So I'm working on a new game and I'm sort of lost *-*. This game is based off of metal gear solid...well, everything except the story line. This is mostly because mgs has a confusing storyline, so if anyone could give me any ideas ( they don't have to relate to mgs story at all) or advice with my graphics, id be a very happy boy :3
Writing a story for a Metal Gear Solid kind of thing shouldn't be that hard. Just think of a reason that someone would need to sneak into someplace. In Metal Gear Solid's case, the place was a super secure Alaskan military base and the reason was a world-changing delivery system for weapons of mass destruction, METAL GEAR. They chose to play it serious, but you could play it goofy just as easily. Maybe somebody had to return some library books after the library closes and before they get a late fee.
If you wanted to be more serious, there's a million things a person might need to sneak for. James Bond alone has faced countless nuclear threats, electro-magnetic sattelites, a Thunderball, a plot to rob Fort Knox and swordfights with Madonna. I'm sure you could think of something similliar.
Actually, thinking of Metal Gear, Hideo Kojima threw in a lot of references to movies that he had enjoyed. Revolver Ocelot shows off his love of American cowboys, the second Metal Gear Solid throws in some references to Escape from New York, the entire relationship between Colonel Campbell and Solid Snake is a reference to Richard Crenna's character in the Rambo series. What kind of movies do you like? Who are some of your favorite characters? What aspects of Metal Gear and these other things do you want to work with? Thinking about this, or even discussing it here, will help you develop a story you want to tell.
As for your graphics, that's going to be harder to advise without seeing something. Just do your best and if it doesn't look right when you're finished, post it in this thread. Nobody can tell you how to draw everything from scratch, but you can show us where you're struggling and we can help point you onto the right track.

Additionally, if you want to use characters from the games, you could always re-imagine some or base them off the original concept for said characters.
For example: did you know that Snake's appearance was originally based off Christopher Walken?
Put Snake in a situation that he hasn't been in before. He hasn't been to a Desert or in Asia. According to MGS2 and its intro, between Shadow Moses and the Tanker Incident, Snake and Otakon had been taking down Metal Gear projects. During the game it is also mentioned that every dotcom had its own version of Metal Gear, so you had a nice space between MGS1 and MGS2 to play around with.
Incidentally, South Korea has a budding tech industry and the government have set a (fairly ambitious goal) of having a robot of some description in every home by 2015. Maybe you could set the scene being that a blueprint of a South Korean Metal Gear had been compromised by the North.

I would buy any Metal Gear game if it starred Christopher Walken as Snake...
...I've remembered two very distinct scenes that have made me rethink some things.
MGS1's opening...
Snake smuggled his cigarettes in is stomach...
Pulp Fiction...
The watch scene...
I can worryingly see how a gold watch and the cigarettes could serve the same-ish function, one makes the laser beams visible... the other deflects them, and in the context of the watch... both are detrimental to the player when equip with said item.
...as a side note I'd love to hear Dave Hayter do the whole watch scene.

Heh, indeed, the Solid Snake walkabout is adorable. And the second link doesn't work because there's a period at the end of the link, must have been enclosed in your [url] tag. I'm not sure if I like the screen though, I mean, it's pretty cool, but it doesn't seem to work well with the actual map and walkabout. The two styles seem to be in conflict with each other.

I was thinking something like this perhaps:
I've never actually played a Metal Gear Solid game (for shame, BMR!) so I don't really know what the codec should or should not have, but something like this might fit better. It makes use of your excellent walkabout sprite, while mimicking the other screen you had. Granted, it's not pretty good (needs more detail) as is, but just illustrating the idea.
