Well the thing about DDO is that it is free, however it's got a bunch of perks if you buy stuff. If one were to play the game for free and never pay for anything in the game it's still actually possible to do just about everything.
The digital money they use in their feature shop "Turbine points" can actually be earned in game. ( I'm not sure if any other game has ever done this ) Of course earning enough to afford the bigger items can be pretty darn taxing. Thus they also have the option of sharing purchased quests with your friends through things called "Quest Passes." Thus allowing a player that has never given the game a dime to play any and all dungeons, free or not.
I actually have a VIP account on DDO.
As far as Nestalgia, how does being in a group actually work? do you actually have 1 person leading the caterpillar and the other guys just choosing their action in battle?
But that's all guilding, if we're talking tourneys, I'd think the community would be more interested in strat games than fighting or FPS games. Am I wrong? Any thoughts?

I vote against DDO and TF2 on the grounds my computer hates both. TF2 not so much, but still laggy as all get out.
And you're welcome to do so, but I'd welcome some other suggestions that don't kill computers. (are you sure you haven't tried just turning the graphics way way down?) Maybe some older games? Can Command and Conquer be played online? Or maybe one of the early civilizations? Quake?
Older, non-graphics intensive games that are free to play? Hmm...
Syndicate (Not the new one)
Dune 2000
Blood - Does this actually have online multiplayer?
System Shock
This is newer, but not very graphics intensive and is also free:
UFO: Alien Invasion
EDIT: If Dune 2000 can be played online, I don't see why Command and Conquer can't be played online as well.
Being from the third world, I reserve the right to speak in the third person.

Yes, exactly. Non-leader party members can also cast spells/use items out of battle, but pretty much nothing else (you used to be able give items to other party members but they made that subscriber-only very recently). Party members also miss out on most NPC text, and have to leave the party to use a shop :(

Yes. Age of Empires. Only FPS I play is Half Life.
