Video Game Tourneys and Mmo Guilds

A thought crossed my mind as I tried to ponder of what the inactive CP users might be organizing in the shadows. They might be holding online video gaming events of which most of us are not aware of. Perhaps they even have Guilds in MMOrpgs that we don't know about titled things like " The OHR Bandits" Or "The Official Hamster Republic of Funk".
While these ideas passed through my head, I thought to myself, "Hey I wanna do that, how dare they leave me out." Then I (not too quickly) realized that they were mostly likely not doing anythign of the sort and I wasn't be left out of such things and to not hate them.

This all brings me to my proposal. We should hold some Video Game Tourneys, and make some MMO Guilds.

REPLY with ideas for games to do this stuff in.
(Also try to suggest free games to do this sort of thing in, because more people will participate that way I think [maybe not])

This would be cool in a mo, not very big currently, NEStalgia. We could make a guild if someone paid for membership, it's like $25 for a permanent membership. NEStalgia is a mmorpg in the style of the original Final Fantasy, or most OHR games. I feel a guild might be fitting if people wanted to get together and play enough to make it worthwhile.

There's the steam community group here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/soid

Not much goes on, but it's there... I guess. Steam has a lot of free to play games - would be easy to set something up there.

To my knowledge the only thing the community plays together is Minecraft, of which there's already a thread.

I'm not sure how I feel about NEStalgia. I tried it out a while ago and remember it being kind of boring. Also it makes me think of the games I could be making instead. I'm trying to procrastinate here, how can I do that when this game keeps reminding me of what I could be doing?

Steam does have free games, but what if any could we set up a tourney for? More information needed. Processing...

There's always the option of playing a MUD, but I understand that they're not really everyone's cup of tea, so-to-speak.

OK.

So I'm going to list a couple games free on Steam that we could potentially start a video game tourney with. Post your thoughts and/or willingness to take part in such a thing.

Team Fortress 2

Magic: The Gathering - TACTICS

PoxNora

Age of Empires

Super Monday Night Combat

Those are the ones that seemed interesting to me and tounrey worthy. Leave feedback.

I would definitely play PoxNora or Age of Empires. TF2 doesn't work with my internet, Punkbuster is a "virus" according to my firewall, so i wouldn't be able to play that.

Realm of the Mad God is fun, but personally I got bored after half an hour of mindless clicking and arrow key pressing...

What, no Lord of the Rings love? Or Dungeon Fighter Online? I would recommend both very, very highly.

And I'd be down for Pox Nora but Java Box can't load up on my comp.

Yea I'm just not that into the smaller mmos. Realm of the mad god is only fun for the first couple of hours. I couldn't imagine what you'd even do as a guild. However, I'm not complete against either Realm of the mad god or NEStalgia personally, and if a majority of the potential players on here choose one of those 2 I'd still be up for playing.

As far as a MMo guild goes, I was thinking we could set up a time and day of the week to meet up and play whatever game it is for a couple hours or so. And then not play ( at least those characters) at any other time. This way we'd all remain about the same level.
But yea I was thinking more of a Lord of the rings / Dungeon and Dragons Online, or WoW type thing. Any big mmo that is now free.

As far as tourneys go,let's narrow it down to either:

PoxNora
or
Age of Empires

I'd be in favor of D&DO actually. I doubt I could do anything that requires a paying subscription, not on a third-world schoolteacher salary at any rate, hehe. LotRO doesn't seem like a bad option either, though I'm more partial to D&D

Maybe it's best if I include every game mentioned here on the poll. Let the poll do the talking. By the end of the month we shall start our activity, whether it be guilding or tournamenting.

I'll try to update the poll with new ideas as soon as I see them posted, so if you have an idea for a game we should play please post it here.

Slightly true actually.

It's odd feeling for me to actually have played most of the games people are talking about!

Can someone explain why realm of the Mad God gets mentioned so much? I played it once (half a year ago?) and it seemed like an extremely simple game, totally out of place next to the other games you listed.

Lately I've been playing NEStalgia. It is indeed boring when you play by yourself because it is terribly grindy and there are very few NPCs to talk to. Really only fun when playing in a party. Also unfortunately it's Windows-only which is a problem (James couldn't get it working under Wine, for example).

Age of Empires 1? Why not 2? But either one would be fun. Haven't played those in years.

I've also played DDO some, which was neat, but wasn't expecting to ever go back to that. The problem with DDO is that most of the content (dungeons) are (or were) not free, but IIRC you can get by just by repeating free dungeons. All of the early content (as far as I played) is free.

Huh, I didn't know that. That might might decrease my interest in playing it actually.

I haven't ever actually played any MMOs, apart from a very short (10 minutes?) stint having a go at a friend's WoW character. I was, however, rather into MUDs at one point, spending quite a bit of time on Achaea.

Age of Empires sounds interesting, I might be up for that if I can sync up my schedule with all you people on the other side of the world.
