

Ralph is about specific video game references in the same way Toy Story is about specific toy references, meaning not at all. They're fun and serve as a cute backdrop to the main characters but they're neither a focal point nor a distraction. It's a very good movie and worth seeing.

It's directed by one of the major staffers behind the first four years of Futurama and first four years of The Simpsons. I'm not sure how anyone could expect that to be bad. I'm working on a larger review, there's a ton to say about it.

Regarding money and movie tickets, I'm going to have to side with Meowskivich on this one, not everyone has the funds to go out and pay that much money for something you can only view once (not to mention the potential of having your viewing experience ruined by other people). Here in the Philippines, the average movie ticket is anywhere from 150 to 250 PHP, that's around 3.60 to 6.00 USD. Granted, that might not sound like a lot where most of you are coming from, but for the average working-man here, if you're earning 18k-30k PHP a month, you're doing a whole lot better than most people. More realistically, you'd be getting around 12k-16k a month, so a 200 PHP ticket can be a bit much. Personally, that's why I rarely bother to actually watch things in the cinema unless I feel it's really worth the price. This year, the only thing I'm planning to watch is The Hobbit, though because of the Manila Film Festival (Around December, they only show Filipino movies in movie theatres) I might not get to watch it until January or February next year Gonk

With that said, Wreck-It Ralph does indeed look like it'll be a fun movie. I'm a bit wary that it might turn out like Meow said and that it'll throw out video game references for the sake of it, but reading more reviews I do believe it just might turn out to be a good watch. Still, I'll hold out for the DVD or more realistically, borrow the DVD off a friend, hehe.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it! Will it be going up on your Surlaw Reviews blog?

From the looks of things, I really need to give this topic more time. I started this thread the day after I saw Wreck-It Ralph and was super excited about it. I was under the false assumption that almost everyone who was interested in this movie would have seen it ASAP. I also want to avoid spoiling the movie, because it has some great twists that would be criminal to discuss prematurely. So, I'll bring it up again after Christmas or something.

Yeah, I'll post a link here too when it's done. The review will have plenty of spoilers after a certain point, but there will be warnings for them.

I keep hearing great things about this movie, but I was planning until I can Netflix it or rent it. As fun as it sounds, I can't work up the enthusiasm to go to a theater. (And that would go for most movies)

But anyway, I am glad to hear it is good, and I am looking forward to (eventually) seeing it :)

The movie was really, really good, but not as good as Toy Story.

Still, everybody should see it, as it doesn't overindulge it's references and still has a very solid story underneath it's video game exterior.

Also it has a hardcore Gears of War girl knockoff with "the most tragic backstory ever" who only speaks in awful one-liners and pretty much makes the movie.

So yeah you should watch it.

:S Are tickets really cheap here in the UK or something? :S

I'm certain that over the past few months I've seen both Dredd and The Amazing Spiderman (2 weeks or less after their release), both in 3D and spend under £20 in total on both...

...or has my "Going to the Movies for the first time in 4 years" thing just provided me with 2 wonderful coincidences?

On the topic of this movie, I was sceptical at first, but I'll be more than willing to see it if time allows looking at the overall reception I've seen for it here!
