I'm only using the WIP for Merciful Mungbeans. Like I said, I don't remember how it happens, it just does. Or did. It's been a while since I've touched my ar-puh-guh.rpg file.

In my playthrough of Ar-Puh-Guh the hero hiring guy just left before I got a new hero, since I canceled out of it on accident. Whoops.

Supposed to be able to, but I guess I'll be trying to add a choice that pops up if you still have a ticket to see if you really meant to not hire a guy or not.

I may add more value to the ticket so it'll be more worth it to sell, so you could, instead of getting a second party member, have a bunch o' cash to gear yourself up instead.

James, I can confirm that the bug used to happen to me back in August using the latest stable release, but now that I'm working with the nightly, it no longer occurs.

Kinvesard (Spoonweaver)
Quick Notes Through Completion (<30min)
-Seemingly good balance of choices early necessitates a handful of battles to realize what good choices are
-Bad choices seem doomed
-Not a fan of the immediate dungeon idea, but maybe it'll be explained soon?
-Wow, having the Song ability makes battles almost trivial
-Neat dungeon layout; treasures randomized?

Quick Thoughts After
This one has mostly solid design, but suffers from two crucial problems that prevent a higher rating from me. The design is solid in the sense that the party customization is streamlined, and I never felt that anything about this game took too long. The graphics are fine, and the dungeon layout is great.

Problem 1: Lack of content. This means the game ends before I can even figure out if there was a reason that I was in the dungeon at all. It also means there is no world, or even concept, to sink my teeth into. Whereas Cool Guy Surlaw gives a good indication of the story, the world, the tone, and the game mechanics, I don't feel like I know what kind of game Kinvesard will be moving forward.

Problem 2: Two balance issues. There are certain parties that it seems almost impossible to survive with, but that's not a huge deal honestly (best to kill inferior parties right away, so a player doesn't get stuck with them in a longer game). More importantly, having just one character with the Song ability makes the party effectively invincible. Not sure how to fix this one; maybe make Song a straight 50/50 aim? That way it is helpful to ease the battles with large groups, but will almost never fully incapacitate the enemies.

RATING: 5 (this also makes me realize I need to edit some previous ratings)

Legacy (BMR)
Quick Thoughts through ~1:15
-"For all stories must start at the beginning" - I thought this was a joke at first. Based on the tone of the rest, I'd remove this line.
-Not sure if "goodbye" is the proper thing to say to end conversation with companion
-Bug: after picking the thief, you can go back to her cell, except the wall isn't open, so you are stuck 'behind' it, walking through walls; also, why can't I take both?
-Nice to have speed difference that really matters (thief vs Kay)
-The non-standard following is kind of buggy and ultimately kind of silly. What does this add?
-Having thief's dagger unable to hurt slimes at ALL was a terrible idea
-Bug: cancelling use of an item still takes away the item
-Bug: treasure room accessed by solving the switches in the sewer is broken (script failure)
-Is there an autosave thing going on?
-Best textual mistake in an OHR game yet: "I want to be patronizing, but..." (resistance meeting on boat)

Quick Notes Afterwards
This game is very hard to rate. The world and the story seems to reach for an epic feel that I appreciate in such games. Of course, there are lots of neat little scripting tricks that make the game feel unique on the OHR. Furthermore, the battles are reasonably balanced, and the heroes have abilities to complement each other well.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of details here that are lacking. For one thing, the writing is lacking; the dialogue is longer than it needs to be, often sounding forced, and the attempts at some kind of humor fall flat. In addition, the plot stretches itself to points of implausibility (the captain who wants to let the escapees fight it out, despite his own clear indication that some of these prisoners are dangerous). This all wouldn't bother me so much if it weren't in a game that obviously wants to address a serious story.

In addition to this, the battles themselves can go a bit long. The clear and simple differentiation between the heroes is very nice, but it seems a bit counter-intuitive that the main hero, whose escape might 'mean' a lot, has magic that is vastly inferior to a thief stabbing things.

Ah, thank you for the comments. And actually thanks you to EVERYONE that played and commented on Kinvesard.

