Oh look, it's a cooking game segment? I wonder what sort of foods the judges would like? V

I believe I am now mostly caught up on editing the requests page.

I am also waaaay behind schedule on working on actually implementing requests, and I must sadly admit that I have barely touched Wandering Hamster because I have been spending most of my free game-making time on a non-OHR project (which i guess I will talk about in the Hype-up-your-game thread, rather than being all secretive about it)

The goal is to have the game in some sort of playable form by October, and while that's not far off, we're looking good for that date.

Deadline comes knocking. How does the game look?

Sadly, I got a nasty throat disease over the weekend. I think it is the sorest my throat has ever been. The short of it is that I had planned to do a last-weekend push for the finish line that just didn't happen. The game is theoretically beatable at this point, but three of the four dungeons are unfinished (one of them is mostly done, but the other two don't have any content at all besides the opening screen and shop), I just barely finished the scripts, and nothing is tested. So the game is complete in a blindfolded-dartboard sort of way.

But this is actually not terrible, all things considered, because the main storyline is finished and completely playable (at least in theory). With that particular deadline behind me, I'm turning my eye towards the game's balance.

My goal is to make the game pretty hard. Now, before that turns you off, let me state a few Super Penguin Facts:
  • Getting a party wipe sends you back to town with no penalty, aside from having to wait until tomorrow for more dungeon-diving.
  • Getting a game over (as in Recettear, received because you don't have enough money when payment is due) gives you the option to retry. This sends you back to day 1, but you retain all your ingredients, recipes, equipment, restaurant level, and contest level.

So you can't actually lose the game in the long run: if you play it long enough, you will get enough money to beat the game. And if you are actually winning the contests, then you will get enough money very quickly. (There are more contest tiers than there are contests in the scope of a single run, so on a retry, you will make a very large amount of money through contests.)

But I'm balancing the difficulty around a single, no-retry run. So here I'm staring at a spreadsheet that tells me that with a perfect score in the restaurant every single day of the game will net you at least 13,000 and maybe as much as 16,000 -- that's about 1/3 of your total debt over the course of the game! A more modest score of 75% each night will land you about 9,000. Using these numbers, I can set up the contest reward tiers so that a no-retry run will probably require you to win all of its contests in addition to doing at least decently in the restaurant. I can also adjust the numbers to make sure that it's possible -- even if very difficult -- to win a no-combat, no-retry run.

If you don't care about challenge and just want to enjoy the game, then the retry feature is for you. You can't fill your recipe book in a single run anyway (though you can keep playing after you win and complete it that way).

Nice to hear about the retries. In Recettear I had to restart from a save several times due to doing so badly in dungeon runs (kept bringing too few healing items) to complete the demo.

Hooray! Good news: the game is functional. I just ran through a week and a half of gameplay with no major issues and not many minor ones.

At this point, it's time to double down on the RPG half of the game. To expedite things, I was playing without visiting dungeons, which gave me a surprisingly hard time of things. (All of the dungeon-exclusive ingredients are available in town one day a week with a 20% markup, which is the only reason this is even possible. I'm not sure you can win without at least shopping from the dungeon stores.)

I am pretty well satisfied with the first dungeon. The second dungeon is mostly done but needs to be populated a bit. The remaining dungeons are skeletons for now. Once I finish developing the dungeons, I'm going to add a few more events and sidequests, and then I can call this game done*.

*done enough for testing, that is

BMR has volunteered to produce fan art for the winning entr(ies). He'll have to specify whether it will be given to the winner of the original games, rereleased, or both. The official contest posting has been updated with a note about his contribution under my requests for "sixthly."

EDIT: BMR clarified that this will be for new entries only. Sorry, all you repeat offenders.

Post some of your scripting problems in a new thread on here somewhere. Be it a technical problem or troubles figuring out how to make something work, I'm sure someone will be along shortly to help you out.

@Meow: The old laptop is under my bed.

@Bacon: I know what I need to do its just...blagh. The scripts involve splitting the two main characters up and having them function individually, and the second is a minigame I made up a while ago and I need to adapt it to my game and my bones hurt thinking about it.
