But wait, by that logic, Princess Toadstool should be a steaming pile of frog droppings, even if the art doesn't give it away.

Not sure if you're joking. Regardless, her name has been retconned. She's now Peach.

On the other hand, Toad is a mushroom man, but the etymology there is clear, given "Toadstool" and Toad's appearance.

Your article inspired me to give Frog Fractions a try. What a delightfully bizarre game. I'm currently on the final screen clicking the "Nom" button over and over. I wish the boxing monologue was available here.

EDIT: The boxing monologue is available as part of the game's soundtrack, which can be downloaded for 5 bollars or more.

I was gonna say the smaller mushrooms, ya' know, before you realize their falling over is an attack, and not just them being adorable.

I was definitely just joking, but I also had no idea about that etymology you linked to. But wait! If the princess has been 'retconned' (I also have no idea where this word comes from) and her name is now Peach, clearly she should be round, vaguely orange and fuzzy, and/or trapped on a Georgia license plate!

I do want that. VERY BADLY. But I'll get there through hard work and business instead of hitting pirates with malformed Goombas.

I like warioland 2 quite a bit, being one of my first gameboy games (I think my third?). It's quite different in the fashion you can't die, but there area large variety of challenges, and many ways the story can go. Also the first game I can proudly say I ever 100%-ed, and then some twerp erased my file a few weeks or days later and I got royally ticked, as it's not quite as easy as one would think. The main goal is to do whatever it is listed in a stage, though secret exits are available, and yes, I found them all without the internet. I state this as a spoiler free warning as to some of the insane secret endings that you can find. Also, you'll need to hoard money to get parts of things that unlock the final level, and foes like to make you lose cash upon getting hit. The cost of immortality I guess. V

Warioland 3 is similar to warioland 2 in the way of immortality, though the goals are always to find keys and the chests they go to. Also, you don't lose money upon getting hit. Of course, money is used ONLY for a mini-game that has irritated me for my life over. It's a sub-par mini-golf mini-game that I find irritating to play. You can play through the story and get to the final boss who happens to be able to kill you (the only way to game over in the entire game, getting crushed by the final boss, dunno why), but there's still about half the treasure in the game to get still. The puzzle-platforming nature of the game is a drastic change from the previous two in terms of game...ness, but it's enjoyable...most of the time.
Even if you get all the treasures, there's still the matter of getting the 8 giant musical note coins hidden in each stage, and collecting all of them nets you...the....stupid...mini-golf....min-game.....accessible from the world map....weeeee......
But I've never got all the coins (without hax) as I never really felt like looking for them, but they are findable for sure. After all the treasure is all said and done, you get a time trial mode which is where you go and collect all the keys in a stage and get to any exit as quick as you can muster. Thankfully, you don't have to collect the coins to unlock this, and they're not required to place time either.

If I had to say to go after these games or not, it would be yes for warioland 2 if you can find it for no more than 10 bucks, 5 would be an appropriate price for it. Warioland 3 is a maybe, it has some fun parts, but other parts can be angering and boring, I'd say 5 bucks max to spend on it, maybe about 2-3 bucks is an appropriate price to pay.

If by "hard work and business" you mean reviewing games like:
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (NES)
The Simpson's arcade beat-em-up game (Arcade)
Castlevania II - Simon's Impossible Quest (NES)
Food Fight (Atari, I think?)

then I'm behind you 100%.

EDIT: Oops, just thought of another one:
Back to the Future (NES). Did you ever play this thing? This game was terrible. I guess it was kinda funny that you save George McFly by hitting Biff's cronies with milkshakes (it was something like that).

I actually like Food Fight in the arcade but I assume the Atari version is super terrible. Simon's Quest I could definitely write plenty about, Simpsons Arcade too. I haven't played Roger Rabbit or Back to the Future but I've heard many bad things!