As far as content, things really fell apart. I had planned to have a lot more time to work on this, but things came up and basically time got away from me. There's really no good excuse for the lack of content. The only thing I can say is that there is another version of the game that has a lot more content, but it's not accessible because I haven't written the scripts for the cave yet.

The song ability is basically just a case of not play testing enough. I think I might have only ever tried that ability out twice. One time it works another time it didn't, seemed pretty fair at that point, lol.

Anyways, glad you liked some of what was there. I'm still working on it and do plan to have a update in the near future.

It's very easy to understand, especially for a contest, when things turn out that way.

Cool Guy Bob Surlaw
7 - I loved this game. It had just the right style, and it made me laugh. The only thing that stops it from getting full marks is that it was a relatively short demo. I am excited to see future releases.

DungeonMen
10 - In spite of a few bugs, this game was my favorite. It really captured that old-school RPG feel perfectly. I also loved the way the difficulty ramped. My first visit to each location was often terrifying and perilous, and ending in retreat or death, but with just a modest amount of resupplying and just a tiny bit of grinding, I was able to explore confidently-- then I would find another place, and it would be challenging again. I didn't end up using a lot of strategy in my battles, and a lot of my skills went un-used, but the battle still felt fun, and I think this was is no small part thansk to the numerous and unique great sprites.

Kinvesard
6 - Like Cool Guy, this suffered from being too short of a demo, but I liked what I saw. The graphical style was great, and I loved the zelda-style cubist perspective in the dungeons. I have difficulty knowing exactly what this game will play like when it is finished, but I do want to play it.

Super Penguin Chef
7 - The dialog in this game really made me laugh. I only played a little way into this game. It was the last I played before I ran out of time, but I found enough to like to feel good about my rating. I will be playing more.

ARP-PUH-GUH!
5 - I tried hard to progress, but I just kept getting killed over and over again. I did like the style of the game, and I feel like a little difficulty balance will go a long way to improving the game and making it more fun.

Abel
5 - This was a cool intro tutorial. I really enjoyed it, but as far as I could tell, the game ended at the end of the introduction. I liked the atmosphere and the world-background seemed interesting. I also liked how equipment was used creatively.

I offer my enormous apologies to everybody else who entered. You all certainly deserve votes, but I slacked far behind on my playing, and I can't vote on what I did not play. I do still intend to play every game, and bug me about it if I don't! :)

Also, I hereby close the window on my HotOHR bug fixing bounties. I successfully delivered features for BMR, Master K, Spoonweaver, KF Harlock, mjohnson092088, and misac.

I failed to deliver feature requests in time to Fenrir-Lunaris ($5), jcenterprises ($5), BlastedEarth ($4), Willy Elektrix ($3), The Wobbler ($3), Meowskivich ($3), Mogri ($5)

I now owe a cash bounty to each of you, please let me know if you want to be payed by Paypal, Amazon, Kiva, Check-in-the-mail, or Some-other-Method

I will not forget about your requests, and they still rate highly on my to-do-list. If anybody has questions about their requests, please feel free to ask.

No More Villains (Fenrir)
Quick Notes through ~30min
-Um
-Not for me
-Does this count as an RPG?
-I'm actually afraid of spoiling myself for things from games I haven't played yet

Quick Thoughts After
The graphics are wonderfully colorful and bizarre. The music is occasionally funny. But the game itself is pretty awful. It belongs in a "Terrible" Games Contest in every sense of the word. The early battles were easy, then suddenly the Surlaw and whale battle destroyed me. I'm honestly not interesting in trying it a second time.

I got a crash in Super Penguin Chef again.

I think the issue is when a song goes to loop while I don't have window focus on the game. Probably an OHR thing.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened in any other games because I've been taking notes for review purposes as I played them all.

1) Are you using the bundled executable?

2) Don't forget that you can save anywhere. This should help reduce the time you lose from crashes.

3) You might try checking your g_debug for error messages.

Yes I am.

And yeah I've been saving a lot so it's not a big deal.

I did check the debug - nothing interesting.
